Tekin RX8 first impression

Received my RX8 combo today and my first impression after looking at it closely were good. I got the 1550kv 4038 motor and it looks nice in person. However upon closer inspection I noticed a dimple in between the fins. It seems to have happend during machining of the motor can. The ESC case has a nearly perfect fit and held well together with two different lenght screws. Yea I opened it to see what it's made out off. I got nude shots if anyone is interested. I added additional caps with transorbs.
Anyways, I plugged the sucker up and hooked it up in my GTP with a 6L hacker on 6s1p A123. Just testing it on my garage floor was impressive. I see blown diffs once again in my near future. I'm using default settings for now. I'll write a whole review later on.

Another test run completed. Brake are impressive in this ESC. Well controlled "antilock" brakes.

I love my RX8/2050 combo... The brakes are so strong and slow the car progresivly. Like it has ABS. Power is off the hook! All fully adjustable !AA++ Thanks Tekin!

Of course we want to see the insides! Well, at least I do...

snellemin 06.01.2009 01:40 PM

The brakes are BaddA$$$$$$$$. I don't need no stinkin' sensor cable with the 2 pole Hacker either. Both my diffs in the GTP are gonners again.

Teaser pic huh... You want to see the whole hand don't you, nitrofluffer....

Keep your pants on sicko.

nitrostarter 06.01.2009 02:21 PM

HAHAHA! Yep I was looking for the whole hand here...

I had the chance to check out the Tekin motor at the LHS. I have to say, it feels and rolls smoother like a 2-pole motor. Its not jerky like real Neu's or 6-pole Aquacraft motors. I'm not sure if that a good or bad thing.

XXXDAD 06.01.2009 02:23 PM

That's the most beautiful thing........ mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! More!

snellemin 06.01.2009 02:29 PM

I haven't used the Tekin motor as I have no use for it. I did spin the motor shaft by hand and it kinda felt like the Tekno motors. But I like rpm's, so I stuff the Hacker in there instead.

i just noticed that the fan begin to spin at 2 led on the unit...

starscream 06.01.2009 11:09 PM

Why buy the combo if you don't need/want the motor?

My plan was to stick the 1550 motor in a GS truggy. But plans have changed.

Have you tried taller gearing yet? I ran my Neu 1515 1.5D at 22/62 and didn't have any issues with heat.

snellemin 06.04.2009 02:33 PM

Used the current limiter last nite and worked pretty good. I didn't blow the rear diff in a instant, as I did with the limiter disabled.

tom255 06.07.2009 09:17 AM

I am not impressed with my tekin system at all!
First my motor failed Magnets came loose from shaft on race. Looks Like Tekin have issues with their motors.
Total run about 30-35min.
Track was big and fast, lots of fast passes with full throttle. System didn last 10min at all on 4S 5Ah battery. I reduced gearing and configured current limiter on 11' and got 9min runtime only before fail.
I didnt had temp issues but something wrong (Maybe timing too high or something)
On MMM similar system with CC2200 motor it finished 10min mains. (No punch control/Timing 0'/Low Start Power). MMM felt more aggressive over Tekin.Only advantage Tekin was smooth in every position.
I dont know maybe my neutral impression becouse motor failed? I dont know...
I send e-mail to tekin support but no response yet.

e-mike 06.07.2009 09:26 AM

dont worry tom255.. tekin is in the way to resolve this issue about rotor failing,,,and they are very good in customer service...im in canada and my friend had the same issue,,,,tekin sending him a brand new rotor for free..

Snipin_Willy 06.07.2009 10:29 AM

I think I saw this same issue at a race here in Oklahoma yesterday. The give away was that the rotor spun like it was riding on nothing but the bearings with no magnetic field.

snellemin 06.07.2009 11:51 AM

Bummer about the motor. I still haven't used my motor yet.

