Racing w/a v3

1 Attachment(s)
Not a pro  just your average weekend warrior. Been able to race once a week for a couple months now since were back in so cal and thought i would share my experience with the v3 so far.

rc8
neu 3200xp 25/50c 6s
neu 1512 3d
5-5-5 (needed thicker on the blue-groove in the center)
15-18/46 depends on dia of tires and track size(indoor/outdoor in my case) mostly 40mph outdoors ~35indoors

MMM settings
19.0v cutoff
50% brakes
30% punch control
0 timing
start power medium
very small deadband

First thing, TOURQE (i think i spelled that right?) tons of it everywhere. so much so that i broke (spread apart under load and snapped) a rear diff out drive saturday on the second lap of my heat(outdoor-blue groove). Pretty much the only reason i opted to use the punch controlin the first place, helps keep my car out of the stratosphere:lol: and keeps the setup about 10-20 degrees cooler
5min race indoors 110 motor/ 75 MMM/ ~75 batt(~800-1000 mah)
5min race outdoors 125 motor/ 90MMM/ ~90 batt(~1000-1200 mah)
10-15min race outdoors 140 motor/ 100 MMM/ 100 batt(~2400-2600mah)

these are small tracks, OC/RC and Hotrod my accuracy on the above #'s is to the best of my recolection. I temp the componets as i pull the car off the track so its not like i write them down... :whip:

The only real gripe i have on the v3 is the loss of the batt side bullets. i like my wires short as i can get em, and have extra 6.5 bullet pigtals, and lets not forget its a no no to solder on the pcb:neutral: so cutting the wires is just a trap.

FYI
Mount your MMM on the chassis!!!! this isnt really an issue now that we have all these sick conversions out. The car itself was done last Feb. and initially had the MMM mounted on a CF "divingboard" off the top of the center diff twards the rear. It didnt like it there for whatever reason. not really sure why didnt abuse/crash my rig, but since on the chassis its been smooth sailing, and better ballance too:whistle: Would like to remove the case and drill some holes in the front where the caps are just to let some air in due to where its mounted, but the fan never comes on and the caps are always +/- 2deg from the rest of the esc. Couldnt hurt though right? only the warranty:rules:

Other than that the thing rips! Much quicker than any of the nitro cars. Its definately not as "smooth" as a sensored motor, IF you drive it that way. It has way too much power but driving it smoothly its as fast as the gas cars in lap times when i dont bobble/get hacked or have the marshall try to carry it off the track because its not making noise:na: Have never had it hit cutoff, dont bash, all racing. Ran it twice on the street w/sportwerks tires to align the front end but thats about it unless i trim the steering at the track in the pits around 5 mph.

Will be the millonth to say castles customer service is just that CUSTOMER SERVICE, i know hard to believe huh? like some others i have had failures v2 bec's and v3 as well. why? couldnt tell ya, i have a v3 in my rig and one factory sealed in my pitbag. if anyone cares pm me and i will let you guess which numbers they are:sleep: shure it sucks and in the beging everyone one was pissed because we waited for what seemed like an eternity to just HAVE one myself included. BUT the cc crew is top notch and as long as i run my rc8 it'll hav a MMM or version of it pushin the amps.

Would REALLY LIKE TO RUN 8s if the "rc-gods" are listening. Probably on a 1100-1300 kv motor with mikes 2500 cells. I think it would be great, run long cool and fast... or something like that, also because HV is fuuuunnnnnn....

e-mike 03.23.2009 07:57 PM

nice review:yes:....im a semi racer and i can confirm that the v3 is a solid esc:whip:(even if i have one unit melt...)

slimthelineman 03.23.2009 08:14 PM

i am very happy with the v3, hell i liked the v2's too, everything is 10000000% better when it works and i think the v3 is a solid performer for my application.

magman 03.23.2009 08:25 PM

Very nice review...I had a v1 die on me a while back and sold it's replacement. I am considering getting another one but, my inner voice is telling me to go for the sensored system by Tekin:whistle:

slimthelineman 03.23.2009 08:39 PM

yeah alot of people seem to be hooked on the sensor deal but i kinda like the crazy "snap" of the sensorless neu! suits my driving style. I suppose the difference is subtle but it is there.

its seem that the v3 is a very smooth esc i cant imagine how smooth is a sensored unit.....for racing i dont really think that this device is needed....in crawling maybe....

bdebde 03.23.2009 09:08 PM

So no problem getting 15 min race time with the 3200 6s?

