Losi ESC smoked in first 3 minutes
 

Anybody else having trouble with the Losi 1/8 ESC (LOSB9516)? I was only setup for ~800 watts (5s@40A). I only made a few passes in front of the house when it sputtered and smoked. Can anyone recommend a good reliable ESC that can handle ~6s?

Yep, or be a Guinea Pig and try the Tekin RX8 when that comes out.............soon, so I know if they are any good before I sink more $$ in a new ESC :yes: :lol:

I was more impressed by the specs on the Losi (160A cont/800A peak). What are the power ratings on the Monster? Are they still using "more than you can handle"?

so how its possible to reach 160amp on 5 cell lipo?????

I would use 5000maH 30C-40C rated Lipos or 6s2p A123...

I like to run my rustler around 800 watts because it is almost a pound lighter but I have a 2000 watt setup that is crazy fast. I find that it best when manufactures define the hardware limits accurately so I can compare and contrast. I feel better pushing 2000 watts when I know the manufacturer rates the hardware beyond 3000 watts...

According to Castle's "Special Projects" page, the MMM is rated for 120A continuous. Now, at first glance, the 160A Losi ESC might seem a better choice, but many ESCs are rated "optimistically". Many I've seen simply add up the current rating of the FETs, and at 25*C. Now, I don't know about you, but even properly cooled setups will NEVER run at 25*C unless in the dead of winter. And FET current rating goes down with temperature, sometimes quite a bit. I haven't spec'd out the MMM, but their HV110 (airplane ESC) is rated at ~200*F - much more realistic. I would imagine they rate all their products in the same realistic way. So, if the Losi ESC is rated 160A @ 25*C, it would be closer to 90-100A at normal running temperatures.

That aside, virtually no setup I have ever seen uses 160A continuous. If it did, even a 10Ah battery would only last 3.75 minutes. Most MT/truggies geared for track use (~35mph) tend to run in the 15-20A average current rating, with peaks up to 7X that (~150A). So as long as the ESC you are looking at can handle the continous and burst value, you're fine.

Agreed on all counts...the question to answer is...are you comfortable running an ESC rated at 120A continuous at bursts approaching ~150A? Losi advertises 800A peak capacity.

Yes, that is fine. The MMM has a ~700a burst rating IIRC.

So why keep it a secret??? I don't see a peak rating on the web.

All the max or burst they state are MOSFET burst rating. If a company says a ESC can do 120 or 160A cont. use that as your burst. Most systems has an avg. of 5 to 20A anyways depending on voltage used. If anyone can find a ESC, battery, motor, wires and connectors used in our R/Cs that can seriously do/handle 100A cont. small enough to fit our R/Cs , please let me know.

Agreed...which is why I chose the Losi over the Monster; however, most of the folks here seem to prefer the Mamba.

At the end of the day, I expect to run either controller well below its rated capacity...what I expect (...demand) is reliability...I don't my spending a little more to get something that always works...

We had a thrash session that went well over the weekend. We're beating these up and literally trying to break them so be patient, it will be worth it.
