I want to burn a lipo, Tips ?

So I have this 3s 5ah lipo I threw in the garden a few months ago. I paid my kid to weed it out and clean it up for the coming fall. He found it, still puffed like I left it. I shot it with my airsoft c02 gun 50 times and nothing, I didnt pierce it. I really want to make it die. Can I just stab it with a knife and run ? Im a bit scared to do that though. Any recommendations?

The picture doesnt do the true amazing fat puffiness of it justice. This is 1 pile of turd lipo

Byte 09.03.2009 04:25 PM

Make a fire, threw it in?

suicideneil 09.03.2009 04:26 PM

Thermite + magnezium ribbon fuse. Place on top the lipo- light the fuse, run away, film the resulting fireball :D

jayjay283 09.03.2009 04:30 PM

you know I think I have some magnesium ribbon, not so sure about the thermite, I have a metal "fire pit", lol now were getting somewhere

Byte 09.03.2009 04:45 PM

PLEASE make a vid of it

whitrzac 09.03.2009 04:47 PM

stabing it with a knife isn't going to do anythign(been there done that)

get a few bottle rockets(the big ones) and see how high it will go before it burns up:lol:

J57ltr 09.03.2009 04:48 PM

Thermite is a mixture of rust and aluminum powder, and it's spectacular! You don't have anything more powerful than an airsoft gun? .22, BB gun, .357 Magnum? Hang it from a tree and fire away, or just drive a nail in it.... attached to a long stick.

jayjay283 09.03.2009 04:54 PM

I got the camera all ready, it can vid for a few minutes. Im just scared to do it, if I throw it in the fire will it explode or just vent. Ive seen the Utubes where they vent but you've seen my luck 15 stitches in the last year alone. I'm thinking put a steak knife with some weight onto a broom handle for a little time to run, or making a fire in the fire pit and just throwing it in and hoping to god it doesnt explode and cover me in molten plastic

Finnster 09.03.2009 05:14 PM

lol :)

shaunjohnson 09.03.2009 05:29 PM

i use the wood heater...they seem to go better if they are under a load.

redshift 09.03.2009 05:44 PM

lol the garden.... were you hoping it might sprout better lipos?

I say give it a full charge and cut it right in half with an ax.

It is a Maxcramps, so prolly not much energy potential... chances are it'll be a dud.

jayjay283 09.03.2009 06:40 PM

I wish J57 a fake bb gun is all thats safe in this house. I made a fire though, its getting there, just chucked in the big logs, maybe an hour im throwing that puppy in there. Fresh 2gb chip in the camera, lets see what this crapamps does. Didnt do much alive so I doubt its going to yell out during death, but if somethings going to go wrong it will be with me

lmao if it does it'll be like "screw this accursed life"

"If there's any justice in this world I will reincarnate a Hyperion!"

Poor thing, blame it on bad genes.

aqwut 09.03.2009 07:19 PM

If you want it to die, just hook it up your RC Car to it... LOL.. sorry, I had to say that...

Rivermaxx 09.03.2009 07:21 PM

Send it to me I will shoot it with a real gun. .50 bmg should about do it @ 1000 yards.

Now I got an idea! Take some kind of rope, and tie the rope and LiPo together. And at the end of the rope you have to hook it up onto some rc-car you got. 5 meter rope should do it. THEN! Drive with fullspeed towards a wall (A minimum of 50mph!) and the just before you hit the wall turn right or left so the LiPo flies at 50+ mph against the wall. Repeat this a few times and after some minutes you will have an RC-car with a little fire behind it

zeropointbug 09.03.2009 07:34 PM

Hook it up to two 12v car batteries in series for 24V?

