MMM No workie!
Hi folks! Maybe y'all out there might have a clue as to what happened to my MMM.
Now, I haven't had a response yet...and its fine. Only been a few hours, but like to see what you more experience folks might have some input. Please see letter I'd sent to CC: Hello Folks! I bought your MMM/2200 package from Superfast RC less than a month ago. This is not my first Castle speedos or combo package. Matter of fact, I still have my first BL ESC, a Phoenix 45 prior to LiPo to send to you guys with some fees of course, for an upgrade. I was very tempted to get one of the EZ Run 150 just to try while in my down time…you see, I bought like 600 dollars worth of batteries a week prior so I can drive w/o having to care of recharge for the whole day. I’m sooo sad now. Okay, back to the no workie part! Initial run was in an E-maxx stock spur with 16 tooth pinion powered by a Fiegao 8-Xl (2030 kv) and 5000 5S Flightmax 25C…no worries. ESC and motor wasn’t even breaking a sweat. I didn’t temp it because it wasn’t even warm. Yarded the MMM/2200 and 8XL outa the emaxx and put in a Losi LST with the stardard two speed tranny. Again with the 5S Flightmax 25C. Don’t know teeth count right now though, but its stock numbers. I ran a few hours, got a few full speed runs…actually I don’t think I have, I was too scared! I temp the motor during pits..highest I’ve seen was 150 degrees F. MMM fan never kicked in so ESC never got a chance to see 150 degrees. Yesterday, I finally had a chance to try my new Turnigy 5000 6S 25C LIPO in the LST. Way too fast! I’ve brought it in a few times during the test runs to do motor touch test. Wasn’t even warm. During a wheelies and pop ups…I’ve notice somewhat of a glitch…kinda like power shut off/on…I thought that was odd. It occurred a few more times and finally during a short run in my drive-way …I lost all power and the LST just coasted to a stop. I didn’t see any magic smoke nor smell anything burning. The motor was still cold. I’ve disconnected/connect power and restart many times…still no good. Switch vehicles with different radios and receivers…still no go. I’m sooo sad because I have sooo many batteries to drain in my LST but MMM no workie! Please advise…MMM with snipped batt connector is in box ready to ship to you for inspection. Thanks, |
What version mmm was it? Was the esc hot when it burned? Could anything have shorted? Were your bullet connectors plugged in all the way?
|
Did the MMM fan ever turn on? Can't remember the exact firmware number, but the fan should start up briefly when you turn on the ESC. If it doesn't, then the fan is either disconnected or bad, and means the ECS may have overheated.
|
I believe this is the V3...the batt wires are soldered in placed? V3? I couldn't tell if it burnt. Like mentioned...no see magic smoke and no burnt smell. The LSt wasn't more than 10 feet from me when this occurred. I felt both motor and esc...both not much more than ambient...roughly about 75 last night around 8pm in beaverton, oregon.
The fan did kick on during boot up, but would only come on at 150 or above after post. Just very strange! Thanks for the feedback guys. Oh, although i'm new here...been RC'ing for awhile, and have many CC plane ESCs, and a Mamba Max. |
Hmmmm...I got a response from CC. A Customer Support Rep thinks I burnt it due to my battery not being able to support the draw. Warranty doesn't cover this condition. Although he added I might get a replacement. I've been warned to not used these batts again or it might cause esc to fail. OH man....
IF so, then I wasted roughly $600 bux with the FLightmax 5000 5S 25C's and Turnigy 5000 5S and 6S 25C's. Can someone chime in if those batts can support my LST with stock two speed and Fiegao 8XL? One thing i like to mention...in 5S everything was fine. Even shift to second speed. I realized an 8XL might be a little hot in second...so I locked it out but screwing in shift adjustment and. Basically, I have small pinion with big spur...stock gear. Thanks, |
I don't see the batteries not producing enough current.... I bet those zippies would sure produce enough current, but it dies with the turnigys, Right?
|
yeap...died with the Turnigy...I went ahead and order an EZ Run 150. I will try the same set up upon arrival.
in the mean time...i willl send MMM to CC. what if the EZ run works? what conclusion can we come to then? |

I know that CC must be having a hard time keeping up with the warrantly claims, but think of all those people buying brushless Revo's and putting (you choice of poor Lipo brand here) in them. |
Damn, I must be deaf when im driving my truck outside cause I never hear the fan at all. Just powered the truck up and sure enough...fan kicks on for a little bit.
|
As soon as the battery is connect and the switch is turned on, the fan will spin for about 2 seconds. If that's happening you might still have a good controller.

