My first Home-made Carbon Fiber Part (E-revo motor mount)
I thought i would share this with you guys, all i used to make this was a dremel with various bits. I thought it turned out pretty good for my first attempt working with carbon fiber.
Here ya go: http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0091.jpg http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0104.jpg as you can see the carbon is a little bit thicker (and it feels quite a bit stiffer too!) http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0109.jpg As you can see i still have a nit left, i need to figure out what i want to make! http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0112.jpg the carbon was also a little thicker than manufacturer specs, but i see that as a good thing! http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0113.jpg |
Cool ... how long did it take you? Did you wet it down before hitting it with the dremel? Nice job man.

took me probably an hour and a half total, and no i cut it dry. Thanks
Damn! Thats SICK!
Looks perfect! I need a project car, I love making parts like that |
Thanks for the compliment!! I love making this stuff for my car too, way more fun than just buying parts off the shelf. Now if only i have an autoclave....then i wouldn't even need to buy pre-made carbon!!!
Did you use a mask?
Woa nice! I wish I had that kind of skills.
Nice. Superglue the edge to seal it...
Well done!
Looks great!
thanks for all the compliments guys!! All the edges are already sealed with CA. Ill keep posting the various parts that i make for my E-revo.
What is the weight difference between the two motor mounts?
Looks perfect- you should make more and sell them, lots of people ask about CF motor mounts for the traxxas MTs- the old 3906 one is most commonly sought after.
You could make some shock towers too, match the bulk mounting points, but maybe tweak the shock mounting points to allow for a wider range of options- something like the gorillamaxx, FLM or UE setups perhaps?... |

It doesn't seem like a big weight difference being about 7 grams but percentage you shaved about 35% of the weight and I'm sure it's stronger. Your also the only one that has one like it! Very nice!
nice job , looks trick
Well done. looks like some good work to me. Doesn't the aluminum serve as a heat sink in a way? If so, wont you lose some of that extra cooling?
its nice job. what tools you use to cut it like that?

Motor Mount is Finished!!
Here is my finished product, I decided that some additional support to the Motor Heatsink would help with the stiffness even more....And i was right!!! This thing is super stiff, feels like i could stand on my motor if i wanted too!!
on too the Pics: http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0005.jpg http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0006.jpg http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0011.jpg close up of the Heatsink Brace http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0015.jpg Side Shot http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0016.jpg Pictures were taken before the brace was sealed on the edges with CA. |
Very nice shizzon!
Very nice indeed. Really does look like an optional aftermarket part its so well finsied- you really should do some 3906 mounts and sell them on the bay- 'advertise' on the idiot forum and you'll soon be raking it in...
Thanks alot guys, its always nice to have something you put some effort into complimented. As far as making these for prophit goes I'm not sure if I have time with my current class load, but it is an idea for something to do during summer break.
Very nice pics of the installation... you should make a biz out of it.
Wow, all I can say is nice work. I have had machinists that work for me that couldn't do that well with professional equipment.
What type of protection did you take when cutting it? Looks awsome, great job!
i have to say that i did not take enough....when cutting i wore safety glasses and covered my mouth and nose with my shirt. this wasnt enough because i have been coughing up black spit!!! im definitely going to invest in proper protection before i do any more cutting
I doubt a rubber johny would have saved him if his dremel slipped...
well i used one of those too, just not for the dremel. I cant stand taking piss breaks!!!! J/k

New stuff!!
I managed to get a couple more parts made with the remaining carbon fiber, I revamped my speed control mount as well as started my rear brace mount. Both are incomplete as of yet, i still need to drill a whole in the brace mount and secure an O-ring to he chassis to hold the pivoting lid down on the ESC.
Here's what i came up with: http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0269.jpg http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0271.jpg http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0273.jpg Once i get an O-ring attached to the Chassis the lid will be held on tight and prevent it from falling out. The rear brace mount should also be significantly stronger then the plastic i used previously. http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0274.jpg http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0280.jpg http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0287.jpg http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/s...1/DSC_0291.jpg |
