Neu motors came in

New motors came in, Wow, I didn't realized that different winds had different wire thickness... I hope these neu's work well.. Reason..

1 They cheaped out and didn't use the bushing for 3 of the motor wires(one motor), only used shrink wrap.

2 Shafts where all different lengths.

3 Three of the motor shafts were cut and rounded very well, one looked like it was cut with a grinder or dremel.

I'm sure it's nothing big, but the consistancy is just not there... Because all of the German made motors, everything was consistant... Maybe I'm wrong?

littlegiant 07.21.2009 12:42 AM

Looks like they did not work on 2 of the motor shafts. They probably forgot to turn them down to the same length.

zeropointbug 07.21.2009 12:54 AM

Well I wouldn't doubt the consistency on the Lehner... it reads ISO 9001 right on the motor there, which is a quality control/manufacturing standards certification.

aqwut 07.21.2009 09:23 AM

Just' giving a bad taste in my mouth when I got my first batch and I noticed small things like that... I've never noticed these things with my lehner motors.. But they could've just forgot... It just sucks thinking of what other bigger mistakes it could lead to... something so small and preventable.. Shoot, If i only bought one, I would have never noticed anything....

Cool it. LOL they are just shafts. The longer the better! I bet girls will choose the motors with the longer shafts. It is their instincts. kidding. Dun kill me for me.

Oh yeah!!! nothing wrong with the shafts.. and nothing wrong with the motors either.. but when you spend that kind of money, it's about quality/workmanship. Know what I mean, first a shaft, then a bushing, then what next?...

nitrostarter 07.21.2009 03:37 PM

I can assure you, I have own quite a few Neu's and have seen most of Linc's collection of Neu's. They are hand-built quality! Extremely nice and smooth. Never had a problem yet.

However, I haven't had 4 of the same motors in my hands to compare. I wonder if its just a different person building different winds?

BrianG 07.21.2009 03:42 PM

Well, I can't comment on the shaft lengths or the lack of bushing on the wires (QC falling looks to me), but the wind thickness makes sense. Motors of a physical length are all gonna be rated for about the same amount of power. So, for X amount of power, higher winds will draw less current and so the winds aren't as thick. Plus, the fewer wind motors most likely use larger coil wire (or multiple to make up a larger one).

Leave it to the experts and you questions will be answered:lol:

At least you admit to being lazy...

From my limited (HA) experience with various motors the neu seem to be the best out there. Generally the external looks are a bit questionable (black motor with crappy sticker) and I have noticed the variety of shaft materials that neu seems to use. I have a feeling you have a few different age stators in those motors, that would account for the differences in the shaft length and appearance. I once returned a neu with a fault stator and got a heli model stator back, the shaft must have been 1.5" long... Kinda funny, I just trimmed it down to the correct length and ground a flat spot on it.

I do understand your feeling s though, these motors are not cheap, and if I bought them neu I would be concerned about these same things. I guess function beats form, at least for me.

zeropointbug 07.21.2009 07:07 PM

Yes, they would use a 30+ gauge wire and just wind them in a bundle... obvious reason being you can't wind 12awg or 10awg thick wires around a stator, at least not safely (damaging wire insulation).

This makes me ask the question, the people who have had problems with breaking motor wire leads, what Kv. winds were they? I can see the high Kv. winds having the problems... my 1512/3D has had zero issues with wire breakage and I have moved, readjusted, kinked the leads many times. They look to me like they would be about 12awg wire size equivalent.

bdebde 07.21.2009 10:55 PM

Date of manufacture could explain some differences, they make changes from time to time. They never used to put the bushings around the wire at all, just heatshrink.

Unsullied_Spy 07.21.2009 11:14 PM

It's what's inside that counts  The only German motor I've ever had chunked it's bearings and fell apart (literally) within just a few hours of use. Typically German, great for a little while and then it all goes horribly wrong. Looks like a hiccup on the QC team's part, but it really isn't anything to worry about.

whitrzac 07.21.2009 11:44 PM

WTF are you doing with $1000+ in motors???

zeropointbug 07.21.2009 11:58 PM

Yah, what ARE you doing? :oh:

Metallover 07.22.2009 12:42 AM

Duhh, a quad-Neu powered 5th scale!

