A preview of my custom Savage conversion
I've never shared much of my build ideas here, so here it goes:
Been scheming this for a couple years now, I just must have a lot less disposable income than y'all because I haven't been able to pull it off 'til now. This is a preview, I'm waiting for the machinist to finish some of the parts and he's been taking forever. A special thanks to Tim Doolittle for forwarding a cad file I could modify for the TVPs. An overall shot of how it will look: http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...ge/Savage1.jpg Side view of the TVPs: http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/savage12.jpg The center trans here will be running a Revo slipper driving a standard 1/8th center diff. It also serves as the front support for the motor plate so it can be adjusted from bird's eye view: http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...ge/savage4.jpg |
The center trans pulls out with 4 screws and unclips to pull apart:
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/savage10.jpg Motor is a Hacker inside Novak heatsinks for their conversion kits. MMM moves with the motor on its plate: http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...ge/savage5.jpg Both front and back of the motor are clamped in place: http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...ge/savage7.jpg |
looking good!!, what model of hacker is it and what voltage are you planning on running??
|
It's a B50 8XL (2000kv) and I'm running 5s 2p 5300 Elite packs. Aiming for the longest bashing time possible!
|
any idea how much its going to weigh, wonder if you dropped much going to the carbon fiber
|
Don't know on the final weight yet. The batteries are quite heavy, so it will probably be close to a stock nitro version. The CF is really just for show on this one. The weight difference won't be worth a damn. I'm going to get a pair cut out of aluminum also.
|
I like the MMM and motor in one unit like that. Will the battery trays be adjustable front to back to adjust weight distribution?
|
The battery trays are fixed in the center of the truck. They are sized for big packs (190mm long), so a standard sized pack could be shifted fore and aft.
|
Got a couple things on it today. Jammin SBB shocks, and the wheels. Machinist said he'd be done counterboring the bearing holes and tapping mounting holes in the parts by the end of this week, so I may even be able to drive it by this weekend!

Looks very tasty! Nice work, I wish I was closer so that I could eyeball it in person!!!
Starting to look like the custom savvys are starting a trend! |
Very very very nice!!!
|
How much are those chassis plates stretched?? Look great!
|
Thanks guys.
Joey, They are stretched 1.5" over stock .25/x plates. |
...that looks great!! Have to agree with the flat tvp's...nice job...inside servo too...nice job...we are almost brothers :D
...Like Linc said..would love to see it in person... Quote:

Sweet lookin savage. This project should be sick.

Got a bit more done. I forgot to show the bottom of the motor plate. It has holes for all xl size motors, Medusa 80mm, and Tekno Neu square can. Easy enough to make adapters for any other motor. My Hacker isn't feeling too good, so I may need to scrounge enough money to test these other mounting points soon.
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/IMG_0594.jpg Here's an undershot with the skid plate: http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/IMG_0595.jpg Here are a few showing the transmission separately and then installed. The whole thing will pull out after removing four screws (after removing the motor which consists of two screws) and from there the end pieces pull off so the whole thing will pull apart. Now it's easier to see how the motor plate will adjust from a bird's eye view. http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/IMG_0587.jpg http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/IMG_0586.jpg http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/IMG_0589.jpg http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/IMG_0590.jpg All I need now is a rear dog bone, the roll bar pieces to get cut at my water-jet shop, and a body. |
...even though all these builds are different there are still similar arts though...great stuff...love it...
...pb4ugo what will your gearing be? Thats a 40t spur? |
Yes, you see a 40t spur. It's supposed to be using a 38t, but the hobby shop was out when I ran over there today. The center is running a 44t on the diff and 20t on the pinion for 2.2:1. With the 38t spur, a 2200kv motor I designed it for, and a 15t pinion on the motor it will go 35mph on truggy sized tires. From there I designed it to fit from an 11t to a 20t motor pinion to adjust the speed, reaching up to 46 with the motor and tires specced here. If I get a speed urge, I can change the center gearing.
|
Did you look at my Revo project while you were designing that older-style slipperential setup? Looks a lot like it, the gearing is even the same (44/20).
Looks great! Let us know how much it weighs when it's complete. |
Looks great man!

