KB45-17XL in a 1/5 FireHammer M/T

Hey Guys,
I know I started a thread about making a brushless firehammer M/T a few "Years" back.. I haven't started it, until yesterday. Yesterday, I was bored and thought, "What if I stick a KB45 in a 1/5th scale just for kicks". Well, I now have a firehammer M/T powered by 8S & 12S 25C 5000mAh Enerland Lipos. It ran decent for a $55 motor.. hahaha.. I'm sure the 2280 has enough balls to power this thing up. It looks a bit ugly, but I didn't have a big enough sheet of aluminum. All I had were Angled Aluminum which I had to cut one side off of it. I will have upload a video later. here are some Pictures.

I love the size of the 7th scale more so than even the 1/8 stuff. I am just skeptical about getting one for a couple of reasons...

1. durability
2. part support
3. cost of converting one to elect. ( bigger batts, motor, etc..)

your conversion look really good and look forward to your vid.

What ESC are you using?

The Older Sentilon ESCs....

Videos Added.. I will try 12S tomorrow...

nitrostarter 07.06.2009 07:37 AM

Beware of the killer pooch!

BL_RV0 07.06.2009 12:24 PM

Looks great aqwut... You hardly get any traction on the street... How are your temps?

aqwut 07.06.2009 04:28 PM

ESC was ice cold... Motor was about 60 Celcius... Batteries... cold.. I think this motor is being pushed too hard.. LOL.. I will try 12S in a bit....

nitrostarter 07.06.2009 04:51 PM

You should have asked to pull that kid in the wagon around. That would have been fun.

Looks like 2WD is doing some spinning and tailing out?

BL_RV0 07.06.2009 07:27 PM

Cory...

The motor is already stressed pulling around a 25lb truck, last thing it needs is 60lb extra on its tail...

The Truck is about 20Lbs... Feels lighter than it was with the Petrol Engine with Fuel in it...

Here it is on 12S1P 5000mAh PolyQuest XP 25C

And here's a Video on 12S

Looks like that kb has plenty of torque to push that truck around. What top speed are you geared for on 12s?

Some closer pics of the motor mount with the cover off would be nice too!!!

blueb8llz 07.07.2009 12:21 AM

nice backyard. nice conversion too

zeropointbug 07.07.2009 01:09 AM

is it just me, or do I see a disc brake in the front wheel on that beast?

BL_RV0 07.07.2009 11:49 AM

Runs better with 12S. If you've got a lower kv motor and an esc that could handle it, go 16S!

ZPB: Yep that looks like a disc brake.

aqwut 07.07.2009 12:24 PM

LOL, 16S would be nice if I had the controller for it.. heck, I'd run 20S if I could...

I rigged it up so if I do brake anything it will be easy to replace with stock Duratrax parts. And it's geared for 57MPH on 12S and 38 on 8S.... most/all of the parts are from the original Duratrax part... The motor mount was so easy to make.. I'll take a snap of that maybe tomorrow for you guys.. Pinion, I used the 14T 10mm bore transfer gear from the firehammer.. and for the 6mm ==> 10mm sleeve I used the support inserts which supports the petrol engine.. Worked out perfect!! I'd just have to bore it out to 8mm when/if I put the 2280 in...

Yeah, I have the front wheel disc brakes, I haven't mounted it on yet, only the discs.. I'm using the rear disc brakes on the shaft.. but I will eventually go to all around disc brakes to save my transfer gears and Differential...

The firehammer is a clone of an FG, and most parts are interchangeable, so parts are out there. I can't speak for the firehammer, but my FG took some of the hardest hits I've seen. During a runaway, it hit a curb as tall as the truck dead on @ 30+, bounced up and over it without losing much speed, hit the wall that was 3ft behind it, then landed and stalled out. Nothing broke or even bent from that, or the other countless rollovers, cartwheels etc.

Cost, thats another story. Thats why I stretched my revo. Being 10lbs lighter, the cost of electronics will be lighter too. Still would love to do one though.

Aqwut, thanks for sharing your conversion and making vids for us too

suicideneil 07.07.2009 08:45 PM

Aye, nice work on the conversion Aqwut- she's a real beast.

BL_RV0 07.07.2009 09:38 PM

Seems like that KB will fry at 50mph...

lydiasdad 07.07.2009 11:28 PM

I have several runs on a kb45-8xl in my 1/5 scale buggy and am happy with the power, however my temps are high on the motor. It does make impressive power though. Nice conversion by the way, pretty snappy on 12s

aqwut 07.08.2009 12:01 AM

Thanks guys.. the motor may fry... but it hasn't shown any sign of being demagnetized yet.... fan really helps with the heat, going to put a tube over the motor to see what happens.. it still runs after 10 minutes of play... That KB-45 is not the most efficient motor by far.... but if you could find a way to cool it down, it works like a charm...

aqwut 07.19.2009 11:33 PM

Well, KB45-17XL runs great on 8S... yesterday at the track, I ran 12S and forgot to turn the fan on... Motor reached temperatures of 109 Deg. C. Of course, rotor was demagnetized and pooched. Here are some pics of the mounts.. it was easy..

Here's a video.. of it for fun, with the 2280 and 4S ... ESC Temp was 40 Deg.C , Motor 44 Deg.C and Batteries were 57 Deg.C a bit too warm.. Wait till you see the 2280-6 HA on 8S... :)

jsr 07.20.2009 01:56 AM

Wow, the FH flips over on 12s!...that's some serious power. It looks like even on 8s, it has plenty of power for nice acceleration and speed. In your videos, you seem to run for pretty short periods of time. What is your runtime on the packs you're running? Also, what temps are the ESC and motor hitting if you run until the packs are dead (hits LVC)?

Thanks.

aqwut 07.20.2009 07:56 AM

My text was off.. on the picture.. The batteries I was using were 3700mAh.... and used two of them, that whole run drew the whole two packs.... Just got the batteries charged, and it drew 3500mAh per pack....

That looks very nice! Do you got an other vehicle so I can see how big it really is? (My LST also looks small on pictures, but if I put my Rustler VXL beside it the LST is huge )

And I've got another question; where do you get that aluminium? I've been in several stores in the Netherlands an Germany but I can only find damn tin aluminium. I have to use steel to make my motormounts. But I could only find steel with holes in, that isn't that cool...
So could you/anyone give me a site where to order that aluminium?

Thanks!

I get all my aluminum from eBay... I just buy angle aluminum and 6061 sheets.. It's very cheap... You should have a lot of aluminum over there... Thyssen Krupt is a huge company in europe... try buying from them, I'm sure you could buy aluminum from any fabricator..

aqwut 07.21.2009 12:06 AM

Here's the picture of how I made the mount..