Ryu James 07.22.2009 03:11 AM

aqwut,
i see my lehner arrived safely...uh, your lehner i mean. glad to see it. those Neus are looking great! as long as the shaft length on each of them is 3/4" or longer then you will be fine. hell, my hacker motors have only 1/2" shaft. if they are shorter than 3/4" then call Neu (number on their site) and they will replace/fix.

you know how i bought that 2215 from offshoreelectrics for my 1/5 conversion, well the mounting holes on the front endbell werent even threaded. so i called Neu and they sent me a new endbell in like 2 days. they didnt even want me to send the motor in or anything. they just took my word for it and sent me new endbell, bearings, and screws and i just fixed it myself.

anyway, i can tell you one thing right now. if all you have driven so far is German motors and these are your first Neu motors you are in for a treat. you will never buy anything else from here on out. i am willing to bet that. i have tried all the other german brands now and although they are built well and are great motors they just dont have the same efficiency as a Neu or the same torque.

let us know what you think after you try them out. enjoy!

aqwut 07.22.2009 04:47 AM

I'm sure the motors will work flawlessly ...

Brian.. Yeah, I kinda figured that about the wires.. the lower KV motors have thinner wires... Also the one that didn't have the bushings had the thickest wires... so maybe, wires were too thick to use bushings... but I just triple shrink wrapped it to be safe..

ZPB... I was replacing all of the cheap motors with either a lehner or a neu.... If lehners were the same price as neu.. I would've bought them... :) but I'm always willing to try new things...

I have yet to try these babies out, Still waitin' for pinion gears .... Mike went away, and so did Dan Fischer... and SDP-SI doesn't work for me... so I'm kinda screwed...

Dude, you know I have pushed the piss out of every NEU motor I have owned. I have ran them at RPMS WAY past their spec sheets say. They have been perfect and continue to kick butt in every application I use them in. They are hand built so you will have differences in tolerances...etc. Doesn't effect quality though....

Awesome... ! that's what I needed to hear.... Can't wait to try them out... JZE, did you have the 5mm or 8mm shaft..

magman 07.22.2009 08:51 PM

I also have tortued 2 of my Neu motors and one blew up on the second run and was replaced ( 18 months ago ) and since then...flawless.... and both are cool running as well. I have other motors as well...medusa, etc...and IMO they are worth the extra $ for piece of mind.

All mine are 5mm.

on a side note, jzemaxx...i have a neu question for you.

I've got an itch to drop a 1515 1.5D in my 8ight roller on 6S.

on 6S i run a max rpm around 55,000rpms with the neu 1Y...after about 10 top speed runs, i'm nearing 180 degrees geared 43/25. do you think i can realistically keep the same gearing with a 2700 motor?

I don't wanna waste my money if it's gonna be too much of a strain on the motor. what do you think?

wow dude! that nuts. i would think the 1y on 6s is max. i know guys who have run the 1.5d on 5s but not on 6s. that puts it well over 60k rpm doesnt it?

I am working on building a 2.0 buggy myself with the same motor. I will be running 3S and 4S. Above that I think is to much rpms for extended run times. But that all depends on the length of your races. Mine are around 15-30mins.

nitrostarter 07.23.2009 12:20 PM

Thats actually only 59,940 rpm's unloaded, so less than that with a load.

My guess is with that gearing, you wont be able to make that many passes. Keep in mind also that Delta winds love to suck amps so I might push the ESC pretty hard.
On the other hand, keep the roller light and free rolling and I don't see a problem making a couple passes.

BL_RV0 07.23.2009 12:42 PM

Stum put a 1515 1.5d on 6s into an e-revo... With maxamps lipos.............

not sure his gearing was as tall as 25/43 tho...

yeah, that's what i was thinking. and if it's got a huge amp draw it could be bad for the batteries too. maybe i'll just stick with the 1Y and start to build on my 18B for awhile. :)