Okay, made some changes and a short video. The CF plates had the rear most mounting holes 4.5mm off:diablo: I had the nudge feature set there at one time, so I either hit it once too many times, or my two-year old daughter did while she was helping me:neutral: I tried to hand-drill new holes, but lets just say I should leave that to the CNC machines:lol:
Anyways, when I went to get a second set of plates cut with the corrected dimension, I realized I didn't have enough material left. Couldn't afford another sheet of CF, so I used some 4.73mm thick aluminum. The thing is stronger than hell, but the weight difference is huge! The thing is a tank now! I still have to find a shipping scale or the like I can use, but according to my oh-so accurate bathroom scale, it's 14.4lbs. as seen in the video. Remember, that's with 10600MaH of 5s batteries. The Hacker is doing surprisingly well. It pushes it well. It is at it's limits, though. After ten minutes of running in 105 degree weather, it reaches 160 and I shut it down. I really want to try the Tekin system in it, but it will have to wait. Anyways, here's a short, non-edited video to show it. It's geared for about 45MPH here. |
Looks like I screwed up the embed, so here's the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpWHz_Afnho |
Another hodge-podge of clips pieced together that I'm calling a video:
|
What the hell am I doing wrong in embedding these vids?
Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. Anyways, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTkGXcrRxo0 |
Awesome build,Looks good and works well. But needs more suspension IE stiffer shock action. The D8 shocks are to soft.
|
Thanks, and you're right--currently it's too soft. You have to remember this is the maiden run on dirt. I need to thicken the center diff and put the stiffer springs and thicker fluid in the shocks. If it still isn't enough, I'll go to dual 13mm shocks since I can get them cheap.
|
FYI, The D8 springs come in a mutitude of rates and lenths.
Check the Hot Bodies Site http://www.hotbodiesonline.com/parts...pe=OPT&lang=en |
i like it...needs to run suspension like mine and it will be super low :D
|
...any updates on this? mine is slow too but really wanting to see this one :) Eye candy pleasy cheesy wheezy :)
|
Ya, I've been running it off and on. Actually have it apart in "project mode" right now.
I broke the Twisted Toys towers and wasn't able to find replacements, so I went back to stock with Flux shocks. I didn't like the FLM bulks either, so went back to stock on those too. I polished up the plates and have it all glossy looking. Contemplating cutting another set 1/2" longer to match the wheelbase of the XL. Also going to switch to a 1521 I have. As soon as I have a little more free time I'm planning on raiding the local skate park and videotaping it:yipi: And yours......? |
...lol...good question :)
Essentially mine is done...Losi 8ight front shocks on all corners...nice and low...about 4.6 kg RTR...must update the eye candy :) Still loving your straight chassis though...if you DO update and the 'old' one needs a home drop me a note with a quote ;) |

The lack of easy access..... Fit and finish seemed slightly subpar.... |
Made a few changes:
Went back to the CF TVPs and hand-made (in other words, not super pretty) a new center brace/motor plate combo to use the Flux mount with my 1521. The Flux mount's thickness reduces my gearing choices slightly. I wanted to use the Tekno mount (even had the holes for it in the old plate) but never got a replacement for the ill-sized one I received. http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSC00589.jpg http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSC00588.jpg Also changed to an RC8 center diff: http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSC00591.jpg Finally got a body painted and mounted. It's a Crowd Pleazer for a LST. It's funny, after 24 years in RC, I still can't paint for the life of me:lol: http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSC00594.jpg http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSC00593.jpg and the mandatory "my daughter's excited about daddy's toy" shot: http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSC00592.jpg The 1521 is definitely better suited for this than the Hacker XL. It's a heavy truck with all that battery. Can't fault the Hacker, though. It did very well and hopefully will be put to use in a custom truggy I'm planning on. |
what tires are those? do they balloon much?
|
Those are Panther slicks and no, they don't balloon much at all compared to most other tires. Last I looked I wasn't able to find a set so I consider myself lucky to have these.
|
Found a good use for our trash cans today and had my daughter film the resulting jump. She's not too experienced with the camera, so sorry for the poor shooting:oops: I'm still hoping to make a real video as soon as my wife and I both have a little time to make it to the skate park.

Thats something I wouldn't do is jump on the concret, a little unforgiving. Set the ramp up so that the truck will land in the yard at least ?
Video was short and sweet, nice air ! |
Metallica is the shiz. :mdr:
