Getting the itch to buy something

Ok, racing is over with till spring:cry: My RC8T hasn't gotten much use since racing ended, the RC8T is a great racer but I just don't have much fun bashing with it. My crt.5 sits a lot too as it's bred more for a track as well and lacks the clearance and true 4x4 of a MT. Basically I'm looking to get another MT, not a REVO though. I want a true MT, one that looks and handles like one. I love the way the E-maxx looks and the price isn't bad for a new one, $325 from Tower w/ super saver code +free shipping and I can even split it up into 3 payments, comes with 2 7cell nimh packs as well. I have had an E-maxx before and know the ins and outs. Also looked at some new and used E-savages but for a NIB it will cost me the same as a E-Maxx and have no batteries. The Slash 4x4 would be great if it came with a Stampede body and tires. I'm not looking for a speed demon, 30MPH is all I need to be happy for this truck. I would most likely upgrade to brushless in the future but as I said I'm not looking for much speed, just a go anywhere truck and with winter right around the corner a waterproof E-maxx may be fun to have again. I have thought about a mini e-revo but they don't look like a real MT and are to small to really go anywhere. If anyone has any suggestions, anything they want to offer me for a good price or a trade for a CRT.5 would be good. Or someone to push me to get a new E-Maxx. I'm not the biggest traxxas fan but parts support is great and I can easily strap a MMM combo on it gear it for 35MPH or less and know I would have a pretty reliable truck with a couple RPM upgrades.

Please fellow RC-M members help me!

shaunjohnson 11.02.2009 01:34 AM

same here bro, have a revo setup for racing (center diff etc) so that isnt fun for bashing, i have a nitro buggy, but A) it's nitro and B) it's a buggy and not so good for bashing.

hence why i got a micro-T, it's indestructible and is great for parking lot fun with the lipo upgrade:mdr:

E-Revonut 11.02.2009 02:15 AM

I already have a RC18T, I love it for indoors and parking lots but I wanna go out and go over everything in my way!

hootie7159 11.02.2009 03:05 AM

i faced the same dilemma when i sold my rc8t....i loved the truggy...freaking awesome..but i loved my sc8 too much....but it too is also geared for the track....i'm gonna have to go with the slash 4x4 bc 1.)its completely water proof 2.)its brushless 3.)its 4wd 4.) has pretty decent clearance 5.)you can put stampede-sized MT tires on it to get more clearance 6.)you can find traxxas parts support...ANYWHERE.. :) 7.)i can finally try out my local 1/10th scale indoor track 8.)it looks pretty easy to wrench on 9.)im not a fan of the slash body but i can easily put an sc10 body on it 10.)it can go more places than a 1/18th or 1/12th scale RC

E-Revonut 11.02.2009 03:13 AM

The 4x4 Slash does look decent and wouldn't be hard to convert to a 4x4 Stampede but the downside is Tower has it listed for more than an E-Maxx. After seeing that I really started leaning more towards the maxx. Also I haven't and will not be selling my RC8T anytime soon, I am looking forward to racing with it again next spring

Slowkrawl 11.02.2009 09:42 AM

What about a crawler? That's usually what I tinker with in the winter.

tedo 11.02.2009 09:48 AM

I feel the same way as you. My 6T will now sit dormant over the winter until racing season starts up again in the spring. I was thinking of getting a Crawler or a Summit for some winter action. Still undecided. A Losi Comp Crawler would be amazing, however the Summit seems like an awesome winter rig too.

How about another truggy but with larger tires ? The easy to work on clean lay out and indestructability of truggy can match if not exceed pretty much any MT ?
I have a Lightning Stadium Pro2 thats a awesome basher and as much as I love my LST2's my LSP is a far superior basher.. It's lighter, handles better and easier to work on. My2cents

Arct1k 11.02.2009 10:53 AM

Crawler... Check out the crawler section for my latest builds

E-Revonut 11.02.2009 11:25 AM

I played with a buddies ax10, it was cool for about 5 minutes, I don't need a speed demon but I have no urge to go so slow either.

Chris- what did you wind up using to lock the center diff on the crt.5 you put tracks on last winter? I'm considering putting some silly putty in mine and throwing Stampede tires on it, if I don't like it then I could get a 4x4 slash and throw the tires on that

nitrostarter 11.02.2009 12:26 PM

Really look into a used Summit. Top speed is about 26mph but the added crawling ability and ground clearance with locking diffs and 2 speed tranny is really nice! They are quite fun to bash around, pull your kids in a wagon with, crawl over stuff, go swimming with.... I do suggest some Beadlock wheels with Losi claw MT tires for a great setup.

junkman 11.02.2009 12:50 PM

I too bought a summit for one of those in between, grab it off they shelf and go play moments. It is speedy enough I have actually left it brushed, using 4s, could stand a bit more grunt. I take mine down by the river every now and then crawl along the riprap. Its really fun when the river comes up enough to cover the parking lot with a few inches of water, thin layer of mud. BTW, I have my crt.5's center locked with silly putty, works great.

Arct1k 11.02.2009 01:29 PM

I used a cen diff locker - the cup is shorter on crt so took some modification... Nothing to clean out though...

E-Revonut 11.02.2009 04:54 PM

Choices, choices! What rims to use with some Masher 2000? Proline doesn't specify which rims are pin drive and which are hex drive and Tower doesn't either. Looking for some 2.2 truck rims with a hex drive

lincpimp 11.02.2009 05:35 PM

The "itch" huh??? Try Lotrimin Ultra. And stay away from those skanks.

Freezebyte 11.02.2009 06:19 PM

No help here, all my money will be going to computer upgrades and games during the winter time while the Flux sits collecting dust

stum 11.03.2009 12:58 PM

slash 4x4 comes stock brushless, not comparable directly to the emaxx.. emaxx's break way too easily and require hop ups just to be usable iMO. I say get some large tires on the slash 4x4, its pretty much water proof so it'll be fun all year and brushless to start. Way more durable than the emaxx, and that will set you up for a 4x4 sc class next year as well.. I'm getting the Ofna 4x4 10 pro SC.. so it should be a good time at CRC.

E-Revonut 11.08.2009 02:56 AM

If I can hold out it looks like it'll be a 4x4 slash but I may still wind up getting an E-Maxx as $325 to have a brand new basher isn't all that bad

coolhandcountry 11.08.2009 02:21 PM

I keep eyeing that summit.
It looks like would be a great truck for my usage.

Things to consider.
Do you want multi speed?
How big you want?

Rnemhrd 11.09.2009 11:22 PM

If you get an E Maxx I may have some things I might part with to toughen it up some. I have read you have some skills that might help me out.Let me know.

E-Revonut 11.10.2009 11:39 PM

The itch became raw so I gave in and ordered an E-Maxx. The 4x4 slash doesn't look to bad but if CRC has a 4x4 SC class and I decide I want one to race I'll order one in the spring. I don't know how well that setup would handle bigger tires, for that matter none of us really know as it's pretty much an all new design. My goal is going to be to make the E-maxx a "project basher" I want to keep it as stock as possible and only upgrade as and when needed. I know I will eventually replace the shock towers, arms, and bumpers with RPM pieces. It's going to stay brushed at least till spring and then I may try a mixture of old and new brushless power. I think a MMpro with a Novak HV motor might fit the bill for what I have in mind. As I'm not looking for mind blowing speed or all out wheelie action. I just want something I can drive over anything with and decent runtime to boot. I had an HV 4.5 setup un a G2R and it had plenty of power and speed but didn't have the massive torque of a 1515 sized motor, which should also help with reliability, the only downfall was the HV esc is junk and lacked programming and lipo lvc all of which would be taken care of by the MMpro which should be up to the task of moving a E-Maxx at 30MPH. As I said I will stay with the brushed motors and I'm going to run the Traxxas NiMh batteries for now and I even plan on gearing it down a little.

coolhandcountry 11.11.2009 10:10 AM

Hmm!
I am curiuos to how this MMpro will do with the HVmaxx motor.
I tried it on a nonsensored esc with out success.
I do like the neu 1512 2.5d on my max though.
It is great even at lower speed.

