Redcat Rampage MT Brushless Conversion.

Hello, finally had a chance to pick up my newly used rampage MT today.

The Plan...
Motor: Lehner 3080-8 (approximately 750KV)..
ESC: Schulze 40.300WK and/or Castle SHV 240
Batteries: 12S 5000mAh 25C PolyQuest (Maybe some 35C Hyperions  in the near future)

Here's a comparison shot of the Rampage vs a Revo... The wheels on that thing just makes it look huge. But this sucker is much heavier than a Firehammer or a Baja 5B..
http://www.geocities.com/aqwut/RCM/R...T/RMT_SIZE.JPG

And the conversion begins... it won't be anything super amazing or or precise... I'll do the best I can with a bandsaw, drill press and files.

http://www.geocities.com/aqwut/RCM/R...RMT_CONV01.JPG

This is how I would like the motor to sit... This way, I would be able to use stock gearing... I'll have to figure a way on how to mount this motor in this position.. I already have an idea in mind....

http://www.geocities.com/aqwut/RCM/R...RMT_CONV02.JPG

I'll keep posting updates of the progress.... I'm hoping to finish this within a week... I just need someone to make me a sleeve.. that's all, I'll see if a buddy a work could do this...

What's_nitro? 09.13.2009 11:40 PM

Man, I hope that thing has some strong diffs. If so, I foresee a split drive cup in your future... :oh:

*edit* That sounds wrong... I don't mean I want you to split a drive cup, just that they're probably the next weakest link.

BL_RV0 09.13.2009 11:40 PM

Awesome...! Seems like the stock gearing would be too high of a ratio though.

aqwut 09.14.2009 12:06 AM

I'm not sure of the gear ratio...
I think the Diffs are 3:1, the Center Diff is 3:1... and with the 25T pinion/36T Spur.. 25T Transfer gear to the 24T center gear shaft...

I think it's a 12.44:1 Final Drive Ratio... So this is geared for about 60MPH..

Ryu James 09.14.2009 12:17 AM

good job aqwut. i havent been able to work on mine for the last couple weeks. i really dont have a lot left to do. just a lot of little stuff. hoping to get some done this week. keep us posted on how yours is coming along. cant wait to see how it does with the lehner.

Hurry and get yours done... I'll race ya to see who finishes first.....:mdr:
What other little stuff do you have to do?..

lutach 09.14.2009 10:32 AM

Subscribed . This will be another great large scale addition to the ones already found here.

aqwut 09.14.2009 12:32 PM

went to pick up a plate of 1/4" aluminum today, 7" x 24".. not 6061 like I wanted, but will do for now...
http://www.geocities.com/aqwut/RCM/R...RMT_CONV03.JPG

Plan is to cut a peice that will fit inbetween the stock mount and the Brushless motor.. I will post pictures when I'm done.. I should have this done by todays end...

aqwut 09.14.2009 08:14 PM

Now I had to cut the sheet to size that I needed, I made it a little bit bigger because you can always cut some off later... Made the mounting holes for the 3080 motor, and made sure everything was centered...

http://www.geocities.com/aqwut/RCM/R...RMT_CONV07.JPG
http://www.geocities.com/aqwut/RCM/R...RMT_CONV08.JPG

Now I had to make cut down the original sleeves to bolt the aluminum motor mount onto the stock Motor Mount...
http://www.geocities.com/aqwut/RCM/R...MT_CONV08A.JPG

The hard part is pretty much done.. All I have to do now is mount the motor and wait for the sleeve to come in... I had to cut the original clutch bell, because the sleeve/collet will all attach the 10mm LMT 3080 Shaft to the cut shaft from the bell shaft... Hard for me to explain.. here's what I did..

Arct1k 09.14.2009 09:31 PM

Beefy! :)

big greg 09.14.2009 09:33 PM

that motor is massive!

scarletboa 09.14.2009 10:07 PM

i expected that motor to be big, but that's just massive! you could power a bicycle to 80mph with that thing!

aqwut 09.14.2009 10:19 PM

well, you need a big motor for a big truck right... :)

nitrostarter 09.14.2009 10:26 PM

Boy that a man motor!

A RC Dude 09.14.2009 10:27 PM

I didn't even know that had a brushless RC motor that big! My goh! Need to put something like that in a......actually, i have no clue what....moped maybe? that would be fun! lol

scarletboa 09.14.2009 10:32 PM

well, i was a little concerned when i heard you say it was geared for ~60mph. now, i'm a little concerned it's gonna be undergeared. i'm kinda curious to see how bad those tires will balloon.

I just hope the diffs hold up long enough for the tires to even have a chance to balloon.. :surprised: I have a whole bunch of gears that came with it as well... I think the differential is 3:1, the Center Diff is 3:1.. Pinion is 25, Spur is 36.. and transfer from 24T to 25T on the center diff... I'm not sure how to figure that out.. I'm guessing my FDR is around 12.44... Some one please correct me, or help me figure out the FDR.. I'm going to try BrianGs Speedy thing...

BL_RV0 09.14.2009 11:07 PM

Awesome project!!! Your motor mount is nice and beefy, just like the motor. Can't wait to see videos of this thing...!!!

looks like around 13.5 to me...
i would drop to a minimum fdr of 18:1, and also lower the motor voltage to limit rpms...

60mph for a truck this large will only create broken parts imo...

I think you are correct, but I have to make a good video right?...:intello:

KaztheMinotaur 09.15.2009 12:29 PM

How are you connecting the cut off clutchbell stem to the motor shaft.

I haven't worked on mine for a while either...been working a lot of OT lately...always nice to get a pay check that is $600 bigger than normal.

Nard Cox 09.15.2009 01:02 PM

*subscribed* That thing looks sick :intello:

Goodluck with the build.

I know what you mean about OT.. I work 55 hours every week.. straight pay... but that's extra RC money ... I'm connecting the cut off clutchbell shaft to the Brushless motor shaft with a Coupler... I want everything to look stock as possible, that way I have lots of play with the Gearing...

Coupler dimensions..

18mm wide x 22mm long

End A: 9.05mm wide x 8.0mm deep
End B: 10.05mm wide x 14mm deep

Each shaft will be held together by 2 set screws, 90 Degrees from each other... so 4 set screws total.. it will hold up without any problems.. I probably only need 1 set screw.. but rather be safe than sorry... Once it get's here I might have to shorten the coupler so it will fit in between the bearings...

aqwut 09.16.2009 11:35 PM

Sample Video

Finished the rear mounts for the motor...

All that's left to be done is figuring a way to mount the batteries, get new steering servo and cutting excess aluminum from the front mounts..

http://www.geocities.com/aqwut/RCM/R...RMT_CONV13.JPG

And this is the Coupler thingy...

All I can say is that this thing is phenomenal. Great job.

virusss 09.17.2009 03:53 AM

Excellent work congratulations, I wanted to know how you felt about
protect the engine from dust, it has a
fan that sucks in air.
I have the same problem on my baja with a NEU 2215 and
I do not know how to fix it.

KaztheMinotaur 09.17.2009 06:37 AM

Check the space between the center ring and pinion. I had to shim mine.

Yeah, you are not going to have many battery mounting options that way.

As you can see in the rear of the motor can is the intake. I will put a piece of foam or some kind of filter around that whole area. I'm actually leaning towards covering the whole motor(mount and all) in some kind of filter cloth/material. but for sure the rear will have a filter and the front sides of the motor will be shielded as well...

Hey, thanks.. I will shim it for sure.. I'll have to figure something out for the battery mounting... Right now, I I'm thinking of mounting the battery on an angle in the rear. But I'll have to play with it, because I want it as balanced as possible for the jumps.

Ryu James 09.17.2009 04:49 PM

looking great aqwut. i really like how you mounted the motor. that turned out well.

Thanks man.. after spending so much money on Batteries, Motor and ESC.. Something had to be done that could save me some money... I tried to keep it stock as possible...

cornolio 09.17.2009 07:22 PM

great job!!

now i want a new truck!when will this ever end?

aqwut 09.17.2009 11:19 PM

Had some time today to work on a new steering servo mount, the one that was on there couldn't fit my Hitec 805BB... not that the 805BB is the greatest servo.. I just happen to have 2 of them laying around..

big greg 09.17.2009 11:47 PM

looks pretty good, but those tires dont look to be doing 60 mph?

The Cow 09.17.2009 11:50 PM

Thats what I call a BIG conversion :great: Brian said it well.... "Beefy"

The chassis mods look great, Its all in the little details!

Great looking rig

Not yet, I don't feel like pulling the SHV 240 from the boat, it's a Pain in the butt.. so I have the motor KV set for 356 right now.. for 60mph + it will be set to 675KV... But that will be another video :intello:

It was a fairly easy conversion, but it's not quite finish yet...

Yeah, it's lot's of fun.. I love pulling my neice and nephews around with them.... You really have to get yourself one, it's not that expensive.... you could pick up a used for decent price..

Great Idea, I should start building a plow for it.. the 3rd channel will control the lift for the plow...