I have been thinking about going 6s in my race buggy. I am still running 4s on a MM.

slimthelineman 03.23.2009 09:16 PM

geared for 40mph yeah the 3200xp's work good, about 500g too. neu is out of stock on them so i dont know if they will get any soon but the 3300ep's are in and they were only like 30g heavier if i rember right. 6s is great, tons of power if you can lay it down. thats the hard part. but then again its always better to have and not need than need and not have right?

Unsullied_Spy 03.25.2009 04:21 AM

Do you have any issues with the ESC "hesitating" under hard acceleration? I noticed mine would cog a bit hitting full throttle from a dead stop or slight roll. Maybe mine was defective though, it stopped working after some hard braking so maybe mine was a lemon from the factory.

slimthelineman 03.25.2009 05:33 PM

no not once its moving, once and a while it will hesitate coming out of neutral but nothing horrible. dont really use neutral much while racing with it.

not the greatest video but about 2.5 mins of playtime at a electric series race over the weekend. ran the MMM during the heat of the day today on dry-track too!:yipi: was quite impressed with the speedo handling the heat, traction, and my horrible driving that day...... only four cars including myself and another track local included. kinda shocking since the track hosting the series race usually has two heats of electric 1/8 scale, andonly two of them showed up? needless to say i was the only castle user there.... nobody wants to run their novak on 3-4s on a larger track?

anyway i drove the setup pretty hard on the semi blue groove surface and suprisingly temps were only about 10-20 degrees higher than normal. didnt chang any settings on the MMM and got:

MMM ~135 on the heatsink through the case but fan was running
motor ~160
battery ~110

used around 2200 mah per five minute:sleep: race, alittle higher than normal but expected. still running the 3200xp's would like to get some of the 3300ep's (and an eagle tree) soon but work has been slow for the last couple of weeks. ok time for a dumb question, anyone seen the trinity lipo warmer? (140deg. F constant) what the hell is that about? dont think i would run a fully charged 140 deg lipo in my buggy. yet...
also how do we all feel about saddle packs? used them before in 4w 1/10 but seems to be popping up more.

brushlessboy16 04.01.2009 08:55 PM

That thing accelerates like a bat outta hell :), very nice...

I run 2x 2s saddle setup, but the packs are normal sized. its a really nice setup

Great video! That buggy has insane power when you get on it. Nice job!

slimthelineman 04.04.2009 11:40 PM

thanks guys, looking to get some stronger packs soon so i can get rid of the punch control (30%) and see what it can really do, though i have a feeling a slipperential will be needed to keep the drivetrain in one piece. and lots of practice!

BlackedOutREVO 04.05.2009 07:12 PM

What track is that? Looks like a fun track to run wheeler on.

You are rolling on a stupid amount of power! LOL why dont you quad those first set of jumps?

Jeremy1976 04.06.2009 12:28 AM

Nice driving!

Hotrod Hobbies in saugus CA, the first set of jumps sets you too deep in the corner when you quad it and it send tou to the marbles on the outside of the turn

 thanks, was having more fun with it than anything, trying to get it to fail in the heat/high traction really. drove it hard and it begged for more.

magman 04.06.2009 07:18 PM

Nice vid and driving...very technical...your buggy does accelerate v/nicely

another clip, club race wet track sportsman class and a bunch of loud smelly cars. car ran better than ever before(steering mod really works!!) temps were only higher on the motor, about 180. thinking it was all the mud? was also geared under a little and ran a ten minute main. that seems to be the most logical explanation to me. using a new batt tray (novak) with the bottom cut out of it. mmm still going strong, was acting funny at first but recalibrated it to the radio and all was good again.

hootie7159 04.14.2009 12:57 AM

slim...what were the BIG differences that you saw in steering in your rc8....i'm just now getting used to how my rc8t handles and it turns like its on rails.....is it really worth doing??? i'm contemplating doing this but am curious as to what the pros and cons are..thx!

thanks guys for the kind words, yes it is a bit one sided against the nitros. the steering mod didnt give it more steering but got rid of the bump steer and made the steering waaaayyyyyy more consistant all around. use the outside rear hub camber rod insert on both sides of the steering link and mount the inside on the bottom of the bellcrank.

brushlessboy16 04.14.2009 08:34 PM

Wow, is that considered rape?

Good driving!. Pretty sure you were outpacing the train in the background too

yeah, its not all as it seems. anyone can win in the sportsman class, but race director is hesitant to run "oddball" setups with the factory guys. try to run a fair race all around no hacking until hacked upon:lol: have for years at this track. having so much fun with the car at this point i dont even care. the mmm is holding strong and the rc8 is aournd 25g off f/c and l/r and is getting better every time i drive it harder, and harder. the neu is amazing EXCEPT the wires but oh well. it was a little hot 190:surprised: at the end of the last 10 min race but the track was crazy muddy.

fsracer 04.15.2009 12:21 AM

This is so great, racing with brushless is awesome MMM V3 has been so fantastic, has me thinking of converting all my other trucks. Here is a pic with 3 Brushless 1/8's easily making a 30 foot gap something I thought I wouldn't ever try.

