Might get a Hyper Ste...
So I am thinking I could do with a Hyper STe (mainly cause the other 40 rcs are getting lonely!)....
Anyways, have a look at this and see what you think. I have a 1509 1.5d (4500kv) plenty of 2s lipos, and a spare MM or 4 lying around. And I am sure something like a futaba 3050 servo will do fine (80+oz/in). Plan to leave the truck bone stock, and try to get it as light as possible. 2s means no need for an external bec, plus 2s lipos are pretty light anyways. Differential Ratio: 3.9 Transmission Ratio: 1 Other Ratio: 1 Spur Tooth Count: 42 Pinion Tooth Count: 18 Total Voltage: 7.4 Motor KV: 4500 Tire Diameter (inches): 3.5 Tire Ballooning (inches): 0 Motor Current Draw: 0 Motor coil Ω: 0.004 Spur/Pinion Ratio: 2.1 : 1 Total Ratio: 8.19 : 1 Tire Circumference (inches): 11 inches (279.29 mm) Total Motor Speed: 33300 RPM Vehicle Speed: 42.34 mph I was not to sure about the tire height, but I figured it has to be over 3"... So geared for around 40, maybe lower, would be where I would have it. Does this all look right? I got the diff/spur numbers off Stum's posts in his thread. It just seems like for 160 bucks it is a great deal, and I have some stuff to sell that will pay for it! |
Sure, another unfinished project... but interesting one tho!

Plus I could get some of my equipment out of the toolbox and into a rc! Plus i am sure the guy at the RCM bash will have a class for these sized rcs! |
So I just bought it... Oh well, time to sell some more stuff!
|
Cool, are you going to do any bashing? If so please see how durable of a kit it is.

love the mini STe, thing takes a beating and keeps coming back for more. To date I've not broken ANYTHING :) I did have a screw back out that I missed and lost that and the bearing from the rack but that was my own fault for not checking properlry before running.
I just ordered a 2nd STe for the 158 shipped.. wow what a deal, you can't go wrong iMO. It is currently the best "value" on the market. My second will get the velineon 3500 system dropped on it, along w/ a traxxas am radio and a hitec servo most likely. |

Where did you guys find it for $160 shipped?

How about I start w/ I don't bash really... I just race so all it see's is track time just as the video shows. I race buggies/truggies for practice; but stuck w/ 1:10 for real races. I've never been to a BMX track but it seems to me you would want a full 1:8 buggy/truggy for that.

Hey Linc. You get this yet? I got mine last week and set it up with an old R1pro I had and got a Medusa 50mm 4800 from Mike and some 2s Neuenrgy 5000 car packs I had from my T4. I brought it with the the track Sunday and was just running laps for fun before the racing started. It handled way better than I thought it would. For goofs put it on the track and ran it with the Monster truck class a main. I only had a half charged pack cuz I didn't bother charging it after playing earlier that morning, but the little thing kicked ass. I was running 2nd behind an e-revo until the pack dumped at around 10 minutes. LOL Got a couple other guys now wanting to pick one up.
Fun little truck. Was just wondering if you got yours and if you got it together yet. I'm really liking mine. Best $160 Ive spent on rc in a while. |
I have not got it yet Jeff. Good to hear it works well. I look forward to turning some laps with it at the Bash...
|
Got it today!!!
Very nice looking truck, has al towers hinge pin braces, and shocks. Even has the tires pre-glued! I should have this together pretty quick, but I will take all of the fasteners out and check for thread lock. I have a feeling this will be a fun truck to run at the track, as the balance and weight distribution seem spot on. |
No pics? What setup are you going to run?

I will run a 1509 1.5d with a MM on 2s lipo. I have some pq hardcase 5100 25c 2s lipos that fit nicely. Gearing with a 16t pinion seems to be about spot on, my batt was not charged, so I will throw it on the charger tomorrow and see how it does. Gave it a spin just now and the cd unloads bad, thinking some 10k in there will do the trick. Feels like it has 0k right now... I may try 7k first, just to see the difference. Otherwise it handled well and seems to tun and track well. Definitely a track truck, not enough ground clearance to bash on my usual areas (grass and ditches), but they are more suited for a MT anyways. And here are your pics, the coloring book is in the mail for you... http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF3455.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF3456.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF3457.jpg |
How would you compare the operation of this truck's shocks to those on the stock CRT.5? A LHS has one of these for about $170 (not the one I work at though :( ) and I've been contemplating picking it up. After all I still have the MM/9L laying around from my previous CRT.5. And durability?

Ultimate Hobbies is the 3rd closest hobby store to me, so I'd be paying sales tax with them no matter what. And they have superbly crappy service from what I hear (in store) so they aren't my first choice. I'd rather spend the extra $10 and get it from a more friendly store.
If you wouldn't mind a quick comparison of the shocks, I would greatly appreciate it  |

