I bought an eight

Hi, I bought a used eight to restore, and electrify. I will post pictures of my progress in this thread.

Here is the picture the seller posted:

We have similar taste in buggies. First the Caster Fusion now an 8ight 1.0. Looks like we have some things in common.

Amain had the medusa, novak, version of the tekno kit on sale for 65 or 70 bucks that was where I started. Not bad for a completely new chassis of better aluminum and extras.

el tomaso 02.17.2010 07:24 AM

Thanks for the tip, I was going to order the tekno kit for 130 from impakt!

I ordered the tekno conversion for medusa/novak motors from amain, a medusa 36-60 1300kv and a MMP from mikey.

I can't wait:yes:

Yes the 8ight 1.0 tekno kit from amainhobbies is 69.99 (real bargin) with a 36mm motor bracket, even less if you have a coupon! It's a great setup, you will love it. Amain also had one of those square Lektron motors on deal for 99.00 can't go wrong.. it's a buggy motor and a perfect kv for a 4s lipo setup.

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...s-Motor-2200kV

snag a mmpro and you're off to the races if you don't already have a esc. (grab from towers with a coupon for about 100 shipped) they are on backorder though :(

reno911 02.17.2010 01:31 PM

Put the tekno together the other day.
http://img38.imagefra.me/img/img38/2...5m_e4e990c.jpg
Picked up a set of cheap kings heads shock towers off eBay as well as an 8ight E body.
I chose the HobbyWing 150amp with Kershaw Designs 8xl.

Also ordered a long shank pinion in 16t. So this guy should be coming together pretty quickly. Can't wait to see how yours turns out...

el tomaso 02.18.2010 03:24 AM

Looking good, please post one more pic when you get the electronics and battery in it:yes:

Was it a nitro before like mine or a losi electric converted to tekno? How much did you pay for the car, I payed about 100 dollars for mine in norwegian kroners though.

You have to tell me which car you like better when its been run.

And is it right that the Losi comes with "inch'ic" hardware?

Thomas G

reno911 02.19.2010 07:48 PM

I picked it up for 100 also. It came with the 2.4 dx2 which I gave to my brother. It was a nitro roller. I let the guy keep the motor and servos.

I will be running it on the local indoor track here soon so I will let you know if it handles better than the Caster, buy the looks of it I will have to say it most certainly will.

Correct most of the 8ights hardware is standard not metric.

Pictures as requested.

I got the 8ight today:yipi: It wasn't as worn as it looked in the picture, and I got a new set of gravel-tires on it too. I got all the nitro-stuff out right away, no need for that now.

Can someone list the parts I will need to fully restore my 8ight, like damper seals and such.

My dad tried to order the MMP and medusa 36-60 1300kv for me, but somehow it couldn't be done. I guess the medusa is sold out or something. Luckily my tekno set is ordered and will be here in a week or two.

I sent an e-mail to mike to find out if he had any medusas left, and if the MMP was available too. I could easily buy a 1600 or 1800kv instead of the 1300. And if that fails, impakt has the 1300kv in stock.

Impakt also has tekno/neu 1512 2,5d 2050kv for 119, and 1509 2y 1820kv for 99.

Also the LHS has just got the new silwer arrow esc, and the cirtix "soltless" motors. That'd be cheaper, and if I have to go down to 4s anyway I might just try the SP stuff.

What do you think?

the MMP (mamba max pro) is a 1/10 esc. i think an 1/8 buggy might be too much for the esc to handle.

as far as the speed passion silver arrow esc, for the price you're paying, you're better off with a monster mamba or if you can swing it, an RX8.

i think for all the money you'd be spending on the speedpassion stuff, you could get alot more for your money. 4S with a $170 esc is a bit pricey.

the other side of the coin is, what if you get the 4S esc and then buy a 1700kv motor and find out you should have gone with a 1900 or a 2050? you'd have no room to volt the motor up.

I ran my 8ight conversion for 2 years with a Mamba Max esc w/ BEC on 4s lipo... you got to be kidding if you really think the MMpro can't handle it.. you can even go 6s lipo w/ the pro and bring the amp draw down more if needed.

LOL how soon people forget.... all these 1/8 esc's are only 2 yrs old now, some not even.

PS towers has the mmpro for 109 shipped w/ coupon if you have supersaver... can't go wrong w/ that.

You bought the kit for a 36mm motor, the 15xx series Neu motors are to big, you would need a 14xx series to work with a 36mm motor mount

el tomaso 02.22.2010 03:29 AM

Thanks for the replies, guys.

