MMM XT8 Downunder

Hi guys (and gals)
Just wanted to show (off) my first brushless conversion. I dont know if anyone else has done this, but I have added my own touch by turning the centre diff 180 and front mounting the motor (Medusa 36-70-2000). Wasn't too keen on having upto 6s lipo leaning on one side, aswell as having a high centre of gravity. I already have a collection of 2s and 3s lipo's from my rustlers, that will save me some cash. Anyway I still havent run it yet, but it is set up with 4s at the moment for about 40mph.
So what do you think about the front mounted motor? The front to rear balance is very close to the centre.

Thanks

Looks great! That's what I was thinking would be the best racing setup, and most like the top 1/10 4WD buggies with saddle packs. If there were only some good li-pos in the same relative dimensions as 1/10 saddle packs, this would be a great way to go.

Nice looking rig. It's interesting that you chose this type of layout. This past weekend, I ran both my XX-4 (saddle pack layout) and my Lazer ZX-5 (single pack to one side). The XX-4 seemed to be more balanced, have better turn-in and almost swivel around a turn where the ZX-5 had more push under throttle and in the corners.

I thought to take this into consideration for my 1/8 rides as well. It looks to yeild promising results.

Very nice conversion.

Thanks for the comments guys. I forgot to mention that I'm more of a basher 'cos of the availability of tracks near by, but I can say that this thing handles absolutely awesome. Just took it for a bash on 4s on some grass and the Medusa didnt get over 145, but the MMM fan came on a few times. 20 min run time on 2 x 2s 25c 4900mah. Next up 6s

That's a very nice conversion OZ, up there with the best for sure

Where in Sydney are you running?

What's_nitro? 03.06.2009 01:32 AM

I love your layout! It looks very "RTR". Nice and clean...

OZ-RUSTLER 03.06.2009 02:43 AM

Thanks What's_nitro, thats what I was aiming for. I just need to tidy up the battery wiring after I work out what works best.
PBO I think we are close, you mentioned in the TRX forum your in the Inner West, same here.

That is my prefered setup for BL conversions too. Very balanced in every way. With bulkier A123 batterys one of the simplest solution to get enough room and a good balance. Of course somewhat heavier than with one lipo pack as you need 2 battery holder and 2 batterys with the same capacity as one will always be heavier.

Greets from the other side of the globe. Have been in Australia 2 times with sydney as starting point for my trips. Love this city. Great place to be.

I think for the sacrifice of a little extra weight, there still is an advantage over unbalanced weight.
Next time your in Sydney, let me know, we can bash (with trucks)

Would someone be able to tell me if a pair of Trakpower 3s 16c 5400mah be ok with the MMM? They are rated at 86amp continuous and 135amp burst.
Thanks

Dagger Thrasher 03.07.2009 12:16 PM

They might struggle a bit; I'd go for at least 100A of constant discharge ability. That's a sweet conversion though! Very clean, and great layout. Good job.

Marvin 03.07.2009 05:23 PM

They aren't perfect, but 6S won't draw as much current anyway (if you are gearing for the same speed). Only thing is, hardcased 3S lipos that are high capacity aren't that common. I think LRP do one, but I don't like their cells. Could just be me though...

OZ-RUSTLER 03.07.2009 08:32 PM

Just gave the Trakpower 3s 16c 5400mah batts a go. Even though I was geared for 59mph, battery temps didnt get over 110 after 15min of grass running.

Marvin 03.08.2009 09:03 AM

Trakpower are good, and I think their cells are slightly underrated sometimes (so you may get closer to 20C anyway). I think you've tested them to be up to the task!

Your truck looks great by the way. I used to have an XT8, but now I've got the Tamiya TRF.

Thanks Marvin. I have 6 different Trakpower lipo's and they are fantastic. Never had any cells go far out of balance:yipi:

There's a track at Liverpool.

I drove 45mins today to run my CRT against nitro's.

I was struggling as it was the first time I'd been on a track in 3 yrs & my truggy wasn't set up correctly for the track.

Also, was using the Medusa 36-80-2000 on Zippy 5S 5000 & was struggling to get more than 12mins from the pack.

My 1515 2.5D was getting me at least 25mins before I decided to test the Medusa.

Liverpool is nearly an hour from me. Mozzy, your in Melbourne right? I bought the Neu off you couple of months back. What was your gearing on the 12 min run?

Mozzy 03.08.2009 09:52 AM

Hey mate,

I'm running the 70mm can in my buggy, but, haven't hit the track with it.

The 80mm was run today on 5S & the temps were no higher than 75C after a 20min final.

Speed was stupid fast & running a 14T pinion on a 63T spur. The pinion is one tooth more than stock.

How's the Neu going? Still ridiculously fast?

Electricmammoth 03.08.2009 10:55 AM

Very nice truggy.
