I need some computer help.

My pc has been telling me for a month that my master hdd was on the fritz, Well to day, my pc finally took a shit. It's not coming back.....So does any one have a hdd I can have or buy?

and also since window xp is outdated now, does some one here have a windows xp media center edition key code I can use?

rawfuls 02.05.2010 03:47 PM

Fry's has been having a few really good sales on SATA drives, about 1.5TB for $70-80 is what I got mine for.

In fact here's a 500GB for $50, may not be the best deal, but I've always liked Seagate.

Modding: Does your computer have a SATA or IDE drive? It makes a difference.

Modding_out 02.05.2010 04:50 PM

It has IDE ribon cables, But I think it can handle sata....I have to check to see if it can. It's not worth it for me to buy a new hdd, It's and 'old' higher end pc and I just need some thing 60gb or more.

Thank fully i kept all my important stuff on my slave.....which is strange, cause it's out lived 2 master hdd's and has been used in 4pc's and yet still it's in tip top condition. go figure.

BrianG 02.05.2010 05:49 PM

That kinda makes sense as the slave drive sees much fewer read/write cycles than the master...

That I didn't know, but it still served time a master though. either way it's still pretty good.

How much are you wanting to spend on a new HDD. This is pretty much the best oneout for the price, quality, speed and storage space, I love mine. Seagates have been having serious quality issues including one of mine that took a crap for no reason last July. I'm back to Western Digital now

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136319

And no, im not giving you my media center key, go buy an OEM Windows 7 for a $100.

EDIT: Oops, that HDD above is sold out, the Blue version is almost as good. Not as fast and long warranty as the Black Cavier, but will do just fine

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136218

And the next time your HDD S.M.A.R.T system is telling you of a drive failure, do something about it before its to late. Thats why its there

That doesn't mean anything. Drives can fail at random times, even if they are the exact same drives in the exact same machine. The slave or master setting only tells the computer BIOS which drive is the primary boot drive that holds the O.S kernel to boot too. Both drives are still spinning at 7200rpm even if there is no data writing/scanning on the slave in comparison to the master unless there you enabled a power saving shut down feature. In any case, such is the tradeoff for magnetic storage media, there just not horrendously reliable after a few years of use. SSD's will be the future of data storage in the coming years.

I'm looking at it from a MTBF perspective. Yeah, they can fail sooner, but a drive that is used more has a higher chance of failing early.

SSD tech needs to improve before it becomes a long-term viable solution. The typical SSD memory module has a ~100k write life-cycle (per cell). That can somewhat be mitigated via wear leveling, but that has its own issues in certain applications. Anyway, for most people, this means at least a year or so of use, but definitely not good for systems that do a lot of writes. Also, SSD has a slower write than read speed. I'll take a conventional HDD for now until things improve.

I just want a used hard drive in good condition to slap in, and I have a bout 5 xp home and xp pro keys. I just want media center cause it the most up dated...it saves time..... I don't like vista or windows 7. Also my pc isn't worth paying for a new hdd or paying for the latest windows.

And I know what S.M.A.R.T is, I built the computer. I have every thing I wanted stored on my slave for this very reason. So their was no reason for me to any thing but wait for it to die.

Modding_out 02.06.2010 02:37 PM

I find it very hard to believe that will all the computer gurus on here, that no one has a hard drive they can sell me......

rawfuls 02.06.2010 02:39 PM

I have a few... but they're not 100% stable, I've used them, and I like em, but I wouldn't feel comfortable selling them incase they crash early, I get the blame.
Though, if you really insist, I have a few 40 and 80GBs, the 40's are SATA, and a few 80's are PATA

LMK on the 80 gb That's what have in their now.

If you would be so kind as to hook the drive up as a slave and check it's smart data I'd be much appreciated.

use the program> it's gives extremely in depth analysis of all drives on your pc as well as you can play with your fans lol it's free also:yes:. http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

rawfuls 02.06.2010 03:47 PM

Will do when I get some time, in the meantime, did you get my PM?

yea, just a few min ago(didn't see it before), I got to run. I'll pm you later:yes:

rawfuls 02.06.2010 03:53 PM

Okay, cool

Modding_out 02.13.2010 09:16 PM

YA'LL not going to believe this.......I was just tool'in around with my desk top....I pulled out the hdd and shook it pulled it close to my face whispered some thing to it and gave it a good bitch slap.... then suddenly it started working again....WTF? haha, I was just goff'in around since rawfuls was taking is dandy old time:whistle: I guess the motor seized in it or some thing....Oh well, I thought you guys might want to know that strange bit of circumstance. Still need a new HDD Rawfuls....:whip:

Modding_out 02.13.2010 09:26 PM

This gets even more confusing.......This is the smart data test from speed fan, This hdd epicly failed this test a week or two before it crashed....Now it's "fixed" it self (I know not really) and It's stats are back up to were they were a year 1 1/2 ago  Any one have an idea whats going on here?