E-Revonut 11.11.2009 10:54 PM

I ran an HV 4.5 on a MM esc with sucess in a crt.5 geared for 40

E-Revonut 11.14.2009 12:41 AM

Well I ordered the E-maxx at about 10:30PM Tuesday night, it was on my door step by 11:00AM Friday morning using only the free standard shipping from Tower! That kind of service can only be duplicated by RC-Monster! Got it all unpacked but had to wait till after work to take it on it's maiden voyage. I charged the included 3000mah 8.4V nimh packs and threw 8AA batteries in the remote, that's right 100% stock! Speed is more than I hoped for and although it does have the power to wheelie it does lack a little of the oomph that I have become acustomed to. I might drop the gearing down a touch and the suspension needs to be stiffened a bit, otherwise it's all good!!!

coolhandcountry 11.14.2009 08:16 AM

Lower gearing seemed to help battery and motor life as well.
It may go slower but still fun.
I think I dropped back to16 or 17 tooth.
Sounds like you ready for some fun.

Consider these for your suspension, they work very well.

from experience buy aluminum bulks all the around i broke 4 sets of bulks ina week

E-Revonut 01.23.2010 01:33 AM

Time to update! I've been having a blast with my E-Maxx, I use it almost every day. That has brought up the weakest link....the stock motors are gone! I wound up coating my MMM with liquid electric tape to increase it's water resistance, so far it has proven to work great. I have had a Medusa 36-70-1600 sitting around for months, so that went in as well. I'm only running 4s so the motor isn't spinning up that fast and I have it geared pretty low as well, 68/20. Speeds are much better than I had anticipated and the ability to run lipo instead of just NiMh is great. Most of the time I am running on NiMh though as I get better runtime with them in the cold than I do with the lipos. I have done a few upgrades but only as needed for the most part. Broke a rear tower so I put RPM front and rear towers in, broke an A-arm and replaced the front arms with RPM versions, RPM skids and front bumper as well, and I snapped a rear turnbuckle so I bought the upgraded Traxxas ones since my LHS had them and I wanted to run that day! I also put a Spektrum rx in when I switched to brushless. All in all I'm still sticking to my plan and making a solid basher that's not out for blistering speeds.

sikeston34m 01.23.2010 01:49 AM

That's a good looking truck right there!

I love the Medusa Motors. A 36-70-2000kv is powering my E Revo now. The 70mm is pretty much an ideal size for the E maxx and E Revo IMO.

If you gear it up, it will really toss the truck around, or if you gear it down, it'll run all down long and you'll never have to worry about temps.

Liquid Electric Tape? Got some more info on that? A closeup of the ESC would be nice. Did it turn out ok?

While running my E Revo today, I ran off into a mudhole. It didn't hurt anything, but it always make me think the worst.

It's hard to wait until everything is perfect outside when you're wanting to run your truck.

rootar 01.23.2010 10:52 AM

FLM has i single motor setup that will put the motor down in the right side battery tray and drop the CG ALOT and then you can run one smaller and light single pack on the left side...... Thats exactly what i wanted to do with a new emaxx, keep it as plastic and as light as possible and have a good basher with "enough" power.....

to loose some rotating weight you can go with different tires, or knock a few lugs off of the stock ones....

I checked out that FLM motor mount, it's not a bad idea but since I have 3 sets of packs for this the way it is I'm gonna keep it the way it is, plus I like having the gear cover on there, keeps things looking clean. Not really trying to keep it plastic and light, just replacing things as they break with something that isn't likely to break and so far that has meant all RPM stuff. If I break a bulk head I will put aluminum ones in. As for the tires, rotating mass isn't a concern. Considering I'm geared for less than 30 and I have more than enough power available it's not gonna make a huge difference, also I bought this cause I wanted true MT looks and nothing says that better than chevrons, If I replace these it will most likely just be with a set of mashers.
