2009 "Your Car VS" Thread

I made this thread to see what cars you guys are packin. Its dedicated to private races "the good, the bad, the ugly".

I want to see what you guys have beaten or been beat by with your cars. Pics, vids, and info about your car's setup and the opponents cars setup would help greatly. This thread hopefully will also help others in determining outcome of races.

I guess Ill go first.

I currently own a 2001 Buick Century Custom. It has a 3.1l v6 with around 170hp, its fwd, no upgrades but k&n intake. Ive never raced it before but it does have a good amount of power.

Im hoping to pick up an 87 toyota supra with an inline 6cyl.

lincpimp 02.16.2009 05:09 PM

I have a 74 yugo, it currently has an ex-nascar motor with 2002 season John Force hand ported 16-71 blower. I have a custom adapter to mate the engine with a 97 ez-go rear axle. Currently run 38" baja claws on the back with skinnies on the front. It is having some fuel issues right now, but when I ran it on aviation fuel with restrictor plates it managed a 7.93 @ 101mph on the home-made 1/4 mile track. I did not use the "nitros" but it was definitely pulling hard. The time looks a little funny as it layed over a bit on the top end, I just do not think the HEI distributor can handle 9700rpm.

As far as competition goes, I raced a rocket powered grocery cart, it was close, but the cart wrecked as it had that gimpy front caster that plauges many carts. I have a feeling that it was a walmart cart, I may not have such luck if I line up against a target cart...

I have a feeling the buick you have may take me, as my ride is rear wheel drive, and you cannot compare to a front wheel drive car for off the line traction.

I just have a 2005 Mazda 3 hatchback. Supposedly ~160HP and 150ft-lb of torque. I really wanted the Speed3 (263HP) but it wasn't out yet and my current car at the time ('01 Ford Contour) was on its last leg. But wouldn't you know it; 6 months later after I bought the 3, the Speed3 came out. In about a year or two, I'll be looking again and was considering getting the Speed3, but the new Subaru WRX STi looks just about the same, but has 4WD and more power.

Anyway, here's my car:

TexasSP 02.16.2009 06:23 PM

I always thought Mazda dropped the ball not making the speed3 AWD like the speed6. The speed6 was a nice car as well and I would take a look at it too. I almost bought one in 06 but my wife can't drive standard and doesn't really want to so I opted not too.

rabosi 02.16.2009 06:48 PM

Up till december I had the same yr/model (w/5spd) that BrianG has. Traded that for a 09 Mazda 6S that the wife now drives. I'm now driving her 05 mazda 3i 5spd. The 3's are not very powerful but they are very nimble and fun to drive. The 6S moves pretty good with the 272 hp V6.
The reviews I've seen say the Speed 3 has a bad torque steer problem so I think you're smart going with the awd STI Brian, or the Mitsu EVO.
I haven't street raced since I was a young lad stationed in Japan in the 80's.

I did look into the Speed6 because of the AWD. But I really didn't like the clutch. It worked really well for racing, but much too touchy for general driving IMO, not to mention ice/snow. I'm sure I could have gotten used to it, but I just didn't want to.

BTW: I find the 3 is plenty powerful for most daily driving. I've blown away any focus, corolla, civic, pretty much any car in its class that I've driven against.

you just have to get used to the clutch, its really not that bad

the big problem with the mazdaspeed 6 and 3 is direct injection, the car is so complex its hard to get hp out of the motor

You're right, the clutch was rather touchy. I made the right choice in the end I got an 07 Camry XLE V6 and have loved it. It outruns my 97 Regal GS that was supercharged and honestly surprises most people.

The 3 is a nice car no doubt, and the only wagon type I think looks good.

