Race Inspired MBX5T
Okay, I got tired of nitro and I probably will never go back to it now. It's just too much of a hassle and BL is so much more rewarding. Less variables and more tech gets the win for me. But, what to do about the off balance setup? That's where I come in...
I like Mike's setup, but he didn't have any of his mounts in stock right now. So I'm forced to use a Tekno lightweight motor mount. I'm not sure how I feel about this mount since it requires me to hack up my nice BCE chassis. But, if I can make it come out clean then I think it will be worth it. The main idea here is to make a balanced and fast truggy. Here's a rundown of the basic specs: M8 2.4 for control 5955TG for steering Tekin RX8/T8 1700kv truggy combo Neu Energy 5ah XPI lipos, 2s + 3s in series dual RCM battery trays modified BCE chassis with Tekno mount 6.5 bullet and TRX connectors I ordered a long shank 17T pinion when I thought I was still running this truck on 4s. I also have a regular 18T pinion and I believe a 11T or 13T in the pit box. I might have to get something a little lower though, I don't think 55+ mph was intended for the track. Plus I'll want more snap  Here is my Moogen stripped all the way down http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1639.jpg Some of the goodies http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1641.jpg Probable motor placement http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1642.jpg ESC placement (radio tray will be cut for only steering servo) Possible Rx placement...still not sure if the ESC will cause interference. I can mount it on the front brace too I think. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1646.jpg Initial Mockup http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1648.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1644.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1643.jpg Tore apart the center diff to put in 10K fluid and take off the mech brakes. I also wanted to see if I could mount a plastic 44T Kyosho spur. Not sure if I can yet, we'll see. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1658.jpg Parts I'm still waiting on: Charger (Hyperion 1210i and dual LBA10s) RCM battery tray Tekno motor mount Tekno mount plates Tekno pinion 2nd Neu battery order |
Looks great! You should have no problems mounting the motor like that. Watch your balance with the 2s and 3s packs as well.
|
Thanks! Yep, that is going to be the tough part. I'm going to weigh all the components and even it out as best I can. I actually think the 3s pack would be better on the servo side since the T8 is so heavy.
|
looks great! keep the updates coming
|
Nice...I tore apart my mbx-5T yesterday and in the process of changing fluids as I continue my BL conversion. Just waiting for the motor mounts to come back in stock so I can place an order w/Mike for that and a motor & batt. tray
|
The Mugen motor mounts are available now. :)
|
Cool bro, looking forward to more progress...
|
Thanks guys and thanks Mike, I might alter my setup, not sure yet. This places the motor extremely close to the center diff so I may keep it this way.
Got more goodies today. My charger and other batts should be here Monday/Tuesday and that should be it. I was hoping to at least have my charger here by today or tomorrow so I could possibly run it but my time is pretty crunched this weekend anyway. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1659.jpg Hyperion goodies http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1660.jpg O rings galore, picked this up for $7 a while back http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1661.jpg Kyosho spur vs Mugen spur. As you can kinda see, the inner hole is just too big. I need to sleeve it in order for it to work. Other than that, it seems to bolt up. I just need to find some thin tube to go over my drive cup shaft. Sounds a lot like contraceptive, huh? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1662.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1663.jpg Center diff reassembled with 10K fluid. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1664.jpg Front steering plate, stock config http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1665.jpg Same plate, flipped for motor clearance http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1666.jpg Placement of brace in new spot. It's a little offset, but it should be fine. Still playing with this, might have to make the braces go to the center diff instead. I don't like that design, but this may not serve it's purpose in this location. More on this later. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1667.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1668.jpg |
You can kind of see the outline for the cut of the flipped spur gear location here:

Motor and battery placement. I'll have to trim the battery tray a little. It's a tight fit on this side, but the payoff will be balance!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1679.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1680.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1681.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1683.jpg And the man behind the build. My buddy Dan took this while I was working tonight http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1669.jpg |
won't the balance be off w/the motor and 1 batt. on the same side while only 1 batt. on the other? I know that the servo helps counter the weight a little, but, will it be enough?
Nice work....I am doing my mbx 5T conversion as we speak so I am anxious to see how yours handles. |
Guessing he's going to use a Caster style saddle pack layout.... two batt trays, with 3s opposite the motor...

