Fan Question
 

I've been on a bit of a break...haven't touched the rcs in over an month but i'm just now getting back in. I gave up on my RROD xbox 360 after a failed towel trick attempt and I got a new one for $90....i'm happy. I have a decent sized fan and I was wondering though, I don't want the RROD to happen again so would putting the fan on it help OR should I up a small PC fan on there to pull out the hot air. Blow in cool air or pull out hot air....whats your advice?

The newer 360's have smaller and cooler running CPU and GPU"s which require less power and thus put out less heat and are less likely to fail then the first gen "Xenon" models. Jasper is the newest with the smaller CPU and GPU dies along with reduced power

Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY a Nyko intercooler for your 360. Myself and many others have had our 360's ruined from that POS. Mine actually melted and fused to the power plug when it failed. Luckily I had a gamestop warranty to replace my 360 outright, but I was still really pissed.

Make sure the 360 has ample breathing room all around and doesn't sit in the sun and you won't need to give it an extra fan.

Wow, I was going to buy one of those but though hey I have a fan why not use that. I'd rather be safe than sorry....would blowing into the xbox be bad, as in pushing the hot air back into it?

Just identified that it was the old Xenon model. I still have it, I'll most likely sell it on ebay...or maybe take it apart one day to see what I can see. I have my xbox in an open aired area, not against a wall, no direct sunlight, and I do have an air purifier so I don't think dust will be a problem.

Make sure you put the fan blowing on the right side of the Xbox that doesnt' have the HDD, not the back or your gonna cancel out the exhaust fans and then you really will have an overheating problem.

In verticle position, the air flow intake holes on the bottom get restricted vs horizontal so less air is moved through the system.

I did it standing on some "stilts" so it could still get airflow underneath. I got about 30-40 minutes of good game play with my fan on it cooling it from the bottom. I came back about 4 hours later and I turn on the fan, turn on the xbox 360 and what do you know....frozen dashboard....just my luck. I'm reattempting the towel trick as we speak so cross your fingers i'll keep you updated

It does work, but not always and not forever.

The PCB board is already warped under the GPU and CPU due to the heat expansion over and over as you power cycle the 360 and due to Microsofts poor design. So no matter what, its gonna keep failing until the Ball solder joints on the CPU simply fail and the 360 dies permanently

It works for about 3 days then a towel trick in needed to be re done. It has mega heat problems so a fan is needed to be blow on it or else it will over heat in 9 minutes. It gets me by until my 90 xbox 360 comes in...bought it from rctech. I think i'll just send it back and get a new one while I play the new one that should arrive soon. Then just sell the new one that i get back from MS and make some $$ on my cheap score

Quick question guys...I have my gamer tag with a 3 month membership on my old xbox 360...I got the new 360 in the mail today...can i transfer the gamer tag and the live account to the new 360 from the old 360? I'll send the old on in, get a brand new one and make some $$$!!!

Yes, you just login with your account credentials and it will move over to the other 360.

Very nice! thanks for all th help. I will most likely keep the fan on this xbox also have have it horizontal on "stilts". The old one I have has the white disk cover thing....sorry i'm not sure of the name. but the new one has a chrome one....better or worse?

I think the white one is the Arcade version, and the Chrome is the regular version.
At least that's what I read one time.
Again, I don't own a 360.

White benzel covers were orginaly for the "core" systems when the 360 first launched in 2005 and the current "arcade". The "Pro" and every other system model beyond it has chrome benzel on the DVD drive.

Wow i'm happy, I paid that little for a newer arcade and i'll send in my old one and get a newer arcade(I hope) and sell it to make up for the one I bought and then some....i'm happy

Yes they are but its a newer version I believe after some research. Question, I went to hook up the new xbox 360 to see if it works and i went to plug in the power supply cord into the xbox and there seems to be a small plastic piece in the port in between the top set of prongs and the bottom set of prongs...right in the middle....is there a new plug I need to get or what do I do?

I believe one of the articles I read suggests that all plugs are backwards compatible, but not forward, which means if the one you have is the newer one, (the plug), it SHOULD be able to go into the (older) console, however if you have a plug that CANT go into a system, usually means that you'll need a new plug (and that the newer console) is newer than the one you had previously.

I really don't want to touch it. I was going to try and pop off the pin but I don't wanna screw it up and end up having to send two xbox's in. I got a ridiculously Irish accented lady on xbox support and it was useless. So I would just go to best buy, walmart, gamestop...ect and ask for what? The newer edition power supply cable?

I say bring your xbox in, and have them find the cable that fits it.
And bam.

They redesigned the plugs intentionally so people wouldn't mess up the using the older PSU's on the newer systems and vice versa. Otherwise, real good chance of frying your system completely. Leave it alone.

Hmmm, would I need a new power supply with it being a different xbox....this has the newer internals so would that mean more power needed meaning new power supply?

That would be the new cord....

The power cord from the outlet -> power supply is a regular computer cord.

but the power supply -> xbox is one full cord.
If that makes sense.
