What Ive been working on lately
Electric to Gas pocketbike.
Frame cut up: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1246295040.jpg Made a bottom plate for reinforcement: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1246295076.jpg I also finished the motor mount and welded the sprocket onto the rear wheel, but I'll get those pics later today. |
Nice...what is your power plant? Did you do the welding your self? Mig or Tig
|
Powerplant is a 25cc weedwacker engine. Yes I do all the welding. Mig welding.
|
Excellent...I've been welding mig/ stick and an even smaller am't of tig for the past 9yrs. What are you using for a welder.....just curious:mdr:
|
Interested to see how it turns out. What did you start with, and are you modifying the wheelbase?

Looks like it has some righteous ground clearance. Should be fun!
|
Ian is a dork!!!! A electric to gas conversion on a predominantly electric forum!
J/K dude, looks like a fun project, and you actually posted some interesting pics and info, I am so proud of you. Maye you will not be a post whore forever... |
I wouldn't want much more power on that bike anyway, unless you wanted to throw this on http://www.astroflight.com/index.php...roducts_id=123
|
Hehe, thanks guys! I am a dork... I forgot to get pics of the motor mount! I will get the pics on saturday along with many other parts... I have to make 2 sprockets though- need a 16mm bore 7t and a 5/8" bore 7t. Smallest I have are 13 and 17t which won't give me the reduction I need.
|
Hmm, I think a Brigg & stratton 3.5 or 5hp would fit just nicely in there and provide big power!
I have a mini-bike that has a 5hp crammed in the frame. It would push my big self to 38mph, and 45mph if I messed with the governor... |
I also have a 5.5hp minibike but it won't get my 100lb self past 25 or so. I'm thinking of electrifying it- if I decide to do that I'll just take the governour off and have some fun!
It's this one: http://ep.yimg.com/ip/I/yhst-92821211804676_2057_956635 |

Really? Hows it geared? Torque-converter? What motor?
My 5hp briggs is a beast. I run it with just a clutch, and open headers exhaust(custom adaptor machine to snuggly fit the a 18" chrome vacuum cleaner handle for the tip.) Its all flat black with the chrome exhaust. |
Yes really. Geared gaily. I think it's just the motor though- it has like no torque. No torqueaverter. It's a jiangdong (lol) 5.5hp motor, basically a crappy honda copy. I have a 5hp briggs brand new sitting around, but I'm not going to put it in the minibike because the bike it too crappy to make it worth while.
|
Would be fun tho. And then you wouldn't have to worry about gear reduction...
|
No no- I have a minibike and a pocketbike (project) and a honda xr200r, but that's unrelated.
|
Got a little more done...
Here's the engine: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1246896604.jpg Motor mount almost done- needs to be welded on to the stiffener plate/chassis: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1246896603.jpg And the rear sprocket mounted to the wheel, this turned out really badly because I had to do this weld quickly as to not warp the sprocket past the point of no return and the fact that the wheel and sprocket are lousy steel, AND I also couldn't remove the freewheel, not press fitted or threaded... so I had to weld it to itself so the motor can help slow the bike down at idol: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1246896602.jpg |
Today, I went to a industrial salvage yard and a lawnmower shop. Picked up a #35 9t 5/8" sprocket for use on the clutch, a #35 28t 5/8" sprocket to use as the primary on the jackshaft, a #35 20t 5/8" sprocket to use as the primary on the jackshaft if the bike isn't quick enough, a #40 9t 5/8" sprocket to use as the secondary on the jackshaft, which will run to a #40 40t sprocket mounted on the rear wheel, pictured above. I also bought some fuel line, #35 and #40 chain of the correct widths, and some 5/8" ID 1 3/8" OD flanged sealed bearings for the jackshaft. I have everything except the twist throttle to get this running now. Hopefully I can get it all together by sunday night, providing I can get a full day's work in on sunday. I will get pics as well.
|
Anyone?
|
Anyone what?
