MMM ESC and Novak 6.5HV Motor

Quick question. Do you all think it is possible to us a MMM with a 6.5HV motor.

Buddy has one and is giving me a good deal on it. And no I dont have the MMM combo just the ESC.

Arct1k 04.02.2009 10:40 AM

It has a small rotor so watch temps but the mmm should drive it ok...

ambryatim 04.02.2009 11:02 AM

It is actually the new version, so does it still have a small rotor???

BP-Revo 04.02.2009 11:20 AM

The MMM should run it fine. However, just be aware that the HV motors are internally 380XL motors and therefore run at very high RPMs, so gear accordingly. You'll be using pinions 2/3 the size that you would with most other motors.

BrianG 04.02.2009 11:21 AM

Also, make sure the ESC has firmware v1.20 or higher.

It has v1.20 V3 MMM. And I think on the gearing I will have to go with 15/68 on an EMAXX. If I remember the 6.5HV is rated at 3400kv.

Sounds about right, the MMM will run the hv motor just fine. I would try your gearing and see how the temps are. As long as you do not try to run heavy/large wheels and tires you should be fine. If your emaxx has alot of al parts, or you run heavy batteries you may have issues, just keep an eye on temps...

Uh.....I have Moabs but I might need to get some Dirt Hawgs or Axial Terr-izers.

Dang, well I might have to go with something different.

brushlessboy16 04.02.2009 02:48 PM

Best bet is to go with a different motor, will save u in the long run and be more reliable.

Medusa 70mm motor. Under 150 shipped, not much else that thrify that is worth wasting your money on.

BrianG 04.02.2009 02:57 PM

A Medusa 36-70 or 36-80 would be about the cheapest, reliable, and efficient large motor I can think of...

Edit: Dang, linc beat me to it. At least you have two answers posted seperately that say the same thing!

ambryatim 04.02.2009 03:02 PM

Score one for Medusa, but I have heard some were having issues with dirt getting into the open end of the motor and causing premature bearing failure. And some tape up the holes but, I would think that, that would cause cooling issues.

BrianG 04.02.2009 03:19 PM

Covering the holes does limit cooling, but you gotta remember these motors were designed for aircraft where you have a huge fan (propeller) blowing air into/across the motor. In cars, you just have whatever flow makes its way under the body, so the vents play less of a role.

I use aluminum tape on the wire end and cut a thin aluminum disc to sandwich between the motor and mount in front. I use aluminum because it help transfer the heat to the mount. In the three Medusa setups I have (one of which is a 36-80 on 5s in a XT8 truggy), everything is fine temp-wise. Eventually, I plan on getting the heatsink clamps Mike is working on just for added insurance, but it probably isn't required.

ambryatim 04.02.2009 03:24 PM

What about using an outerwears motor cover???? They claim that it lets air in and keeps moisture and dirt out.....If it would work I might go for a Medusa.

BrianG 04.02.2009 03:27 PM

Eh, I think it looks fugly. Kinda like lincpimp with pantyhose. I suppose it wouldn't hurt.

Last time I work pantyhose I got alot of compliments on my shapely legs...

BrianG 04.02.2009 03:34 PM

Which "sausage" bar were you at?

suicideneil 04.02.2009 03:34 PM

Bear in mind the novak motor is sealed at both ends also- wont be an issue with the medusas which are much more efficient and run at cooler temps.

Nice...probably Ben Dovers...LOL Sorry.

Anyway, they are pretty maintenance free. Maybe lube the bearings once in a while.

ambryatim 04.02.2009 03:52 PM

Ok, cool. I just dont want to have to do maintaince all of the time. That is why I am getting away from nitro.....Oh, and the mess. Which KV are you running BrianG???

Are you talking about your "bash buddies" Brian? As far as lubing things go... well this is a public forum, might want to keep the specifics to a minimum. Never heard it called a bearing before, but I guess the way you "load it up" I guess it is bearing something... Not that I know any of that from experience, just what you told me.

brushlessboy16 04.02.2009 04:05 PM

I reccomend the cc2200, sealed motor, 76mm long, rediculous power :)

There all pretty pricey right now.

ambryatim 04.02.2009 04:28 PM

Which would you choose between CC and Medusa???

brushlessboy16 04.02.2009 05:03 PM

Im biased because i have the 2200, so i would chose another 2200

I have had mine longer then just about anyone here and it has never ceased to amaze me :)

emaxxnitro 04.02.2009 05:34 PM

yeah heres the best one http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail...MBO2200&cat=20 select motor only and mike will ship you one for 150. much better for a emaxx than a medusa as the endbells are closed. plus castle always makes good on the warranty

Good catch......Yea, I would prefer unbiased recommendations. Oh, wait I think that is an Oxymoron.

And if it ceased to amaze you, than I am taking Donations....

Arct1k 04.02.2009 05:55 PM

I have one that still amazes me but isn't being used if you are interested...

ambryatim 04.02.2009 05:59 PM

Arct1k....you have a pm ;)

entjoles 04.02.2009 07:45 PM

i had great luck with a hv4.5 and the mmm , in a e-revo , i geared it to novaks rec. and the temps where fine.

check youtube for a vid of mine on the track , it ran great

it will work good for now , go for it , and later get a medusa , the 6.5 will get good run times as well

I see that you have the smaller shaft (1/8") HV, now you were running on 4S right??? Isnt the 4.5 5000kv???? If so, wouldnt that be like 74000rpm???? or was the old HV4.5 KV different???

entjoles 04.03.2009 05:25 PM

yeah its a old 1/8 shaft motor , and novak says on their site its 5000 kv

yeah 4s

if geared according to novaks specs , it will run ok , i had no temp issues at all when geared with a 12t on the 4.5 motor , it was about 120f , and a 13 iirc jumped to 145f so i ran a 12t

also remember that a monster trucks trans has a gear reduction , not a great set-up but if you have the motor it will work fine

whitrzac 04.03.2009 08:05 PM

I had a novak hv 4.5, awsome motor for anything <1/8

escpesialy a slash:surprised: the motor is defintly over 5000kv, it was faster than my MM 5700 motor:yes:
