Step by step the last options arrive !!! (pics and lists)
I have started this thread on the Traxxas forum in May, 2008.
I wanted to share it with you, enlightened members of RC-Monster forum !! Here is the original thread : http://monster.traxxas.com/showthread.php?t=419028 And here are the latest pics I took today : http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060404B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060403B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060405B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060408B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060412B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060415B.jpg Face to face with my E-Revo : http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060393B.jpg And my vids : http://www.youtube.com/user/123456saucisse I will update this thread as I'm used to doing it on the Traxxas forum ! |
great to see you here, I follow your thread on traxxas forum. also your thread has influenced my e-maxx build and purchases. also love your vid's.
|
stock diffs? get some 1/8's in there.
|
Thanks Ron E  Do you have a build thread somewhere ?
_paralyzed_ : I use a 4s setup so the diffs hold out  I think I replaced them both only twice since I have bought my maxx. But sure, if I had been on 6s I would have used FLM hybrid bulks + 1/8' diffs  |
Nice Vids!!
I have replaced my diffs only once, FLM Hybrids rule:yipi: |
Don't tempt me ! :diablo::lol:

Just a Merry Christmas

I made an Excel file in which I listed all the parts needed to build this maxx (screw by screw, bearing by bearing, washer by washer...), where to buy them and how much they cost. PM me with your mail if you want it. I will post lots of pics of the 6s build tonight  It's time to test it now !! |
wow, looks great...
i'd like a copy of your build sheet. wouldn't mind some new vid's also... about to take a break with my 5th scales now and get back to my e-maxx's. I think a flm chassis might be next. love your truck, great build. |
Thanks Ron
These little maxxs are great :mdr: You can't go wrong with a FLM chassis ! I hope my file will help you. I will make a vid asap ! ________ "Some" build pics ! The first step was to anodize some parts in black to match my color theme. It's 1offRC (http://1offrc.com/) which did it, they made a great job and their service is excellent ! http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...AP1060664B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...BP1060819B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...AP1060660B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...BP1060814B.jpg The Monoblock didn't fit well the FLM 3905 chassis, I've had to dremel a bit the 4 bottom screws (chassis braces side) of the Mono and the rear notches of the chassis : http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060654B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060837B.jpg |
I needed a longer center rear dogbone, the UE "DogBone for Monoblock with the Thunder or Lightning Chassis" fits but it's a tad shorter IMO. The O'Donnell dogbone is longer but I use the UE one which seems stronger. I will test both though if needed.
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060729B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060888B.jpg I replaced the FLM drive cups with the Traxxas Drive Cups Inner Revo (5153R) which are longer. And I use HPI rubber O-rings to secure the dogbones. Second step was the assembly of the UE diffs. As I use the stock driveshafts (I will use the Summit ones if the stock ones don't hold out 6s), I needed to replace the UE output drive cups (on top of the pic) by Traxxas stub axles (I cut the threaded part) : http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060677B.jpg I use Ofna diff oil (7k front & 5k rear), Acer Racing bearings and Gorilla Snawt (for ring and pinion gears). And voilà ! : http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060826B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060833B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060871B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060878B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060890B.jpg It was really long to shim them, I hope I did it correctly  |
Some minor mods :
- IMEX Swamp Dawg tires vs Proline Mashers : http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060541B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060542B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060543B.jpg These tires are really more hard than the Masher ones, so hard that I couldn't turn them inside out to tape them ! We'll see if they hold out with my new 6s setup ! - I added protections (to flatten the bottom of my maxx and to hide the silver color of the ti skids) and chassis braces (to reinforce the chassis - I know it's pretty useless but I like the idea  ): Before http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060653B.jpg After http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060652B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060724B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1060886B.jpg |
The last parcel I received was the LiFePo4 packs.