Even in doing so to ideally spread the weight out you would need a center diff motor mount where the motor was above the diff, not next to it....I am not criticizing his work at all..in fact his ideas are good, just stating that if his intentions are to truly balance everything for racing, the motor mounted above the center diff would be ideal. |
I agree on the center motor mounted diff setup, but I didn't like how high the rotating mass would be and decided the lower CoG would be a better advantage. Yes, I'm running a 2s on the motor side and a 3s on the servo side. The servo, ESC, transponder, and Rx should be nearly the same weight as the motor. Whatever the difference is, I'll make up for small lead weights to get a good balance.

Looks great, what shocks has it got fitted there not standard are they?
|
Thanks magman! Did you get your Moogen mount yet? I'm still not sure which I like more, but I'm gonna try the Tekno one. It gets the motor closer to the driveline and center of the chassis but I have to modify the chassis. Mikes mount might be a little lower, which is always better. I'm not sure if his would make my motor hit the front steering plate though. Another trade off!
Those are MBX6 Big Bores. Not stock at all :mdr: Just found more goodies on my doorstep. The Neu Energy 2s and 4s packs are here. I'll be cracking them open and performing surgery. This will be my first ever lipo reconfig! Making two 3s packs so I have 2 lipo setups for the truggy. Plus I can run the 2s and 3s packs as singles in the short course truck I plan to buy (Slash or SC10). I also got Mike's 2nd battery tray in, thanks for the fast shipping Mike! I knew UPS could be slow, but they're taking waaaayy too long to get my chargers here. USPS is all I'll do from now on, can't stand the men in the brown truck!!! |
I did not get my mount yet...ordered it last night along w/a custom size batt. tray.....so I will probably get them by the end of next week. No worries...I 'd much prefer to wait a little longer if needed for Mike's parts, for they are quality and done right the first time.

What are you saying? hah! :mdr:

Got a lot done between last night and today. Just about finished
More goodies: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1684.jpg New brace location drilled and ready to go http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1685.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1686.jpg Radio tray cut http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1687.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1688.jpg Approximate placement of everything http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1689.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1690.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1691.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1692.jpg |
Motor mount jig I made to make it easier to make the holes. The first two still got jacked up somehow but I think I figured out what happened. I also should go to sleep instead of staying up so late working on projects haha!

Mounted up (metal shavings EVERYWHERE!)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1703.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1704.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1705.jpg Next problem: New front brace is slightly in the way and is in the way of the steering servo. Soooo....trim it up! Then space the servo a little bit. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1706.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1707.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1708.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1709.jpg Placement of the trays. Had to trim them a little bit but they came out great. Very close to the chassis. I still need to mount them, but that's just about it. After mounting them I'll tear apart everything for a good final clean and lube then give it a test on 4s. I still have to reconfig my Neu lipos for two 3s packs! |
Just got the battery trays mounted. Only 2 screws each right now, but I'll probably go to 4 each once I pickup more hardware. I'll post those pics tomorrow. I also need to pickup a countersinking bit, some velcro, balloons, and some foam. I ordered my zinc flux and zinc solder with some 10ga wire to do my lipo reconfig. Should be here the middle of the week. Until then, I'll just run it as a 4s or 6s setup. Mmmmm....never tried 6s before, hehe.

