1/6th Scale Chevy Monster Truck

I won't ramble on to much. I wanted something that would put simply, run stuff over. It started out with parts just laying around in the shop so if you see "Junk Yard" as a name anywhere that's why.

Truck Specs

- 1/6th scale Chevy Silverado body from Wallie World
- Modded TXT chassis with extended upper shock mounts (I have ahd some chassis plates design in CAD I've been trying to get machined but they're to big for most people to do)
- Integy Savage shocks de-anodized and running MGT springs 40wt oil
- Junfac rod ends, 10-32 all thread sleeved with 1/2" OD Delrin
- X-factor Axles converted to 17mm hexes (From a Mammoth ST). Rear Axle is locked front axle has 10k oil. Custom Servo mount I designed and had laser cut out of 16ga steel.
- Ofna full offset rims (I want to change out to something nicer)
- Jumbo Kong tires (8.5" OD)
- E-maxx Trans converted to single speed (This is the weak link right now as you can hear in the video)
- Revo drive shafts (took about 4 complete shafts to make them long enough)

Electronic Specs

- MMM V3 ESC with CC BEC
- Hitec 5995 Steering Servo
- (2) 7T Cobalt Puller Motors
- Turnigy 3S 20C 5000mah lipo
- Spekky receiver (3Pk)

I still have a pretty long to-do list for this thing but it sure is a blast to drive. Right now I'm looking into what kind of Maxx trans I can build to hold up to the power this is dishing out. I do plan on gearing down a bit. I don't need all the top end this thing has right now.

This is a really COOL prodject !
Whats the measurements and weight of this beast ?

NickRummy 08.24.2009 01:52 PM

Good question! I'll have to try and through it on the skid scale and put a tape measure on it here in a bit.

Foxracin 08.24.2009 02:00 PM

Awesome man. I love it. I have always wanted to build one of the 1/6th scale Ford rangers but cant find a body to start with.

We need more video. lol Looks like its got good power with the wheelie. Need to throw a CCneu 2200 on there with a 4 cell and see what it will do.

NickRummy 08.24.2009 02:03 PM

I originally had a big 600xl setup to go in it but I really want smooth low end power. I like crawling a lot and today it proved that it can crawl really well despite it's massive size and high COG.

I'll definitely get some good video of it soon. Right now I'm trying to get all the small things buttoned up and getting it running right.

Andrew32 08.24.2009 02:15 PM

LOVE IT! the torque twist on that thing is a beast!

snellemin 08.24.2009 02:17 PM

Nice project Rummy. I loved 0.21 into the video.

A complete set of running lights would be icing on the cake, and look Bitchin'

There are lights installed in the headlights and tail lights from when it was a Walmart runner. They are all still there. Just gotta get time to wire them back up with the new electronics.

She weighs in a 20lbs. Over all length is 31", track width is 19.5" with a wheelbase of 18.5".

brushlessboy16 08.24.2009 03:38 PM

Very nice, the only bad part i see is "chevy"

maybe get some low kv in runner motors just to say its brushless?

Very nice project!

I've ran a few brushless motors in crawlers and have not been happy with them. The start up under load just doesn't compare.

I'm glad you did because the tranny sure didn't!

Semi Pro 08.24.2009 04:19 PM

thats a great rig

NickRummy 08.24.2009 04:38 PM

Maybe you guys can give me some input. I have the older E-maxx tranny in it right now from the 3906 truck. I know that the newer E-maxx trannies will not bolt directly up but I made my own trans mounts for the older trans anyway. Would it be worth fitting in the newer style trans and replacing this older one?

Here's a shot of the trans after being converted to single speed,

Freaking awesome

Bondonutz 08.24.2009 05:26 PM

Can you please please more specific about what Toy truck you started with ?
Thanks.

Are you referring to what truck the chevy body came from? If so, it's a Jesse James West Coast Choppers Chevy Silverado. I'm not sure exactly who makes it.

EDIT: I didn't really start with any truck in particular. Just knew I wanted something big. So I got that body first, got the axles because I knew they would hold up to some punishment then started fitting everything together after that.

Arct1k 08.24.2009 11:32 PM

Damm those are sweet motors....

nitrostarter 08.25.2009 12:44 AM

Some serious brushed power there!! Looks great! Clean build.

As for the tranny, the 3905 tranny is much stronger and will handle the power better than the 3906 tranny. If you were going to make the plates, I would definitely do the swap.

Is there anything that needs to be done to the 3905 to beef it up or are they pretty stout stock?

Arct1k 08.25.2009 08:47 AM

A steel idler is about it...

NickRummy 08.25.2009 09:37 AM

Does it use the same idler as the 3906?