XXXDAD 06.07.2009 12:14 PM

The rotor can be repaired with Locktite( the one for bonding cylinders ) or JB weld product..... get the replacement from Tekin ( you will have to send a pic of the bad one) and check the RCTECH forum on the RX8 there you will see the process on glueing yours as a back-up. If in a bind( at the track on raceday) i'd use JBweld it cures in 5 min. you could use it right away. I run the RX8 2050 and have gotten 15 min with my 5000 25c 4 cell zippy Losi 2.0 15/45 gearing. Good luck and don't give up Tekin is #1 with service.
Just call they will pick up, sometimes e-mail takes a lil longer.

tom255 06.07.2009 02:04 PM

Rotor magnets demanetized, I didnt understand what wrong in first minutes, car behaved strangely, first it didnt had punchl, but ater it gets better-I tought that I put empty battery by mistake... and on fast passes I pressed full trottle and understood that something realy wrong I took car to pit stop and saw that shaft came out. But it was late, rotor lost magnet field. If you look shaft you will see dark areas, so you can imagine what temperature was there

Unfortunatly I am located In Europe. Its not just that easy that just call. My english is not perfect, but if they not answer to email then I dont have other choise :).

XXXDAD 06.07.2009 09:17 PM

Tom, Glue it. Clean the shaft and glue it together. Go to your automotive shop and get a glue that can withstand heat. Clean the shaft and glue it up.Let it dry 24 hours and your good to go. Try this:

e-mike 06.08.2009 12:52 AM

update...i run my combo for about 10hours and nothing else to say that amazing!!!! startup is smooth! brake is very linear...but the motor run hot(140f)..:whistle:why??? my 2200neu castle run 20f lower than my 1700kv geared for the same speed (40mph)same lipo same outside temp...(68f)and same runtime....

my esc setting

brake:100%
reverse:40%
no drag brake
timing lowest
current limiter:30%

ive used the same setting for the 2200kv

brushlessboy16 06.08.2009 09:49 PM

seems like your undergeared.

snellemin 06.09.2009 01:38 AM

Took out the 6L Hacker and swapped in the Pletty Maxx. Geared 51/17 on 6s A123 and it's a beast still. The RX8 still keeps going and the fan gets a good workout.
Peak power is a bit less then with the Hacker, but I sure didn't seem like it running up and down the street. I'll get a bigger pinion soon and stess the ESC some more.

Where's a good place to buy Plett's and 1600 to 1700kv is what I would be wanting for a buggy?

By the way I like my T8 1700kv on 5s in my Hyper 9e, just have'nt ran it enough to find out if the magnet is going to come off or not, hopefully it won't. I ended up buying the 1550kv truggy motor to, but don't think I will be using it as my truggy suffered an early retirement this weekend test jump distances on our new track build, the jumps got reshaped a little.

snellemin 06.09.2009 02:33 AM

The pletty made for buggy/truck use, are only available in 3150kv, 3000kv and 2300kv.

E-Revolution 06.09.2009 01:42 PM

Hey man, whats the price of that handsome plettenberg:whistle: ? If I don't have better place to spent my moneys, I know what do I do. Tomorrow the "Jammin X2 CRT Pro" arrives to my home. What kind of motor do you guys prefer to truggy ? If the Tekin RX8 main motor is not good choise, then I would buy one plettengerg.

Temperatures are not high even in summer here in north europe, Finland. I have been look for 6S LiPo's and 2200kv motor, or something like that.

The RX8 ESC looks cool.

Arct1k 06.09.2009 02:01 PM

Track or bashing 2200kv on 6s is too much for track....

E-Revolution 06.09.2009 02:03 PM

1700Kv maybe. Anyways, if I buy plettemberg, then 5s is then enough.

snellemin 06.09.2009 02:26 PM

Icare-rc.com sells the handsome one I have for $356,-....it's on sale.

BrushlessReady 06.13.2009 01:53 AM

i hate to be incompetent but is there a reason to pay $156 more for a plettemburg over something like a neu

snellemin 06.13.2009 03:47 AM

I own both, and built qaulity doesn't compare. Power and spool up of the plettenberg is about the same as the C50 Hacker. The neu's produce plenty of torque, but I need crazy rpm's and quick spool ups.

maybe yo ucan answer this for me. right now i can get the hacker c50 8xl 2230kv for like $240 and i am tempted to get it for my truggy (RC8T) cuz i have always wanted to try the hacker motors but arent hacker's 2 pole? and neu is 4 pole? i run only neu's right now and love them and i have been told that 4 pole is better for more low end torque and punch and that 2 pole is better for high speed. is this true? would the hacker be better suited for my inferno gt conversion?

snellemin 06.13.2009 11:15 PM

I only have the Tekno nues, so I have no idea how the regular neus behave. But based on that, I prefer the C50 in a onroad car for crazy acceleration. My tekno neus are fast but it takes a bit longer to get there.