I am going for the MMP anyway, its the motor I'm not sure about. I have run the castle/neu 2650kv of it on 4s, without heat problems. If it can do that then I have faith it will pull a >1900kv motor on 5-6s even better.

I have been thinking, if Mike doesn't have a medusa 1600kv either, I could afford a tekin. Maybe a 1400kv buggy motor, which would be nice with the sensor esc. Only thing is these rotor things I've been hearing about, but the medusa have the endbell coming off and is also wide open with all the venting:no:

If I am going for a tekin I'll just buy the motor mount, and save the novak mount for that day when I want to find out if old novak HV 6,5t motor still works:lol:

I saw the cirtix motor has bolts on the outside, so it wont fit the mount. Its probably not the best motor anyway...

TG

el tomaso 02.22.2010 04:14 PM

Ok, now I've bought a new MMM 2200kv system for 200$, but impakt doesn't have the damn mount:whip: So, I can do three things:

-1-Find a 42mm mount in another shop, or buy one off one of you guys(hint).
-2-Sell the castle/neu motor and buy a tekno lektron 2200kv for 99$. Fits the tekno kit very well, but I have to run 4s.
-3-Sell the castle/neu and buy some 36mm motor. I hope mike answers my mail so I can know if and which medusa motor he has left of 1600kv or less.

Get an RC-Monster motor mount

stum 02.22.2010 07:11 PM

Amain as well as impakt carry the castle/tekin motor mount. It will open more doors for motor options down the road if you so desire. The 99 lektron will do the job great and won't cost that much more than the mount does so it's a very good option at that price point and could keep the 1y for spare or sell for some $$

reno911 02.22.2010 08:58 PM

I just ordered up a RCM motor mount for mine the tekno just strains the motor too much for my liking.

The Elite Mount is something that I only wish I had the extra dough for, but RCM has taken care of my needs with their mounts for too long, and they do a fine job.

stum 02.22.2010 09:04 PM

Does the RCM mount work on a tekno chassis?

reno911 02.22.2010 09:25 PM

The tekno uses the stock diff mount so I would assume that the rcm mount would work.

I plan on using all the holes where the tekno mount once was to mount my fan.

E-Revonut 02.22.2010 09:42 PM

As long as the Tekno uses a stock center diff mount theres no reason a RC-Monster one wouldn't work. Mike makes great pieces, they fit well, and we should always support the guy that gives us this great forum to chat on

nitrostarter 02.22.2010 10:00 PM

yep the RCM mount will wrk with no problems. It makes a good kit even better! i had a takno converted 8ight as well. i bought 1 long shank pinion before i bought mike's mount. it makes things much easier when mounting and setting meshes. Also have to agree on supporting Mike and this site!

el tomaso 02.23.2010 01:53 AM

Too bad, already found and ordered the 42mm tekno mount from guess where, tekno rc! I thought impakt was tekno rc's store, but I guess not?

Keeping the popular 1y then, so I'm running 4s, maybe 5s. I am looking forward to trying this car, with that green beast powering it:yipi:

I think mikes mount, allthough brake friendly, will make braking harder to set up with gearing options still on my side. It will also eliminate the elektri-clutch, and even though most of you guys seem to hate it:lol: I want to be able to try it. Othewise I too would rather have mikes mount, nice short pinions and custom batterybox:smile:

AND, not to be rude, but I can not see how anyone could have made mikes mount work with a TEKNO eight. The tekno kit turns the whole diff mount around, and the eight has a wider spacing between the two lower screws in the front. SO the tekno eight has too wide spacing of the lower screws where mikes mount would go. Or am I wrong?

TG

reno911 02.24.2010 02:13 AM

Mikes mount comes with a spacer for the other side of the diff. Raising the diff so you can flip it around on the chassis and clear it since there is no hole on that side. The tekno chassis has the hole on that side since the kit is designed to flip the diff. So in short yes they will be a perfect match.

el tomaso 02.26.2010 02:38 PM

I have finally received my MMM, but I'm selling the 1y motor new. My dad had forgotten to order the 42mm mount, so I ordered a medusa 36-60-1600kv instead from here. So I will get to run my beloved 6s packs.

I bought tools to be able to work on the car, since I only had metric tools. And also different damper pistons, damper seals/o-rings, new vented "hd" brake disks, and diff gaskets.