Almost every EIDE or SATA hard disk includes S.M.A.R.T. data. That information is collected by the drive itself and contains data that the manufacturer considered relevant to check reliability. The data is made up of several attributes that have a current value, a worst one, a threshold, some raw data, and some flags. Basically, when any attribute's current value is below its threshold, the hard disk is considered unreliable and likely to fail. By using several techniques, this report tries to give a wider range of info, basing its analysis on advanced comparisons with normal values based on real hard disks and on expert-like checks. The final results are not to be taken as an absolute truth, but they are a very good approach to what a professional would say about your hard disk status.
Your hard disk is a SAMSUNG SP0802N with firmware TK200-04.
The average temperature for this hard disk is 33C (MIN=17C MAX=45C) and yours is 26C.
Your hard disk's S.M.A.R.T. attributes are now being analyzed and a full report about the reliability, health and status of your hard disk is generated:
Your hard disk is not below any attribute threshold. This is good.

Warning: Spin Up Time reached, in the past, its threshold. Worst value is 1 and threshold is 25.
This is an unusual situation because it looks like your hard disk, in the past, failed the S.M.A.R.T. status check, but now it appears not to be failing.
You should double check it. A backup of your data is strongly suggested.
Your hard disk is now being compared to real data used to define normal values for your specific hard disk model. This way, the analysis can automatically use proper operating ranges. The images give you an idea of how each attribute is within such range. Current and raw values are shown for easier reference for experienced users. There are 2684 hard disk models in the current archive.

Attribute Current Raw Overall
10 Raw Read Error Rate 100 0 Very good
10 Spin Up Time 100 4416 Very good
0 Start/Stop Count 94 6131 Watch
Warning: Start/Stop Count is below the average limits (98-100).
10 Reallocated Sector Count 99 4 Very good
10 Seek Error Rate 100 0 Very good
10 Seek Time Performance 100 0 Very good
1 Power On Hours Count 99 1196507 Normal
10 Spin Retry Count 100 69 Very good
10 Calibration Retry Count 100 0 Very good
0 Power Cycle Count 97 3280 Watch
Warning: Power Cycle Count is below the average limits (99-100).
10 Hardware ECC Recovered 100 218794 Very good
10 Reallocated Event Count 99 4 Very good
10 Current Pending Sector 100 0 Very good
10 Offline Uncorrectable Sector Count 100 1 Very good
10 Ultra DMA CRC Error Rate 200 0 Very good
10 Write Error Rate 100 0 Very good
10 Soft Read Error Rate 100 0 Very good

NOTE: not all warnings are reflected on fitness and performance overall values as relevancy is based upon the settings from the hard disk manufacturer who is the best entity deputed to define such relationships.

NOTE : your hard disk has 1 offline uncorrectable sectors. Those are sectors that an offline scanning found as unreadable. Offline scanning is a process that can be automatically started by the hard disk logic when a long enough idle period is detected or that can be forced by some tool. Those unreadable sectors are identified and the hard disk logic is waiting for a write command that will overwrite them to try to remap them to spare sectors (if available). According to the Reallocated Sector Count attribute, your hard disk seems to have available spare sectors. A simple disk surface scan won't be enough to force the remap operation. You need a read/write surface scan to remap the sector. The best option should be a tool that knows about what should be read from that sector so that it has some option to apply the best fix to the missing data.

NOTE : your hard disk Power Cycle Count attribute current value (97) is below the normal range (99 - 100) reported for your specific hard disk model. Basically your hard disk was power cycled more times than the maximum number the average hard disk was. Power cycles put some stress on the hard disk mechanic. Sometimes power cycles can be caused by a loose hard disk power connector. Make sure it is properly fastened.

The overall fitness for this drive is 97%.
The overall performance for this drive is 100%.
The link to get back and see a new report about this hard disk in the future is this. Consider that new hard disks and new checks are added over time.

Oh you shush.

I'll pull out the hard drives and see what I have in my "inventory".

For now, PMs! :D
