Hobby City Marine ESC question

I am thinking about converting my Savage to brushless. I would like an affordable esc. I would like to use a Turnigy 80a-HV Marnie esc with an outrunner. If I got the esc and pulled the water cooling thing off the top and added a heatsink would it be ok to use in my Savage? Here are some links to the motor and esc.

What do you guys think? Will it work?

BL_RV0 05.26.2009 10:54 PM

It'll work but you'll need a bigger heatsink.

traxxasbasher13 05.26.2009 10:56 PM

Ok do you know of a heatsink that will work?

BrianG 05.26.2009 10:57 PM

Don't marine ESCs have a different style of braking? I suppose it wouldn't matter if using mechanical brakes...

And yeah, a different heatsink would be required. As far as exactly what heatsink to use, you'll probably need to mod something. Here's a decent site with some fairly cheap heatsinks: http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a...t-Sinks/1.html

By "HV" what are you talking about? 6s? 10s?

traxxasbasher13 05.26.2009 10:58 PM

HV is 5-12 lipo.

traxxasbasher13 05.26.2009 11:01 PM

Here is a site that is all heatsinks. Could someone help me fine the right one? http://www.aavidthermalloy.com/cgi-b...Anchor&pkg=All

BrianG 05.26.2009 11:02 PM

It's gonna be hard to say what will work until the heatshrink is pulled off and the available flat area is measured.

traxxasbasher13 05.26.2009 11:05 PM

So I should get a big heatsink and cut it to the right size then, right?

BrianG 05.26.2009 11:09 PM

Depends. Cutting heatsinks is difficult to do while making it look nice. I would see what the ESC looks like under the wrapper before you buy any heatsinks. Maybe there aren't any flat spots to mount to (that would suck).

Honestly, I would just play it safe and get a car ESC. Too bad there are no affordable HV ESCs out that I know of. The HW150 @ 6s is probably the best bet, but for a few dollars more, you can get a MMM...

traxxasbasher13 05.26.2009 11:16 PM

I have a MMM in my E-Maxx, but I wanted to be able to run more than 6s lipo. I know the motor that I posted a link to before is to much KV to run 7s or 8s, but there are lots of motors on HC.

traxxasbasher13 05.26.2009 11:34 PM

Maybe I will just get a Plane esc. I found a PiStix on Offshoreelectrics.com for $17.

himalaya 05.27.2009 12:19 AM

You can do that for the hardware is same as Hobbywing's Ezrun car ESCs. Software is the problem, marine version has far less adjustability than car version, no chance to fine tune your brake force, drag brake, throttle response, punch control .......

BL-revo 05.27.2009 04:30 AM

i may be missing something here but why not just get lutach's 10S esc???

traxxasbasher13 05.27.2009 11:36 PM

I think I will try this esc-http://cgi.ebay.com/New-RC-Hobbies-E...3%3A1|294%3A30

It says it can have brakes and reverse, and its only $24, so If it sucks I won't loose much money.

Let us know how it works.

BTW: Did you read the "important note"?

Quote:

Important Note: this ESC is Opto, without BEC supplying power to your Receiver, you need extra power source for your receiver. You can use a UBEC, a voltage regulator, or extra batteries as the power source for your receiver. If you hear the music tone repeat again and again for more than 3 times, you may need to check your power source to the receiver.
So, you will need a seperate BEC, and do not remove the red wire in the throttle cable.

traxxasbasher13 05.27.2009 11:42 PM

Yea I say that its going to need a BEC. The same store on Ebay sells 5a bec's for $7 that are good for up to 8s lipo.

lincpimp 05.28.2009 12:09 AM

You will still need mech brakes, as that esc has dynamic brakes, which is airplane speak for "puts the brakes on hard when you let off the throttle".

traxxasbasher13 05.28.2009 12:11 AM

I guess I will have to rig something up then. I'll figure it out.

lincpimp 05.28.2009 12:25 AM

Well, your savage already has mech brakes. So that would be ok. I did a hv savage a while back and use a Great Planes 60HV esc with a 14xl feigao and 8s lipo. I left the 2 speed and mech brakes and I could almost get 40 mins out of 3600mah lipos (8s)and could not get the 14xl over 160f, and the esc barely broke 100f. This truck would do the flux style flips and stand on the wheely wheel at 40+... Hv is great for limitless power.

I still have the 14xl and the GP HVesc w/prog card. I would make you a good deal if you want, no more than 2 hrs on either, as I bought them new and only used them for the truck. You would need a pistix, but it seems like you have that covered...

traxxasbasher13 05.28.2009 10:51 AM

I'll shot you a PM if I get the money.

hemiblas 05.28.2009 11:59 PM

I would not throw my money away on any of the ebay ESC's. Many of them are overrated and I seriously doubt it can do 8S as it claims.

traxxasbasher13 05.29.2009 12:14 AM

I'm going to try it. If it sucks other people will know not to buy it.
