pics. of my progress on my 3.3 conversion

Just a few pics. I have all of the electronics for it, just haven't had the time to make a bracket for the rx yet or solder things together...

I painted the springs and the chassis. After all of the brackets are made and the drilling, etc is done I am going to repaint it. Also remove the color from the AL tubes and the 17mm hexes

magman 05.11.2009 07:03 PM

I like to be different...hence the orange theme

ANGRY-ALIEN 05.11.2009 07:11 PM

Wow. that's real nice... The orange and black combo works well together.

Of all the conversions I'd seen, none were orange/black

Yep, you truly have a unique build there... can't wait to see the finished product. Are you sticking with the same colour scheme for the bodywork?

Yup, RUSTY XL-5 from here on RCM is painting a body for me. He will hopefully incorporate a little black and white into the scheme, but that is up to him...

Thanks! I am going to repaint it when the truck is totally done....I put the paint on to thick so it is peeling off in some areas and I also did not use the correct type of primer. ( I need an etched primer )...it is high temp motor paint called Plastic Cote.

The hub-carriers are RD Racing

ANGRY-ALIEN 05.12.2009 07:08 PM

I think you will have to sand down the primer with 150 - 220 grit to give the paint a good surface to stick to. Then apply the coats lightly.

Very nice!

RCShocker 05.13.2009 01:59 PM

Nothing a sandblaster can't handle to strip the paint completely and then hopefully a etched primer will help the paint stick a little better.

I am thinking of cutting off completely the old engine mount support to make a new mount for the battery tray. I mocked up the battery tray last night on the side where the old nitro motor used to be and I am not to found of the battery being up at an angle if using the existing old motor mount support...if something were to happen, the batt. would slide into the spur gear so....I am rethinking the mounting design for that side. Also, I am going to make a bracket for the rx that sits above the steering servo similar to Mike's design on his crt.5 kit.

Thats about the best method to remove paint from thick metal. It does leave a slight texture on the metal. It may show thru the paint, so if you do not want that sand the chassis after you sandblast with 400 grit paper till it is smooth. You may also want to buy an etching primer that you can sand, that will make the final coat smoother as well. If you do plan to sand the primer you can skip sanding the chassis after you sandblast it.

BrianG 05.13.2009 05:16 PM

Nice color scheme! I like orange too:

Actually, that's not exactly my car, but I photoshopped a different pic so it looks as close as I can.

TexasSP 05.13.2009 05:46 PM

I skipped over this thread several times figuring once you've seen a few revo conversions you've seen them all. Something told me to take a look and I am glad I did. That thing looks nice! Definitely something different for the tastebuds and probably the most interesting 3.3 conversion I have seen in a long time.

Thank you...This build may be taking a new turn since I posted this the other day. I am looking at a custom chassis being made for me that is 1.5" longer than stock and looks similar to the Gorilla Maxx set up. If I decide to go this route, I will have it powder coated orange.

ANGRY-ALIEN 05.13.2009 09:30 PM

Powder coated!!!:yipi:

YUP! I found someone local who will swap me some work for doing the chassis

TexasSP 05.14.2009 11:09 AM

Make sure when it goes to powder coating the edges are as clean as possible and try to get rid of hard corners. This is the only downside to powder coating is the it can chip in rough areas and hard corners.

Anodizing would work well too. I have a local guy that anodizes any color for 100 per batch, as much as you can fit.

RUSTY XL-5 05.16.2009 03:29 PM

I got your body today, should get quite a bit of it finished over the week/weekend. :intello:

Urgeoner 05.17.2009 06:11 PM

That looks really nice Mag!

magman 05.17.2009 06:41 PM

I made 2 more custom mounting pieces....one for mounting the rx next to the steering servo and 1 on the other side on top of the unused existing steering servo mounts. The second piece makes a level mount for the esc to sit on. I will post pics. tomorrow when the paint is dry and they are mounted

RUSTY XL-5 05.18.2009 06:29 PM

Magman wanted me to post a few pics of the progress of the body. Only 2 sneek peeks.

magman 05.18.2009 08:28 PM

Finished w/the custom brackets....the rx is mounted behind the steering servo....I put it in for demo. purposes. The esc bracket was made to level the surface for the esc to sit on. The second batt. tray is a Tekno tray...what I did was CAREFULLY bend the existing motor mount supports so that the battery tray would be level.

1st. 2 pics. are of the finished mock up and the second 2 are what it will look like w/components.

The batts. pictured are not going to be used...just thought I would show off some of linc's handy work!

All in all, it should have good balance.

the red anodized stuff on the motor looks really cool with the orange! do you think you will have any problems with the prong thing in the middle that holds the battary tray on the right side bending? because on my revo that prong thing bent

if problems do occur, I will just make a whole new support for the battery. I figured that I would try this approach first .

ANGRY-ALIEN 05.18.2009 10:33 PM

Very nice Mag, it's looking good... With all that power it should fly!! What colours are you going with for the body?