Can we have an explination from the esc designers/electronics geeks of why the low powered batterys burn escs? How to fix it?

http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18981 BTW: You FIX it buy buying QUALITY batteries and not skimping. You get what you pay for. |
Hmmmm, So braking too hard/long is too much for a little device to handle; When that can't take the extra heat the current made by braking is sent into the batteries,,,; when the batteries can't take it the esc frys?
|
As long as i'm not the only one...then I guess I that makes it a little better. Sucks I have to buy an "inferior" brand esc just to prove something. I smoked a traxxas velineon....i mean actual magic smoke...called them, sent it in, and got a free replacement within a week.
I'll just have to wait and see. Thanks for the feedback peeps! |
if the battery wires are soldering in place, then this friends, is a V1 MMM! If you guys recall, V1's were released WITHOUT the female bullets in place, as Castle couldn't get the shipment in time. This isn't about batteries, this is about the essentially useless VERSION 1 MMM!!! You need a V3!
|
WOW! I thought the "soldered in place" was the V3. SO i've been duped from the vendor stating it's V3!!!
Its funny, last night i was at a LHS. THey have V3 on the esc box, inside were battery terminals with plugs...and not soldered. I told them those weren't V3. Have I been Duped and started a lie all together? Can someone please confirm? OH man..... |
Some V2's were upgraded with newer firmware and called V3, but still have bullets all the way around. All "true" V3's have soldered power wires. That's the only difference AFAIK.
V1's had bullets and other design changes on the PCB. |
The first run of V3's had the connectors on them and the wires in the box. After that they have had the power wires soldered on. So there could be both out there. The sure way to tell a V2 from a V3 is by the case and the color of the control board. The V3 case has more space between the fan and the top of the case and more space between the bottom of the controller and the bottom of the case. The control board on V1 and V2 is green. The control board on the V3 is blue. If its in the hobby shop and the box is marked V3.......then its a V3.
Mike P.S. You have a PM |

Dang you typed quicker then me......As I said in my post before though "All true V3's have soldered power wires" would not be an entirely true statement. |
lol, sorry. yeah, not entirely true, but close enough for most.
|
Trust me, its not your batteries.
You just got the standard defensive response from someone taking the easy option and blaming the batteries. I'm sure they will look after you though when you send it in, they seem like nice reasonable folk at CC :mdr: ( unless the recent 'hard times' have changed that but I hope not as I will have 2 ESC's on there way in for repair!) My V3 just died an hour ago after 2min in a Summit, because the case popped open after a fan swap. |
Hey folks...I'm sure y'all want to know the outcome as to why my MMM no workie?
Y'all ready for this................? anyone want to take a stab at it? |
connector not soldered properly.
And your lipos didn't have the correct repackaging that lets them put out 100000A continuous |
cmon GT, give a little break to CC.
Not that...lol! a few more guessers? anyone? |
Power switch

heheheh...its fo twenty six in da morn..i'm sleep now.
very close Spy... My MMM no workie, according to CC technician....drum roll...."Faulty BEC" So, has nothing to do with battery used or anything i did. Thanks Mike at CC...so I should have a replacement soon...but i already bought another one, plus a hobby wing EZ 150 and a Turnigy copy, that included program card, 2300kv motor(7xl), heatsink with fan, and 21th mod .9 pinion from HobbyKing. there you have it folks....I just couldn't understand how I fried mine due to inferior batts...espechially when no magic smoke and no smelley, let alone 25C batts. Nite guys! |
I fried the BEC out of my MGM, I just use a Rx pack with it now

I wish I had enough $$ to buy 3 ESC's in the meantime... |