That's 8v/cell!!!!! :mdr::yes::lol:

I am sure that I would ignite after that. Lipo's don't really ignite from puncture so much, it's more from being over active, be it sucking too many amps from it, or being overcharged. (more than 4.2v/cell)

Rivermaxx 09.03.2009 07:39 PM

I am going to start a lipo company and call my lipos C-4 with a big label on the pack LOL .Think they will sell. Add will say best bang for the buck. LOL

LOL, this one really made me laugh  Especially the "best bang for the buck"

PBO 09.03.2009 08:13 PM

Nail gun...the projectile needs to short the cells. Shooting doesn't do much other than make it smolder

Otherwise, build a fire

In a week or so, I'll be videoing a few batts meeting their end in a fire. Might shoot one just to demonstrate also but if you search for shooting lipos, RC-M will deliver!!

redshift 09.03.2009 08:30 PM

Been awhile.... should we be concerned?

JJ do I hear sirens?

We wanna see it catch on fire, not go into thin air..

asheck 09.03.2009 08:57 PM

I accidently pierced one. It sure caught on fire. But don't be scared , it's not a rocket, more like a colorful, really expensive cone.

Rivermaxx 09.03.2009 09:01 PM

I just wanted a reason to shoot the gun, screw the lipo lol. Wouldn't want to waste the $5 bullet on a $ 0.25 paper target. A overpriced maxcramps lipo will do just fine hehe.

rawfuls 09.03.2009 09:12 PM

:lol::rofl:

You can call it the M112

scarletboa 09.03.2009 09:54 PM

i like the car battery idea the best. car batteries can discharge at over 750amps easy and i think a good extreme rapid charge would do that pack some justice.

E-Revonut 09.03.2009 10:44 PM

Best way I know of to kill a pack is to start with it relatively charged, a dead battery doesn't have any energy to expend, and dead short the battery and get away!!! If you still have a battery connector on it use the matching connector and just use a small piece of wire to connect the two posts. Plug it in and run! Did this with a almost dead 6s 2200mah pack from a heli, lots of smoke and a little fire. I really wish the guy would have let me take it though as there where 5 good cells still.

Yep, dead short it! Be careful!

jayjay283 09.03.2009 10:49 PM

Nothing happened, no pretty colors nothing. Just burned up like a plastic toy.

new slogan = maxamps suck when you buy them, suck when you burn them

I videoed it may not have gone through yet, not that its any good, I sound really nasaly lol I wonder if thats how I sound to other people

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzZ7zEf7DHA

I have another one in the garden somewhere same lipo, ill short that one when I dig it up

E-Revonut 09.03.2009 10:52 PM

before you short it check it with a voltmeter and if it's farely dead put some charge back into it first, but be careful and watch it while you do that too

Tempted 09.03.2009 11:20 PM

I used a jumper one time to direct short a Venom 3s pack. All it did was hiss and then melt the solder joint on the jumper. No flames, no smoke, no nothing. I almost cried.

jayjay283 09.03.2009 11:28 PM

thats just lame, all this fear they put in us about lipos and you can't hurt yourself with them if you try

redshift 09.03.2009 11:30 PM

Another myth disspelled. Love the brief commentary tho. Maybe if we could get all the RCM members to donate some 'fuel' we could have a medium-sized bonfire.

Nice try JJ.

rawfuls 09.03.2009 11:32 PM

Aww, I'm bummmed, I was hoping to see a nice big fireball when I came back from Orientation :(

What if we put a constant, say, 20V into a 7.4V battery, wouldn't that make some fun?

E-Revonut 09.03.2009 11:58 PM

yes, yes it would!!!

rawfuls 09.04.2009 12:15 AM

We have a goal!

zeropointbug 09.04.2009 01:42 AM

That would be GREEEAAAT!

I think if you do a slow over charge to warm all the internals nice to cause thermal runaway, that should do it!

lincpimp 09.04.2009 02:01 AM

HA, I like to take a spare car battery and some jumper cables and hook it up to a already puffed cell. Did this a few times, the cell puffed to about 10 times its normal thickness then popped and produced quite a bit of smoke. No fire though. I have also driven nails in them, cut them in half with a machette and crushed them under car tires and in a bench vise. I have dead lipos sitting around and have never had an issue. I did get one pretty warm once, left my m8 tx on all night and the next morning the pack was quite warm, lucky I did not melt the radio!!!

jayjay283 09.04.2009 04:03 PM

I pulled it out of the fire with pliers (still smoldering)

I feel I gave that turd battery back the suffering it gave me
