What should I go with???

I want to make my emaxx a bit more fun. I'm not looking to blow the doors off every nitro out there(just most), I just want some more power and longer run times. I don't want to spend a fortune either. What brushless esc and motor with what gearing should I go with? What kind of run time could I expect? Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forum, BigJ!

A few questions:
What are your upgrades so far?
How many $$ do you want to spend? You could get a decent BL for around 300.

If only the additional runtime is your goal, you could just run your Titians with some high capacity Lipos.

Welcome BigJ! If you want somthing nice, not tooo powerfull, id go for a Fiegao 9 or 10L, on 12 or 14 cells , if you get the 10L, you could even go 16 if you want. As for a controller a 9920 would be the best for what you want, and the cheapest!

What upgrades do you already have?

boss 302 03.02.2006 03:50 PM

welcome BigJ. I would say a 9xl and a 9920 for good runtimes but it all depends on how much money you want to spend and how many cells you are going to run.

coolhandcountry 03.02.2006 04:44 PM

What you have as upgrades would greatly influency my recommendation. What cell count you have or plan on running to. What chassis do you have now? cvds steel idlers anything?

WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!!!

Welcome BigJ - as you can see by the replies to your first post - there are quite a bit of knowledgeable people on these forums that will definately point you in the right direction......Once again Welcome,....

BigJ 03.02.2006 05:41 PM

Man, thanks for all the replies, on most forums I'm luck to get one reply. The Maxx is stock, but perfect condition. I'm thinkin' the 9920 and 9L are the way for me to go. I'll probably run it on 12 - 16 cells. 33-3800s. What drivetrain upgrades will I need to do for the truck to handle that? Thanks again.

coolhandcountry 03.02.2006 06:44 PM

I would go with steel idlers for the trans. The stock sliders will need to be replaced with cvds for wheels and center. For 16 cells The 9L is going to get hot. I find the xl motors has less problem with this. The 8xl is a great motor. It would give you good torque and speed. Works well on 12 -16 cells to. It would take more if you choose.

Dafni 03.03.2006 02:26 AM

I would also suggest an XL!
7XL if you're after speed, 9XL if you are after runtime. 8XL for something in between.

I have 7XL and an 8XL, and run them on 14 cells. I would suggest the 8XL to you. Can't go wrong.

And yeah, Mikes steel idlers are a good insurance for your tranny.
Driveshafts, if you can afford, otherwise you'll be waiting for replacements in no time. (BL power is just too tempting to always ease into throttle)

ease into the throttle... Whats that mean ive certainly never done that

You will definately need cvds the stock ones wont last for much more than a run or two

Means one can drive it like it's not just an On/Off switch ;)

i have an 8L in my TXT-1 and it rips on 14.4v, but it does pull a lot of amps - definately always need a fan on the controller and motor.

i would like to try an 8XL, but i really like the higher rpm's of the 8L :027:

Justin, in this case, get a liwer wind XL. Maybe a 7XL. It rips on 14.4V!

joostin420 03.03.2006 08:36 AM

the thing is that the 7xl is still almost 800rpm/v lower than the 8L :002:

32458rpm @ 14.4v for the 7XL versus 43474rpm @ 14.4v for the 8L

Dafni 03.03.2006 08:41 AM

True, but you can gear it different.

There's still a 6XL, too. With 2501rpm/V under load.

maxxdude1234 03.03.2006 08:49 AM

joosten, you have to remember; power is the product of rpm and torque. More rpm = more power, and more torque = more power. The L series motors get their power from high rpm's and the XL motors get their power from torque. Both L and XL motors can be geared to give the same speed - but the main advantages of XL motors is they run cooler and have the potential for higher cell counts.

You said yourself, the 8L in your TXT needs a fan to keep it cool. If you ran an 8XL, you could gear up to get the same speed and you won't need a fan to keep temps down.

Basically, unless weight is a big issue, XL motors are always the better choice over L motors.

coolhandcountry 03.03.2006 09:14 AM

The torque of the xl motors passes the 8L. My brother used to run the 8L. He like the xl motors much better. You can gear them for more speed have more torque with less heat. I had a 7xl geared 22 66 with 18 cells on it. The 8L didn't stand a chance. It could have used a fan on it. It was fast and powerful.

BigJ 03.03.2006 05:37 PM

What kind of batteries are you guys running and what chargers are you using?

brijar 03.03.2006 05:38 PM

How does runtime compare between an L series and an XL series? I am running a 9L at 16/72 and have about a 20 minute run time for the first run of the day on my only set of 13 GP3300's, as well as good speed, but I haven't measured it yet. The motor does often get too hot to touch. Usually about 60 degrees Celcius, or about 140 degrees F. I would like at least the same speed that I have now, or about 40MPH and the same runtime. Which XL should I get and what gearing should I run with it? I may not get one due to being low on cash, but I can still plan:027:.
Also, how hot is too hot for a 9L motor? I really don't want to ruin it.

Thanx,
Brijar!!!

coolhandcountry 03.03.2006 05:53 PM

For batteries i run gp 3300 gp 3700 and ib 3800. I have from 6 cell packs to a 13 cell packs. 140 f is not bad on temp. It is warm but not to bad. Keep it as far under 180 as possible.