Arct1k 08.25.2009 10:21 AM

Sorry ignore me - I had by 3906 and 3905 mixed up as i was looking at your pic...

3905 is supposed to be fine as is...

No problem. I never knew why they made the part number for the new truck smaller than the older?

NickRummy 08.25.2009 01:54 PM

I hope you guys like pics  I didn't bring the camera with the video... I probably won't take any video until I get the trans sorted out. No one enjoys hearing that noise.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...DSC_0157sm.jpg

Took it to the rocks to see how it would do. The transmission complained quite a bit but other than that it had plenty of power with the current gearing and the suspension seems pretty stable. Center of gravity was a lot better than I thought. I'm not running any foams at all in the tires. Sometimes it's ok and other times it's not, mainly when there is a heavy load on one tire. I think I'm going to have to modify the stock foams and put them back in. Anyone know of 3.2" beadlock wheels with 17mm hexes? Full offset preferred. There weren't to many places it wouldn't go. No real challenging climbs.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...DSC_0156sm.jpg

Then it was over to the baseball field for some low traction high speed testing! They didn't mind me running for a few minutes.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...DSC_0177sm.jpg

You can definitely see the need for foams when running wide open.

Arct1k 08.25.2009 02:01 PM

maximizers... 1/2 offset...

http://www.rcplanet.com/Maximizer_17..._p/max1731.htm

Foxracin 08.25.2009 02:03 PM

Maximizers are 3.2 and 17mm. They have zero and half offset. I got a set currently coming in the mail so I will let you know how they work.

http://www.maximizerproducts.com/

Love the pics man. I like the one in your avatar with the tire rolled over.

Foxracin 08.25.2009 02:04 PM

You beat me to it Arct1k. lol

NickRummy 08.25.2009 02:13 PM

Man and to think I actually ran those exact wheels on my LSP for a while too.....

Does 1/2" offset mean that the hex is basically flush with the back of the wheel?

chrismechanic 08.27.2009 08:11 AM

rim offset

hi all... half offset is half an inch wider i.e the rim sticks out half inch more per side and gives you a more stable wider truck, maximizer bead locks are good strong rims ive now had 2 sets and very pleased with them, nice build

medusa'd maxx 08.30.2009 06:06 AM

3905 tranny

Nick I've beenrunning 6s Lipo and a 1600 kv 80mm medusa through a stock 3905 tranny for about 12 months with zero problems with the tranny
it's a really good upgrade plus the 4 m4 screws that mount it make it relatively easy to mount
nice looking truck!

its me 08.31.2009 05:02 AM

OMG!!! sick project man!! now you got me thinking, probably on of the best looking 1/6 conversion ive seen :)

Thanks!

Took it out again today and had a blast with it.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...l/IMG_0657.jpg

Didn't get to much video. It was a new place to run with some massive hills and TONS of mud. I actually got MYSELF stuck in the mud haha

Bashing video

Then towards the end I was racing up a hill against a slash and drifted over to the left and caught a downed tree head on.....

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...l/IMG_0660.jpg

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...l/IMG_0662.jpg

Did some damage. Looks like it snapped the housing right off and managed to snap the axle too.

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...l/IMG_0671.jpg

http://i736.photobucket.com/albums/x...l/IMG_0672.jpg

These axles are pretty beefy but I'm not sure they can take the punishment.

NickRummy 08.31.2009 04:10 PM

I found this I thought I would post too. It's from when I first started thinking about how to put it all together. The upper part of the chassis changed a bit but other than that this is how I cam up with the transmission placement and mount, links lengths and servo mounts.

I've seen all aluminum Clod axles somewhere ? Maybe Icky Integy and they be modded to use your set up w/the Emaxx tranny ?

TXT axles are basically the shafted version of clod axles but they're still pretty narrow compared to these. I believe the clod and TXT axles are about 11" hex to hex and these axles are around 14" hex to hex. I'm running the most offset I can get on a wheel to make them as wide as possible too which puts more stress on them.

Bondonutz 08.31.2009 05:03 PM

Well, when you buy new axles to replace the broken one I hope you have a plan for beefing them up. How about some angle aluminum top or bottom of the axle to truss it up ?

magman 08.31.2009 07:52 PM

Cool

Foxracin 09.01.2009 09:43 AM

That thing is way to cool man. I love it. Hate you broke it though.

redshift 09.04.2009 02:42 PM

Aw that sucks you cracked up the front... Can't believe how realistic it looks!

You need to put a camera right on the ground, I'll bet with the sound muted a lot of people would be fooled into thinking it was a real MT!

Very cool build Nick!
