Was surfin' around the web, and found this pic... :slap:

Jeez

Dang, that's a lot... of wires....

Haha, probably from Traxxas forums too...
And they wonder why their batteries and motors smoke....

big greg 06.28.2009 02:10 AM

hahahahahahah is what i got to say about that

big greg 06.28.2009 02:10 AM

oh and dont forget the tamiya connector

What's_nitro? 06.28.2009 02:26 AM

Someone should learn how to solder....

PBO 06.28.2009 03:50 AM

Assuming the twin h/sinks are an indication of heat issues? you'd wonder about the logic behind zip tieing the wires to the can. It'd look better with a fully optioned data logger, race sensor and perhaps a Venom speed meter for good measure

With that much wire I don't think he'd need a chassis...the wire would be stiff enough.

PBO 06.28.2009 07:22 AM

This is a bit unfair but...

Love the slap immage....very appropriate

johnrobholmes 06.28.2009 10:15 AM

As long as there is plenty of copper to copper contact it will make a fine connection. The vibrations could undo it though.

lutach 06.28.2009 10:36 AM

Aveox needs better then that. I'm in tears right now lol.

Metallover 06.28.2009 10:48 AM

Look at the picture for awhile then GAAAHHHH wire nuts! Thought he went nuts with crazy wiring but not.... Sad..

I would use wire nuts wiring my house but I have higher expectations for rc..

What's_nitro? 06.28.2009 11:10 AM

Also note the proximity of the components to the AM reciever......

Metallover 06.28.2009 11:12 AM

Is that an airplane controller?

Where are his nicd packs?

BrianG 06.28.2009 12:07 PM

lol, wire nuts eh? Looks like someone went to Home Depot trying to find something, anything, that will connect two wires with no thought to contact resistance at high currents. In a house, ~120v and low current is ok to use wire nuts, but R/C? And that AM Rx so close to the wires is bound to cause trouble. This person will probably be the next person to sign up here just to ask "I have a new setup and it's not running right, but can't figure out why". Still, we all have to start somewhere...

Bondonutz 06.28.2009 12:12 PM

Shweet.

lincpimp 06.28.2009 12:18 PM

FYI, this was hiamplidude's first bl conversion... I thought the wire nuts were quite funny. It just goes to show that everyone has to start somewhere...

nitrostarter 06.28.2009 12:18 PM

LOL HiAmp was running that setup before most people on here were playing with R/C's. Him and Brian from BPP, and Promod were the original pioneers back in early 2000's.

I still remember those days.... Ah the beauty of cells... But I don't remember why the wire nuts...

BrianG 06.28.2009 12:23 PM

lol, I just noticed the picture is hosted at RCNuts. Coincidence? Maybe a joke that plays off the site name?

rawfuls 06.28.2009 12:50 PM

Found the NiCD packs (or are they NiMH?) OH, and the speaker wire soldered to the deans!

Nicd?! That's much too high quality. I'd expect to see AAs in there.

+1

HiAmp had some amazing set-ups after this one. He was one of the very first people that got me started into brushless R/C back in 2004. We should really respect him, as it was his early testing that probably lead a lot of us into brushless without even knowing.

A lot of the rules we have now about what to do and what not to do came from him figuring it out the hard and expensive way. Great guy too, along with Promod and Outkast.

Modding_out 06.28.2009 05:25 PM

My nuts are made of steel instead if wire......http://www.ultimaterc.com/forums/i/smilies/ninja.gif

lincpimp 06.28.2009 05:55 PM

You are going to love my nuts... Looks like Vince won the Celebrity Death Match against ole Billy Mays....

I can just see it in the afterlife now... Ed Mcmahon trying to hand out bogus 10 billion dollar checks, Farrah trying to convince Elvis that she is still hot, and MJ singing "Billy Mays is not my lover" at the top of his voice while ole Billy is trying every oxy-whatever product to get the white paint of MJ.... Good times...

Most of these guys making fun of ole hiamp don't realize that without guys like him outkast, and promod, the hobby would not be what it is today. There were no lipo at the time, and really hardly a controller to be found with car firmware. The best batteries out were Sanyo 2400 mah nicad and GP 3300 nimh. The Sanyo's while having less mah had kept higher voltages under load and provided more punch than the GP's.

Go to the TRX forums and look up the member hiamplidude and you will see how far back he goes. He was also one of the prime testers for the ultramaxxed gears that were so coveted a few short years ago.

It's easy to poke fun without all the information. Also keep in mind many of his setups were expiremental as no one had any clue what would and would not work at the time. The wire nuts were a way to make quick changes without a lot of hassle.

So in the words of the famous one, "keep awn keepin awn........."

(the guys who have been around should understand that quote and why I put it there)

nitrostarter 06.29.2009 01:17 AM

I wish his site was still alive so that we can look back and see how far along we have come.

I remember these guys testing out the 8s, 9L, small aveox sensored setups. They ran hot but made them work. Wanna talk about testing? HiAmp had documentation on every setup he ran, for the motor, esc, gearing, speeds, temps, etc... He provided plenty of trial and error running information so that the lesser crowd, like me, could get into BL. Outkast pioneered the dual 7xl tranny roaster. He could never put the power down without roasting those dreaded plastic gears. And of course, Promod. What a site to see, 32 cells stacked on a Racebomb chassis or other chassis....

I started with a BK18120 and Feigao 9L on a Torpedo chassis. It was great but sucked because of those darn NiMh packs. You should have seen everyones faces at the track when I pull it out. There were fascinated like it was alien of some sort. The hobby shop guys didn't believe me. That BK esc is still ticking today and running strong in a Revo 2.5 conversion. Over 6 yrs old and still making it.

lincpimp 06.29.2009 01:24 AM

I have not been in the hobby long enough to remember it first hand, but have read all of the old threads. I came in right when the MM came out, so that was my first larger scale bl esc. I can imagine the frustration the pioneers must have had. I started with nimhs and could ruin them with a MM in a rustler... Sure it was geared for 90 or something like that! (well before I found the BrianG speed calc..)

Anyways I figured the pic would give some a laugh, like I said everyone starts somewhere, and i am sure hiamp moved on from that setup pretty quickly!

rawfuls 06.29.2009 01:27 AM

His site is still up...

nitrostarter 06.29.2009 01:34 AM

sure he did, Schultz 40.160 started to do the job. The Poptart was discover and then some crazy ideas went through his head!

EDIT: Man I didn't know his site was still up. It was down for the longest. You can see my stockish Emaxx under the readers rides section... lol Thats old...
