Off-topic: Look at this turtle!

Wasn't sure if this is against the rules to post off-topic stuff here, but I wanted to show everyone this.

I found this little guy in my driveway when I got home from work one evening. I think it's just unbelievable. Never have I seen a turtle that small. Bondonutz says it's a four-lined musk turtle and that they only get a few inches even when full grown. Snapped a few pics then sent him on his way. Wouldn't have made much soup anyway!

We had some turtles as pets a few years back. I made an enclosure, approximately 4X8, out of chicken wire. Then I got a small plastic kiddie pool at Wal-Mart and sunk it in the ground. It was maybe 8 - 10 inches deep and 4 feet in diameter. Worked real well. We fed them worms and grubs and once in a while feeder gold fish. When it started to get cold in the fall we just let them go in the river here in town where we live.

The little squirt poses well doesn't he ?

Kevlar 08.08.2009 10:13 AM

I had a turtle when I was in high school, man do they stink! They are cool but not very playful. I love the idea of an outdoor enclosure with catch and release, but that wouldn't work so good up here.....

We go off topic all the time around here.

That is the cutest fricken' turtle I have ever seen. Thanks for the share.

Yes he does pose quite well!

He doesn't seem very afraid of anything.

Sometimes when fishing in the spring, I will see a few of the year's early hatch out swimming around.

My wife scooped one up and named him speedie. She had a really good time playing around with him.

In captivity they rely on you to change the water periodically, considering they have to swim in their own shit. Eating their natural forage creates a lot of amonia. Even a diet of Reptomin "formulated turtle chow" will still foul the water fairly quickly without some sort of filtration or H2O changes.
I used to breed turtles when I was kid, No the offspring didn't look like me ? I had a regular farm, I raised them and sold them to various pet stores and even shipped them across state.

OMG.....that thing is SWEET. Im suprised he didnt hide!

simplechamp 08.08.2009 02:36 PM

He was a feisty little bugger, wasn't afraid of anything. Tried to bite me a few times, it was hilarious. He was surprisingly strong, it's hard to explain, but his legs could really push when he wanted to escape from me. And he really wasn't too interested in posing for me either, took me a half hour just to get those two good pics!

glassdoctor 08.08.2009 02:53 PM

LOL that's pretty cool. Last summer I found a baby snapper but he was way bigger than this little bugger. Probably about silver dollar size. I brought it to the track that night and the kids were playing with it.... one kid poked his finger at him and got bit.... actually drew blood ha ha ha

What's_nitro? 08.08.2009 11:13 PM

Sweet find. I definitely would have kept it. About 2 months ago on my way to work there was a "young" snapper in my back yard about 8" diameter. I gave it a stick and it snapped the stick in half... :oh:

brushlessboy16 08.08.2009 11:23 PM

At my high school, right across the street is an elementary school, right before the end of the year there was a giant snapper in the play ground, probably a foot long. some how i got talked into trying to get it to bite my shoe... it took about a 1in triangle out of the toe of my shoe. nasty MF.

at least i had the presence of mind to take my foot out before we tried to mess with the turtle

What's_nitro? 08.08.2009 11:25 PM

^ Geez, you probably could've ridden it home!

Andrew32 08.08.2009 11:44 PM