Here is some pics of my baby! Its a 2006 Grand Prix GXP. I dont have any mods done to it yet, but I would like to go intake and exhaust. It has a 5.3L V8 with 303hp, HUD, navagation, power everything. It is a blast to drive! I have only played with a few cars. One time a guy in a little turbo civic took me by suprise. I didnt realize that he had a turbo and I was just shifting it into second when he decided to play, so I gave it a little and before i knew it we were doing 67 in a 25 (race only lasted a block).

It's a 1992 dodge dakota wiht 75k miles on it. It has a 318 5.2l v8 pumping out an amazing 235hp. It gets 14mpg mixed driving. The thing I like about my truck is that it sounds BADASS. I'm going to get a glasspack in the near future... Then it should sound even better. (but not as good as a regularly priced muffler...)

Do rentals apply? I had a Dodge R/T once in Georgia that ran pretty well, I smoked a small Mercades couldn't tell what it was by the grill I ran it up to a little over 120.

Then one time I got an 05' Grandprix with the supercharged 3.8L V6 it was the newest one at the time with the gen. 5 M90 supercharger. I was driving around at night and had a Sunfire pull up beside me and start reving the engine. He had the fart can and all. I smoked him off the line and into second. He followed me into a parking lot and asked what I had done to it. I laughed and told him it was a rental car. Make sure to turn off the A/C when doing a burnout in a FWD car.

I have had a few fast cars one was an 89 Thunderbird Supercoupe with a 5speed that I did quite a few things to (OK a lot), and I have a 78 El Camino that was pretty much stock except for the intake carb, distributor, cam (210, 218 duration @ .050 .495" lift) and a 2200 stall convertor and 3.08 rear. The exhaust was still manifolds but I ran 2 1/4" into a flowmaster Y then a Torque Tech 3" single (one side of a dual system) exhaust and a Flomaster 3 chamber muffler. It ran 14.1's at 95. The SC's best run was 12.78 @ 107.

Jeff

I used to do a lot of street racing, but had a few bad things I saw happen. I had a friend that got his truck shot up because he won and saw a few bad accidents so the only time I ran my own cars was at Baytown. I don't really like street racing anymore (little older and wiser I guess), I had an idiot loose control of his car doing about 80 and just about killed a friend and I and burned down our house, and he didn't have a drivers license or insurance, Effin' illegals

I finished wiring the old 68 bronco from Monster Garage a few months ago They are cool I like old and simple. These were some pics when I first started.

It was pretty cool but I was suprised at how bad of a hack job it was. None of the gauges were connected, only a few things worked the Fuel injection was so rigged that I ended up having to go through all the wiring because one of those guys broke a wire inside the insulation. I ended up stripping everything that had copper in it, and rewiring the entire system.

13K isn't bad I think this guy payed 16K for this one.

I used to drive a Dodge RAM 1500 quad cab, but getting 8MPG was awful. I went on a search for a Subaru SVX and found one, but finding parts to make it run good is very hard and taking it to Subaru is a pain in the butt. Also, it cost close to $200 just to change the spark plugs on the SVX. After my daughter is big enough to go in the front seat, I might just get a Corvette.

BP-Revo 09.13.2009 07:28 PM

My daily driver is an 04 G35 Coupe 6 Speed. CAI, Lightweight Pulleys, Sway Bars, Rear Strut Bar, Engine Damper Mount, slotted rotor and upgraded pads up front. Car has factory Brembo brakes front and rear.

It's hard to find decent (and safe) races where I am. Everyone who ever wants a piece wants to do it in the middle of peak traffic hour...I did have a Acura RSX try and I rolled on from 2nd gear 2000RPM while he had first and I still walked him from the second my foot hit the ground. I've been kind of wanting to go against a few Mustang GT's. Should be a close race. My car use to be my brothers and he said that at lower speeds you'd have to nail perfect shifts to keep up but after 80mph the stangs lacked the top end...

Two of the family cars (parent's cars) I frequently drive are an 06 M5 and an 09 Ram 1500 Quad Cab.

