Sand + brushless motors = BAD! Anybody have a motor for me?!?
 

Alright so im down in FL again with the 9920/9xl powered e-revo (I will try to do my best to get the vids hosted this time...although there are not as many good ones this time).

Anyway... I dont have a motor clamp (probably would have saved me in this case) but I had the wires that are coming out of the endbell electrical taped as well as taping the end so if the end popped it wouldnt get sand in it. Well apparently there was a bit of sand that crept inside during a double backflip attempt landing. This is my second (and last!) time of getting sand in the motor. It just dosnt spin hardly at all (locked rotor im assuming). I was considering trying to used compressed air to clean it out but I am assuming there is no way I can get it to perform properly. So now im hunting for a new motor. If anyone happens to have an extra motor (be it feigao or wanderer L or XL) I would be more than willing to help clear it from your parts box if you know what I mean! Worst case scenario ill just pickup another new one from mike. I think I might be selling the e-revo once I get another motor in it as I really do prefer the smaller 2wd 1/10 stadiums as I can make them SUPER lightweight.

Anyway if anyone has an extra motor or suggestions on cleaning and/or what motor to try next let me know! I only run on 14 cells and was thinking about either another 9xl or possibly an 8xl.

Take the motor apart and clean it! If the windings are still fine, it should be good. Worth a try anyway.

I hear you about the 1/10s. I always wanted an RC10, but never got around to buy one. But one thing's for sure, I will never get rid of the revo!

if i was you i would try cleaning the motor before i got a new one. its worth a try

I find that the lehner motors are more sealed than than the feigaos or wanderers. I think cleaning of the motor sounds like a good idea to try. Maybe your bearings are bad not the motor.

I have Flextec suspension for your revo, but no motor.

Use a CRC Quick Dry electronic cleaner. Spray the internal parts of the motor and also spray the bearings by using a bearing blaster from RPM. It is quite possible that the motor's bearings are damaged. How about a pair of ceramic bearings from BocaBearing or Acerracing? I once blew a bearing in a T4 with a 1930/5 motor. I replaced the whole set of stock bearings with the ceramics and I forgot about them.

on your berings I would not waste time with a rpm blaster, get the trinity giggler tub and it will get anything out of your bearings with some motor spray, lot eayser to use too

Alright thanks for the advice guys. I tried opening it up and just wiping it down but didnt do much. I noticed on the inside of the windings there is a whitish substance... Is this tiny particle of sand or is this a normal glue or other substance? I would assume the windings would normally just be bare copper (less resistance) but thought id mention it. I did try hooking it up last night after getting what I could out and it seemed a tiny bit better but still definitely not good. Before the rotor would hardly move at all and now it seems like maybe it moves about 90 degrees or so before it coggs/stops due to locked rotor. I will try some electronics spray once I get home.

I never had no white stuff in mine. It sounds like sand in it. It all must go.

I think I've seen a slight white-ish coating on the coils in my Feigao motor(s). As long as it is pretty smooth, it should be fine. It's probably just epoxy or something harmless.

I think you may have a bad bearing. Also look for any magnetic debri on the rotor.

For sealing use silicone around the motor wires. Sand can find it way in around taped wires. Tape over the rear bearing. Don't forget about the extra mounting holes. Those need to be sealed some how, tape or something.

I did have tape over the rear bearing and had grub screws loc-tited in the extra mounting holes. Its a live and learn situation I suppose! (although this is my second time with this happening lol) Sand is tricky stuff to try and keep out- it gets EVERYWHERE!

I will have to pick up some electronics spray and see if I can get it to work again.

Yeah, sand is all but impossible to keep out of your stuff. tape the bearings and extra motor holes, and silicone the rear where the windings exit the can. Snad is a very harsh environment.
For your motor...can you spin it by hand at all?

Yes it spins relatively freely (just a SLIGHT bit of binding) but then again I dont remeber how much friction there was from the rotor when I first got it.

So did you clean it out?

No I just got home today and couldnt find any electric cleaner and am out of motor spray or I would try that. Hopefully I can find something tomorrow.

Welcome to Florida, or sand country. I have never seen any other type of dirt here besides sand. It's everywhere you go and it makes your truck loose traction fast. But hope you get your motor running again.