Sorry, I was too busy looking at that lousy weld job:rofl: Get it running. I wanna see some sparks. |
The weld is better than the pic looks actually. And i had to weld the freewheel together because I couldn't remove it, and need the engine to help slow the bike down, as the drum brakes aren't worth the $5 I paid for the bike roller...
|
More progress.
Goodies: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1247497718.jpg Clutch and its sprocket: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1247497712.jpg Welded some jackshaft bearing mounts and the stiffener plate: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1247497493.jpg Fitting motor mount with welded on washers: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...47497716-1.jpg Motor mount complete: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...47497718-1.jpg I also did alot more, but my hands were so dirty I didn't want to take my phone out to get pics... |
Did you put the chain on a granite countertop? Was your mom happy?
|
Not a countertop... Just a piece of marble my dad had lying around.
|
Remove or disable the Governor in that bike and you be hitting 40+ no joke.
I can't help you on the tork department, but the briggs is going to have less tork cause it's stock and a flat head. stock to stock (omitting Governor removal) ohv winns every time. but modified.....flat head rules. Don't call it a piece off crap if you don't know what your talking about(I'm not disss'in you man, I'm just saying so no hard feelings) as far as mini bikes go( ive got several bikes, they keep spawning in by garage :whip:) there pretty nice.......... go to this web sight http://www.oldminibikes.com/ it will rock your world when it comes to mini bikes...... Ever hit 100 MPH with a bike that has a 4.5' wheel base?.........Thats what I thought,:drunk::diablo: rock on that mini man! BTW thing was directed at your Baja mini bike. |
Seems like it's geared for about 20mph. assumming 9K at the motor and a 10" tire. I came up with a 13.8:1 ratio without your maybe sprockets if I read it right.
Personally I would at least support the rear of the engine or put a gusset ot 2 in the motor mount. And I don't know about the clutch it's probably a little light for the application without a lot more ratio or a varaible trans, looks like a fun project. Might look into something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=290219663298 Or this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=250337233246 Both have a clutch bell built in. Jeff |
I'm geared for about 23mph. Thanks for the suggestions guys, and yes the motor mount is gusseted.
|
I see now thought that was a shadow.
Have you been able to remove the clutch bell? I have a motor exactly like that but can't get the bell off. I removed the screw in the center and nothing I guess it's stuck. Tried prying on it and it's so thin I am afraid of damaging it. Jeff |
I just took the screw out, it popped right off.
|
Wouldn't have any pics would you? I totally removed the screw and it's stuck like there is something else there maybe rust on a shaft?
Thanks Jeff |
Possibly. I don't have any pics but I can say it's the weakest clutch I've ever seen.
|
I figure I should update this thread. IT RUNS!!!!
Well, it's not finished, but it turns the rear wheel... Here's the secondary jackshaft sprocket. Had to be heavily modded to mesh with the chain properly, keyed and mounted to the jackshaft: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1248128464.jpg Jackshaft completed: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1248128465.jpg Here she is: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1248128466.jpg Ignore the fuel tank how it's mounted. Just did that so I could test the motor, and make sure I had no binding. I also made some seat stiffeners, but I will get pics of those tomorrow or sunday. I hope you enjoy it. |
That looks great! Cant wait to see it completed. Are you itching to ride it?
Jeff |
Thanks Jeff! Yeah, I am excited to ride it. I just need to order a throttle, and spend a few hours on it, and it'll be done!
|
More progress!
Had to cover the motor in plastic and a wet towel to shield it from welding sparks/heat. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1249324574.jpg Welded on 1" squarestock for brace for centre frame brace. Bent/welded centre brace. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1249324586.jpg Bent/welded rear frame braces: http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1249324585.jpg Made a bracket to conform to the fuel tank- welded it, and hoseclamped the gas tank to it, with rubber guards. http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...1249324570.jpg |
Come on throttle!! We need you!
|
Well I am sure you could get an old bike cable brake assembly and use it for the time being. Be interesting getting used to stopping:lol:
Jeff |
That was my original plan... But I found this throttle for 13 bucks shipped and ordered it, not gonna break the bank eh? Had no idea this Dbag was gonna be so SLOW! He should know that the 12th is my absolute deadline! :eyes:
