Gearing help
What pinion should I run with the tekin RX8 and 2050kv buggy motor? I am running a 48t spur on a losi 8ight,running 4s. Right now I am running a 16t pinion and the motor is getting waay to hot (185F):surprised:. Am I under or over geared?
What pinoin should I run? I cant change Motor timing because I don't have the hotwire. |
You're a bit tall for a 2050. Try the 15.
Use this to calculate your max top speed and will help determin proper gearing.

Well it probably is the timing that is the problem, but try lower gearing first. Even a 14 tooth w/ the 1900 is still as fast as the nitros and a 2050 will be even faster. A note on timing... Using 0 timing with my 1900, I can use ANY size pinion gear up to a 20t in my 8ight and temps will always be less than 140 at the end of the run on 4s lipo.

ran 4s 15t pinion for 7 mins with holes in body and 185F, Ran 17t pinion for 7 min and temp was 190F. Timing is zero

no binding, mesh is fine!

That motor is awesome in the Losi 8ight buggy, if you replace the buggy 40/13 ring and pinions with the truggy 43/10 gearing. The 40/13 just makes the gearing to tall, imo. This is from experience, on a TRACK in RACING conditions.
Driving style could be the issue. Are you sliding around in loose dirt, powering through grass, or never letting the throttle trigger breathe? And to make sure, you aren't running a big heavy monster 8000mah+ lipo are you?
no, I am driving the buggy easy around a track. I am running 2 4s 3000mah 30c packs in parallel. I ran that with the MMM 2200 combo for 45 mins continuous with no problem, and now I cant run it with the tekin for 7 mins without overheating!
What are you running in your center diff for fluid? I had been running straight 10k and temps where a touch higher than I liked, I changed the fluid and put a little bit of 50k in with the 10k and my temps are about 10* cooler. Although I didn't think I was unloading the front a lot apparentlly it was enough to raise the motor temps.
If the MMM combo worked fine, why switch?
because the mmm burned up. I am running 15k in the center

2200kv motor at best would see 20 minutes on a buggy I bet at least. The temps say you're geared a bit tall. Do you have a hotwire? |
yep, I have a hotwire, and the 45 mins I speak of was running back to back. even doing that temps were under 150, but now with the tekin, I cant go 7 mins without it overheating!
what is strange is that I have a buddy running the same setup, same system in his buggy, we run on the same track, but he is geared 45/15, and I am geared 48/17. He does not run the fan and his temps after a 15min main are ESC160F Motor 145F. If I don't run the fan, my temps for the main were ESC 201F, Motor 198F. He also drives harder than I do. Something has to be wrong. Is my gearing that much different? He is running identical hotwire settings as well.
I have tried 15/48, 16/48, as well as 17/48, and temps were virtually identical to what I am getting now at 17/48. What gearing should I try next? at 15/48 the buggy was about the same as nitros speed wise (too slow), but ESC dropped to 185F after 15 mins, motor stayed the same as when running 17/48. I am running the proper mesh, there is no binding, and my buggy is only slightly heavier than my buddies. PLEASE HELP! I am regretting the switch to tekin! |
Something isn't the same. There has to be something you're overlooking.
What is your timing advance set to? How much heavier is your car, that could be HUGE. Go back to the 48/16 gearing as that is the same as his. However are you guys running the exact same car? 1/8 cars often have either 3.3 gearing internal or 4.3. If you guys have one of each your gearing is NOT EVEN CLOSE! |
He runs a losi 8ight 2.0, and mine is the 1.0
You guys might drive completely different than each other too. If his driving style is easier on the electronics this alone could be why he's cooler. Have him drive your car , see where the temps are.
If he's easier on brakes that is a huge factor. I often run cooler than a friend that has literally the EXACT same car down to the servo and I'm 20 degrees cooler than him. |
I did, and temps were identical
To his or yours? LOL
Are you using the same device to temp both cars? Are you using the same radios, servo's and batteries?
same temp gun (same actual gun, not just same model...), different radio, same batts.
maybe something is wrong with my motor? I have a CC blower on order. I hope it will cool stuff off a lil
I personally think the problem is with the loose nut behind the controller...
you don't have big/heavy tires on there, do you? That could do it. If it isn't that or binding, driving style is probably it. Try driving a little slower. Slower acceleration for sure should lower temps.
Btw brian, love your theory. |
lol, no heavy tires (Caliber on proline dish buggy wheels) Brian, you may be right!