So now I am about to tear down, wash and reasemble the car with new fluids when I can only find some free time, damn stressfull life:lol:

Then in a week I'll get the tekno kit, then another week will pass before I get the medusa. By then I will have all I need to finish the car:yipi:

TG

el tomaso 03.01.2010 08:59 AM

I am now in the process of tearing down the car, front end is done and is in the dishwasher. I like this restoring process, its relaxing for me:smile:

I will post progress pics when I have cleaned all of the car and start to reassemble it.

Ate my words here. :whip: The RCM mount and the tekno chassis are not compatible. I will be calling tomorrow to see what can be done.

RCM mount flips only the differential, whereas the Tekno flips the diff and the two diff mounts. Making the larger diff mount face the rear and the smaller mount, which used to be in the rear, which is replaced by the RCM mount, is in the front.

So the RCM mount now replaces my front diff mount which isn't what I need. Nor am I going to hack up the nice Tekno chassis to make it work. I will call and see if it is possible to have one made for the larger diff mount.

el tomaso 03.15.2010 09:47 PM

Hi there, sorry for not posting enough.

I have received the medusa 1600kv, it looks good and I love that the wires now come out the side. After reading about all of you happy medusa owners I think I can feel lucky to be able to get one before they are all gone:yes: BUT, I read about endbells coming off..... Is there a "preventive fixing of the medusa endbell-thing for dummies" somewhere? I remember reading something in passing about sanding the face and using JB-weld. BUT I do not think I can find anything similar to JB in norway.

I am still waiting on my tekno kit, so I may try the medusa in my caster ex-1 pro. The mega motor 22/30/2 thats in it now is ok, but I think the medusa should be much more power and much less heat in that car.

Sorry for OT in advance; I have't been the most effective rc-car mechanic lately, due to severe sleep problems. I hope none of you get it! If I lie down to rest after dinner I fall asleep before I hit the pillow (for an hour max), but at night I have no chance. I have become a hobby-insomniac:lol:. My hope now is a mixture of light treatment and the natural hormone melatonin, fingers crossed.

Luckily, when I do get my eight done I can drive all night at a local school's sand/gravel yard. Because, they leave the lights on all night:intello: Thats partly why I decided to move here, since half the year in norway you come home from work after dark:whip:. That and the relaxing neighbourhood for people with dogs, since my dog is my best friend:smile:

I envy your real 1/8 tracks, I have never even seen one. The nearest is hours away, and is more of a 1/10 track with astroturf. If only I had a large property, money and other stuff I can only dream of, I'd build a huge rc-haven. With tracks for all classes, and I would let everyone drive and enjoy the hobby..... Some day(in a mean voice while pointing to the heavens above)!!!

Sorry for the long wait, here comes update and finished pics.

I have run the tekno 8ight with electri-cluth(:na: to all the electri-crap haters, hehe)and mek brakes at r/f 70/30 many times and it has easily become my favourite car. It runs cool at 13/48, and handles perfectly. I love the tekno stuff. Though my new used MBX-6 will have mikes mount, mek brakes and slipperential, just to try several nice setups.

Setup is MMM, 6s 3000mah, and medusa 1600kv, still waiting for the 1300kv i ordered weeks ago, its been shipped though. With the new motor I also ordered the new one-piece 3-shoe clutch and severall ti-ni bells, should be a nice upgrade. The 1600kv will go in the new car.

Temps are:
Motor:120f
ESC:100f
Batts:110f

I choose the tall/short battery on purpose to get the weight more to the front.

As you can see in the pics I had to use a slightly odd brake linkage setup, since using an Y-cable I can not change the direction of the brake servo. I have a used DX3.0 on the way to get the needed mixing and use normal linkage. I only payed 70$ for the DX3.0 with two recievers, and I bought two more recievers from another seller today cheap. The DX3S does not have mixing of the channel 2 and 3, otherwise I would have gone with that.

Here are the finished pics, thanks for reading.

My other tekno buggy is getting a 6s setup, with cap'ed MMPro and tekin 1400kv.

I've been running my 8ights for 3 years now truggy and buggy.. I must say my favorite combo is what I have right now.. I run a castle 1y in both the truggy and buggy, and keep one in the box to swap in emergency at the track.. MMM's on both and I run hyperion 4s lipo's, G3 5000's in the buggy and G3 6500's in the truggy. I couldn't ask for better setups.. my last two finishes were #1 in the a-main, and the prior two would have been #1 finishes but my batteries kept coming unplugged.. swapped from the crappy arse deans plugs to the losi ec5 connectors, what a difference! I should have made this investment a while ago.