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070063B.jpg I charged the packs, they were well balanced. I will use a 65/22 FGR for the 1st test. |
Now thats some nice custom pieces, never seen black UE parts like that before. You'll like the lifepo4 packs too, a pair of 3s will be roughly equal to 5s lipo, and thats what I run in the Gmaxx- plenty of power and good runtime.
|
Hi Pol,
nice to see you also in this forum:great: I miss some pics from your latest event:lol: Take care! |
You're right Udo, I forgot to post this :
I run my 6s maxx three times since I updated it. Result : a mix of bad luck and disappointment :whip: Bad luck : http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070137B.jpg First jump - first tree... http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070138B.jpg Paint peels off and some breaks... Maybe my front notches were too big I don't know. But given that the lexan is thick, it breaks rather than splitting. So I will never buy again this type of body ! I keep my stock bodies, easy to prepare, sturdier. I made that to reinforce them though : http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070140B.jpg (From my old 3906 bodies !) http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070141B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070145B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070146B.jpg |
Aaaaaarms...
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070134B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070136B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070135B.jpg I broke these arms during a bash session in a really bad spot with too much trees... But I often break lower front arms, so I ordered FLM alu arms (just for these ones). http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070150B.jpg These tires are great (good grip, design, no ballooning), just bad luck... It happened once with my Mashers. http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070148B.jpg Really huge jump :whip: It's the first time I break shocks like this :surprised: |
Disappointments :
The body, of course, but also the Monoblock ! I installed it because I thought the power of the 6s LiFe pack will be too much. But no, the power isn't so impressive. So I removed it, and it's funnier  Wheeliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiies ! The LiFe packs are great, fast charge, powerful, but they are a bit too heavy so my suspension suffers (front lower arms especially). I chose a 68/22 FGR finally, but I ordered smaller pinions to get more torque. I still love my maxx despite these breakages and bad investments But I'm really happy with my UE diff (Ofna in fact, only the cases are made by UE) + LiFe packs ! It's the most important finally ! We will see if my maxx is reliable on the long run ! (Lots of comments already posted in the original thread on Traxxas forum : http://monster.traxxas.com/showthrea...419028&page=22). |
So you actually broke RPM arms? It takes some serious bashing to do that!--Josh

Even still, you can bend an rpm arm back on itself and it just takes it,I've never had one snap--josh
|
Holy crap!
|
:surprised: I've never seen a broken RPM arm either. I've had to make a bushing to put in the arm to take up the slop before though. But that was due to age and running the truck for too long with hinge pins that looked like yours. One of the reason I don't run a Maxx anymore. Looking at yours makes me want to though!
|
OOh,I've had my T maxx bugger off at 45mph,hitting rocks and ant hills,it never broke an RPM though!
|
Mindless vandalism...
|
To be honest, I hadn't drove my maxx for a long time... Add to this a new 6s setup and bingo ! : unusual damages... :whip:
I often bash my maxx pretty hard to see if it's really sturdy & durable, but whatever the sturdiness of a build, if you are a reckless driver, you'll break something, I did it  And I did it remarkably :mdr: I ordered FLM lower front arms all the same because I often break RPM ones. I don't like alu arms but maybe it's the only solution. We'll see ! |
I received my FLM arms, they sent me 2 packs but I only paid one
http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070429B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070433B.jpg ^ This idea is great, and the eclips are inserted in the brace. http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070454B.jpg But big mistake for bashing use... There is no lower shock mount so the shock cups rub against Traxxas tubes if I want to have the same ground clearance as I had with my RPM arms (almost no friction with the stock turnbuckles but I had only one in stock...) . And the pins of driveshafts yokes rub against the arm so a dremel job is required (a tad, no big deal). http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070439B.jpg So I need to find a solution to fix that (if you have any idea I'm interested ). Yesterday I decided to test Integy (yes) arms I bought a long time ago for my 3906 E-Maxx. I used an older version of these arms which hold out great (I know it's odd for Integy parts, sometimes they are good). But after 10 minutes of bashing : http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070486B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070497B.jpg I hit a tree stump at full speed (vid next week)... :whip: |
A 6s E-Maxx combined with my driving style (brilliant or stupid, but always violent !) isn’t a good combination…
My maxx can’t endure the weight & the power of my new LiFe packs due to the suspension design a bit outdated for the powerful available BL systems and lipo setups. During a landing, all the weight of the maxx is transferred to the front lower arms, and they break, like the hinge pins. Better shocks could help but 6s + hard bashing is too much for an E-Maxx A solution would be to use a 4s setup but now it’s 6s or nothing ! So I keep my RPM arms, my LiFe packs, my almost-bulletproof E-Maxx, and I will be more kind with it next times… The next and last step of this build will be to buy Ofna shocks. I will soon be too busy with my new job (and the first one !) so if I want to keep running RC trucks I need one which is reliable. My ERBE is perfect from this point of view, I will use it with a 6s lipo setup soon :mdr: . My E-Maxx is and will always be my favorite MT but priorities change ! It was really funny to run it, break it and fix/upgrade it during these years  |
Does that mean you will be selling it, or retiring it to shelf-queen status?