350+ views and only a few comments? Come on, post up!
Got the 2nd RCM tray cut to length and clearanced http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1716.jpg First one mounted http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1717.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1718.jpg 2nd one ready to go in http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1722.jpg All mounted up http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1723.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1724.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1725.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1726.jpg Made a nice little Y harness to connect them in series http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1727.jpg All mounted up. Cleaned, ready to rock. ESC and Rx are only temporarily mounted. This thing ran GREAT! Got the batts all charged up and ran it on 4s. Very nice with plenty of torque and very controllable. Would be fantastic for racing on small to medium tracks. Bigger tracks will need 5s though! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1728.jpg |
Nice job...looks nice and neat!
|
Yep, and I even saved room for a personal transponder! :mdr:
|
Got it all buttoned up for tomorrows races. Small track, but will still be a ton of fun. I need to pickup a slash or SC10 for the short course class. Not too many 1/8th scales there. I heard there's good 1/8th racing in Tacoma though, so I might go there and see how I like that. Motor temp never got above 115* and ESC only had two LEDs for temp. AWESOME!!!
Pics and vids from tonight: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1738.jpg post grass run http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1740.jpg garade vid...fun on that slick floor! <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QfohDNCKqt0&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QfohDNCKqt0&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> |
impressive work, nice saddle, mine is 1 side batt. I dun have skill like you. The car is well balanced & tidy.

hehe love the vid sounds like a small dog!! Very nice build hows the weight distribution is it a little tail heavy or not to bad?

Been racing this a bit, not as much as I want to and on a small track. I love the truck, won't sell it. I'm going to build a 1/8 buggy, probably an RC8. Not sure if I'll do a custom two pack design like this one or just buy Mike's kit. If it's as good as people say it is, Mike will probably be getting my money this time! :mdr:

Were you having problems with the pin inside the side of the spider gears. The one that goes in the outdrive. I find it to be smaller than the similar buggy or truggy pins. Did you ever break one of those pins? LMK as I am also building one. Thanks in advance.
|
I've never had a problem with the diffs. Actually, this whole truggy has been hands down the toughest thing I've had. I've ran into walls, poles, berms, cartwheeled, endo'ed, slapped the chassis - you name it - and this truggy has laughed at it. The only time I've broken anything is when I've hit the same I beam of the indoor track with the right side tire, broken 2 arms this way. It was driver error and I was going pretty fast when it happened.
I had the outdrive come loose on the rear once, but I put locktite on it and no problems since. |

Thanks for the positive input.

New lid, SHIFT for 6T. I want a 6T badly, but until I get one I'll keep tinkering with this bad mamba jamba :mdr:
old, stock body- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1800.jpg SHIFT http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/HPIM1882.jpg Gotta put the decals and stuff on, but it looks pretty good to me. Nice and simply, lovin the white scheme. |
I put 7K in front and 5K in the rear yesterday. Went on to win the electric 1/8 tonight, was very consistent and very fast all over. I really like racing on this big track, it's too bad I'm just visiting here though!
Track- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...G0016small.jpg |
Very cool - nice track too. Where is that anyway?
I really like the low CG you've accomplished with the two lower profile packs. Have you weighed your setup yet? If so, what does it come in at? The only thing I might recommend from what I've seen is to counter sink the holes on the bottom of the chassis rather than using the button heads. You've probably already done this though. By the way, are you the same GTXracer that was from Idaho? If so great to see you pull off this great build. Too bad we never got to dice it up at the Boise track :mdr: |
That's at RCHQ in San Antonio, Texas. I weighed the truck once, I believe it was around 9lbs. I've already countersunk those holes and added the appropriate screws ;) It's nice and smooth now. :mdr:
I'm the same guy, I was stationed there but now I'm up here in OlyWA. Boise track is TINY! I liked mountain biking there though. |
Looks nice w/the 6 body on it
I keep bugging Mike to hopefully make me a chassis for the 5T that would bring it to the same specs as the 6T w/out having to buy a whole new kit! He said it would be a 5.5T:yes: I also mentioned that if he made a few that they would probably sell quickly as quite a few of us have the 5T. |