Hydrodancer 04.16.2009 01:39 AM

Nice driving. Your car looks alot smoother and consistent now that your going double-double instead of triple-single.
I'd like to make a small suggestion if you don't mind, try going a little easier over the second double. I think if you take it like you did when you were trying to avoid the buggy that was on its lid you might see some slightly better lap times. It looks like you were going a little too far into the turn and making the track longer then it actually is.(does that make sense?) Let me know if it helps.

slimthelineman 04.16.2009 06:48 PM

yeah i know what you mean, its tough because the second double "pops" you even if you just roll it but yeah it was on my mind after watching the videos too.

slimthelineman 04.18.2009 02:22 PM

went to ocrc last night and lost in the b main to Barry Baker, whatever. didnt have good tires for the track and its like racing in a closet. everyone there seems to think 2-3s is WAY to fast for the indoor track. two hotbodies d8e's were there barry had one. it looks like a tenth scale. but why not thats the gear everyone uses in them anyway. the mmm worked flawlessly again and never got above room temp. gearing was 14/46 and could not get the car to wind out down the 60' straight.

fsracer 04.18.2009 03:07 PM

That D8 has one freeking looking body from the pics that I have seen. I'll be putting my second race on the V3 tomorrow expecting the same great results as the last race, already working on the conversion of my buggy RC Monstor has been such a big help with my conversions.

slimthelineman 04.18.2009 03:28 PM

it does look good BUT i say let 1/8 scale BE 1/8 scale dont redesign the car to run on tiny tracks w/ electric power. just an opinion though. we will see if the plastic chassis will hold up to the thrashing. also i dont really see how it will be balanced with anything more than a 3s hardcase

shaunjohnson 04.19.2009 04:49 PM

MMM
just scored 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the electric class yesterday:yipi:
MBX5B conversion
RC8T conversion
revo 2.5 3905 conversion
revo platnium 3905 conversion

and the speed passion that our LHS raves on about went poof:lol:
and they only do 4s...ewwww....gimmi a MMM anyday:wink:

got a new shell from my buddy zero260rc :yipi: the old one was held on by wrapping vynil tape around the car:oops: also have some TP 3s 3200 40c hardcase packs coming soon:party:

slimthelineman 04.27.2009 01:58 PM

havent had time to race lately been working weekends, but i got a chance to practice for a few hours at ocrc on thurs. night. ran the car on 4s with my 1512 3d geared for ~30mph (17/44). was plenty of power for the tight track and temps were good after 15 mins of running 110 batt 100 mmm and 140 motor. 16/44 is probably where i will end up as it is right where i need to be on 4 and 6 cells. motor is working quite well with both voltages and the MMM is holding strong. using the auto lipo cutoff, works well as long as you ALWAYS use a fully charged pack and count the beeps to be safe. no problems here with all that and it makes running at two diff size tracks much easier for the lazy lineman

brushlessboy16 04.27.2009 05:54 PM

I finally made it out to the track with my MMM 2200 kv on 4s in my truggy. it outpaced all but one nitro truggy (damn factory team drivers) temps were 130 on battery, 155 on the motor, and unknown on the esc.. ambient temp was 95 degrees. Im very impressed with the MMM system

slimthelineman 04.27.2009 07:51 PM

good to hear! dont worry about the factory drivers, they are factory cause they are FAST! no matter what. i got beat by a factory driver on 2 cells in a D8E and a novak 4.5 insane!

shaunjohnson 05.03.2009 04:50 AM

castle done it again...1st 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th all were runnin MMM + 2200kv combo's today:yipi:

the speed passion "arrow" 1/8th ESC shat itself in fear (let smoke out)

i was running 4-5s on a converted revo 2.5 (3905 style) on 16/68 gearing.
temps never got over 120...which is surprizing, but it was a 60-68 day.
i got 4th overall. pretty happy considering it was the first day out on a REAL track (the club goit a brand new track so EVERYONE sucked all day..and the buggies..well they just got owned!!)

much fun...thank you castle!!
shaun

Check it out. http://www.casterracingusa.com/forum...ead.php?t=1358
I am still running a V1 every weekend. My system runs strong and cool. My Neu 1512/2.5df is 3 years old running every weekend.