With the FLM lower arms, I would have said making something like the Gorillamaxx lower a-arms should work, just a little alloy block that bolts in place on the a-arm, then has holes for the shock a bit higher up to replicate the stock design. Whats your new job? |
It means I keep it as it is right now (+ Ofna shocks) but I keep running it ! I don't want to store it after 5 years of mods & $$$ I just have to be more kind with it :mdr:
I saw in your first build thread the little alloy blocks, I asked FLM if they can make some, we'll see. I got a job of consultant in Paris, I give advice to SMEs concerning accountancy, finance matters, fiscal concerns, matter of law, human resources, marketing... The required skills are numerous and various but that's what I like. It's well paid and I found it quickly : 4 days ! :surprised:. I begin May 31st... Short vacations but I can't complain ! Now I can finance new RC projects haha  But it's time to work as well, and my job will be time-consuming :whip: |
Congrats on your new job!!!!
|
DAMNIT I just wrote a bunch of stuff about the lower FLM here then it deleted it all... Well here are some pics of what I made. Stock shock Blocks and 1/8 Shock installed too... Here is my ride...
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...v/100_4086.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...v/100_4073.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...v/100_4072.jpg front needs extra dremeling because of steering rods and needs to go inside. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...v/100_4074.jpg Traxxas CVDs wont rub the Arms & RC8 Shocks work way better without mods but I made some blocks anyway for extra ground clearance. http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...v/100_4084.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...v/100_4083.jpg http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...v/100_4082.jpg |
Personally, I think you should go with the strongest bashing suspension made, the UE EXT Suspension...you won't break those! Also, you need to be running either UE Supershocks or their Ofna counterparts (Like Ofna Ravager Rear Shocks).
And the best part, I have both, and they are yours if you want them! |
Thanks George16
I thought about this solution ZippyBasher. I asked FLM if they can make these blocks, here is Jamie's answer : "We originally had something like that when we first machined these. To keep cost low we eliminated them. We could offer this part in addition to the arms. But it would be an additional part.". I asked him if some of these blocks were lying around and if he wanted to give them :mdr:. If not, I keep my RPM arms and maybe one day I would be motivated to make these bloks myself (I need better tools and a nice work station !!). I love the look of your maxx by te way, really custom ! Thanks a lot Chadworkz for the offer but I don't want to use collector parts in my maxx, I need parts which can be replaced easily  And I've already ordered UE shocks :yipi: |
I hear ya, but let me know if you change your mind. I have enough parts to build another full-blown Thunder/EXT based nitro Supermaxx, so I may just do that like I have planned...I don't know. All I need is an engine, and I think I will go with the LRP ZR.30 X Competition with a Roto-Start Backplate.

Final steps !!
The last upgrades are finally here !!
UE shock towers, Supershocks and spare parts : http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070776B.jpg Plastixs ejector pins : http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070821B.jpg FLM vs UE shock towers : http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070792B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070791B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070788B.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070790B.jpg Thinner, lighter (30g vs 50g), stronger (7075-T6 vs 6061-T6), UE shock towers are supposed to be better ! Body posts and shock standoffs are included : http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070780B.jpg The standoffs are perfect for the stock or Big Bore shocks but for the Supershocks you need the standoffs included with.... the Supershocks, logical... http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x.../P1070798B.jpg |