Sales tax sucks, I would rather pay shipping! But if you can get your grubby mitts on the truck faster is worth the squeeze... |
I'd move the Rx up if I were you and get those wires away from the gearing.. PS 7k-f,10k-c,3k-r works great...
http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...miniSTe009.jpg |
The wiring is not permanent, just threw it in there to tr out my setup. I had to laugh when I saw your wires wrapped around the motor leads! Only with spectrum would that work!
What do the diffs have in them stock? Grease? feels like it. I need to move the MM over and back a bit, and reroute the signal wires. I will leave the rx on the servo, as I like the antenna routing there. Plus I can make a wire clamp for the signal wire next to the rx, using those 2 bolt holes. |
Yea Linc. All 3 diffs come with grease in them from the factory. I put 3-3-2 in mine and it worked pretty good for the track. (thats what the guys who were racing these at OCRC found to be a good setup.) Wont be pulling any wheelies with that diff setup, but it makes it more controllable on the track. These little guys can get pretty squirley with the tiny wheelbase. You could probably go up a little in the center. I think you are going to be running a little more power than I am with the 1509 vs the Medusa 50mm I have and the OCRC guys were running them with Novak GTB systems from what I read.
Metalman. The shocks actually work pretty well. I think they are better than the CRT.5 shocks. I ran it on a pretty rough track and it handled pretty well. The biggest challenge was actually ground clearance. I bottomed out pretty easy with the factory oils I'm not sure what they are but I read somewhere that they come with 30wt from the factory. I might try changing the oil to something like 35-40 weight to help with landing jumps. Durability is very good from the driving I did. I drove it on a rough 1/8 track, very rutted and some good size jumps. Did quite a few cartwheels and lawn darts sending it tumbling end over end and it took all of the beating and didn't break anything yet. The only thing that happened was I tagged the tube with the front wheel on a nose down landing and I popped a pillow ball out of the socket. This happened in like the 2nd lap I was running with it, but I went right back together in like 5 minutes and never popped out again. Like I said earlier... most fun Ive had in RC for $160 in a long time. Its a pretty cool little truck. Only real complaint is the stock tires are pretty much crap. I have a set of bowties that came with my CRT.5 I am going to try next time out. They certainly cant be worse. |

OCRC is my local track (assuming I am think of the same place... Orange County RC Raceway), but I haven't been there in a while. Guess this is what I missed! |
Any updates?
|
still running 7/10/3 on the track w/ stock everything, she's an animal :) I love the medusa 50mm v2's, this 4800 is perfect on 2s lipo. I run two laps by the time the first slash hits 1!
?what else are you looking for in the way of an update? I got my second one here and will be tearing it down in the next few days to swap out the grease (what a pain).. wish it was just a kit :) LOL |
How they are holding up and if you have had any issues with parts bending/breaking? I'm 99% sure that I'm going to get one next.
|
I hit a car tire at 30+ mph. Cracked on part of the upper arm and bent the cvd. Lower front arm and shock were fine,, as were all of the hingepins. I straightened out the cvd and ca-ed a piece of plastic over the crack on the arm. Still going strong. My temps improved after putting 7k fluid in the cd. I guess the unloading of the center diff was causing the motor to run very lightly loaded. I need to either add some cooling holes to the body, or a fan to the MM. I may make a new smaller top deck for the cd and put the MM above the servo so it has more breathing room. Other than that it seems to be a great vehicle. I think it handles better than my crt.5 I had a while back.

OK it looks like I'm going to get one!!!

Hi all new here, I've been racing this little rocket now for over a month now,and if your on the fence about buying one? Buy 2!!! I have driven everything under the sun it seem's like, nitro and electric and this little pocket rocket has put more smile's on my face than any other car or truck in ages:party:Don't let it's small size fool you, this thing is setting times at our track that made even the hard core nitro guy's take a second look:lol:I have beat the snot out of this puppy, and still nothing has broke!Just keep an eye on screws loosening up.After several different set-ups this is the one I setteled on...Diffs 353 front to rear,40wt front shocks,35wt rear,no droop front or back,I also took off the shock boots,as they seemed to be limiting the travel.CC Sidewinder/5700 combo with the stock 14t pinion,a simple clip-on 8 fin heat sink on the motor,I also cut a hole in the middle of the front window to get some air flow.Without the hole I had some thermaling issue's,but none after the hole was cut.Ive been useing bowtie's or jconcept all around depending on how dry the track is.I put the truck on my scale's to get the balance with different batteries installed, and ended up using my 8000mah 20c Spec Point Concepts battery. The heavy battery made the balance all most perfect, and the extra weight kept the truck planted on the track!!!

Linc: any plans on stretching this wheelbase?

I drove linc's the other day, I must say that this little thing is pretty fun and super quick with a Neu 1509.

I still say cut some holes i the windshield.... lol
|
i use a 1/8" drill bit or smaller to make holes in the windsheilds of my trucks. the small holes don't seem to affect the longevity of the body too much. i am most-likely getting a mini hyper ste and i will run 2 setups: light as possible for racing and jumping, and for general street runs or bashing, a heavy, long runtime setup with big tires.
i used to have issues with bodies cracking in the front when i made 1 big hole in windsheilds and the small hole method fixed that problem |
Hey guys, I finally got one of these little beasts, used but comes with a MM and a VXL motor and lots of spares. I read thru the posts on here that the VXL is probably not the best motor for this app, but with Medusa gone what are my motor options other than the a Neu, which is more than I want to spend on a motor right now. I'll post some pics up when I get it.
|
Anyone out there have some recommendations for a good reliable motor for the mini STe? Maybe hobby city has something that will work?
|
Aside from a neu, your next best bet would be a feigao L can motor. Those can be had relatively cheap and preform much better than the hobby city motors (spinning toasters of death???).
I use a 1509 in mine, picked it up for 100 bucks, very lightly used. |