The Ram has the 5.7L Hemi with nothing but a K&N drop in and tint. Has only 2 effective gears to it's 105mph limiter (If it had 3 gears, it would be very fast). I once raced a VW GTI from a stop and I pulled on him until I let off at around 60mph. Also tried racing a C6 vette once but that wasn't pretty. We rolled on from 30mph and I held him to about 55mph (that's when the truck shifts into 2nd) but after I shifted he was gone... Was fun though, I thought he'd destroy me right from the start but it turns out a Mopar V8 moves a 5300lb truck rather well.

As for the M5 - never had any real challenges. It's hard to safely race with that car. I did get challenged once buy a really really old civic...that was just so stupid. I rolled on in 4th from 40mph and won. My brother did get lucky when he took it out for a spin (I was in the car). An Evo raced us from a dig. The AWD of the Evo and my brother's unfamiliarity with the M5 (shifting too early, not knowing how much throttle he could apply when launching) allowed the evo to keep up to around 70mph (This is the top of 2nd in the M5). Once we shifted to third we started walking it hard so we let off.

eovnu87435ds 09.13.2009 08:17 PM

Funny story bout my car. My mom had a dodge durango, with the v8 magnum. it was killing her in gas mileage and the A/C sucked, so she traded it in, going for something with a bit better mileage. she did exactly that. got something with just a little bit better mileage. She went from a dodge durango to an 07 dodge charger R/T, with the v8 hemi. bigger engine and smaller car(although wider than the durango) turned out to average to about 4 mpg better than before. I don't have a car yet, and my dad has a company truck, so oh darn, my only drivable car is the charger... When she said she got a light blue charger, i was like, "come on. you get a sweet car, but in a pansy color?" but when I saw it in person it grew on me. We got it from carsense, because the previous owner had it repossessed. And it has the nascar driver Scot Riggs's signature on the sun visor!

J57ltr 09.13.2009 08:28 PM

I really like the chargers even the v6 models they are quite and have a pretty good sounding stereo for stock, they also ride nice. I usually go for a 300, Charger or Magnum when I rent. The R/T I averaged 14mpg. the others I usually get in the mid 20's

I gave up on racing years ago, not worth the tickets and getting hassled by cops, and I'm more into trucks which aren't all that fast since I'm not lucky enough to have a Lightening like Linc.

Here is my last truck, an '02 Ram 1500 shortbox regular cab 4x4, 4.7L V8 w/ cold air kit, Flowmaster cat back exhaust,3" body lift, 33" ProComp MT tires on Mickey Thompson Classic II rims
http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/i...1/IM001820.jpg
http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/i...1/IM001726.jpg

I did use the truck off road, the lift and tires weren't just for looks. It pulled a lot of other trucks out of mud holes and I managed to never get stuck myself
http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/i...1/IM001973.jpg

Two years ago I finally got smart and traded in the Ram that had horrible gas mileage and was nickel and diming me and bought an '04 F-150 ext cab shortbox FX4 4x4 w/ 5.4L v8
http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/i...HPIM0084-1.jpg
Only Mod is the 33x12.50 proComp MT tires and rims, since this pic I have removed the step bars and added a low profile toolbox. Much happier overall with the Ford but the Dodge was better in mud and snow. I have smoked some civics and such with the ford as well.

I also have a 2000 Ford Ranger 2wd 4cyl 5spd that I use as my everyday vehicle

What's_nitro? 09.13.2009 09:21 PM

I have a '95 Bonneville, like the one seen here:

http://media.motortopia.com/files/66...ictures008.jpg

It has the 3800 Series II V6 (naturally aspirated ) with MSD ignition coils and my own 4" Al cold-air intake with a K&N filter on the end. It came with Buick 6 spoke alloy wheels which was kinda funny. I'd guess 200 HP, may be a tad more on a cold day. It's fast enough for me so that figure can't be far off. :mdr:

My custom intake make a really cool whistle noise that rises in pitch with rpm and makes the car sound turbo-charged. :great:
