Slash 4x4 Ballistis
Wondering what you guys think about a ballistic 5.5T with a MMP on 2s in my slash 4x4. WIll the Novak sensor plug work with the MMP? What size pinion would you say to start with?
I mostly bash but plan on going to a few races this summer. I'm mostly looking for 30-35 MPH on 2s for bashing or on my back yard track. Is this a good set up or did I make a mistake?..lol Thanks guys for your help.. |
Is the only reason for the change to go sensored?
Otherwise I'd stick with stock BL for 30-35mph. The VXL system is not bad consider it lacks tune-ability. |
So your saying the sensored wire on the novak will plug right into the MMP.
Also are you saying that the 5.5T wont give me 30-35mph on 2s? I dont care for the stock VXL system. Runs way to hot and no programming. So for me it's not an option. |
You might not be able to get a small enough pinion on the Ballistic 5.5 to keep it from overheating.
|
Your really best off with the HV motors in the Slash.
|
I wouldn't run the 5.5T in the 2wd Slash much less the 4wd.
I would look to a buggy motor, something in the 3000kv range if you want to run 2s, or something in the 2500kv if you want to run 3s. |
Not the news I wanted to hear.. It is what it is and I guess I will send back when I get it next week. Would the ballistic 13.5T 3300KV give me what I'm looking for?
|
Why such a small motor?
And are you dead set on a sensored setup? |
Well I already ordered from tower and got the MMP. So if I have to return then I would like to get another from them so I can get the coupons..lol
Is there a better motor on tower for $90 |

Or get it reman from Novak for $65. (I'm sorry, I looked they just have the 6.5 and 7.5 )
|
I'll echo the recommendation from asheck...go with the HV version.
|
They do have the 13.5T for the same price.. But if you guys think HV 5.5T would be better for $10 more then I will return and go with that..

FWIW, I just got in 2 Mamba Max Pros that will be going in 2 of my 3 4x4 Slashes. I'm planning on running a HV4.5 on 2S lipo in one of them and the other will get a HV7.5 on 5S for a go-fast on-road truck. |
But wouldn't the ballistic 13.5T put me at my mark of 30-35mph on 2s? Would I have good gearing options to keep cool?
Not sure if I want to move things around for the HV motors. Plus there out of stock..lol |

It might get you there, but there is simply not enough motor mass to efficiently push the Slash 4X4. Its a heavier truck than the 2WD which would be more suited for the 13.5T. In other words, the Slash 4X4 will be more demanding in the power area and will require a motor that can put out more Watts than a standard 540 size BL motor. Trust us on this one... But if you insist on the 13.5T and want to try proving us wrong, have at it. We are suggesting a setup that will run more efficient, in other words cooler, and will have the power needed for 2s running while still being able to take a bit more voltage if you want to. |
550 vs 540
Since the HV 550 motor has a stator and rotor magnet that are almost twice the length of a 540 motor, it will have twice the torque of an equivalent Kv 540 motor.
HV 4.5 550 (5000Kv) Bal. 8.5 540 (5000Kv) Therefore, if you are running two motors (one 540, one 550) with equivalent Kv in the same vehicle under equal driving conditions, the 550 motor will only have to work about half as hard and will heat up about half as much as the smaller motor. |
LOL!!
Nope I will take what you tell me and go with it. Can you tell me what pinion to start with on the HV5.5T? I will just return the Ballistic and wait for the HV5.5T or would it be best just to go with the HV4.5T? I guess I should just do it right the first time.. Thanks for your help.. |

HV4.5 4WD Short Course 550-Size Brushless Motor -- 2S |
Thanks again for all the help. I went ahead and ordered the HV5.5T from TB with some 32p 5mm pinions 15T,16T and 17T. Hope this works out..lol
I will be shipping the ballistic back when I get it.. |

LOL.. sorry towerhobbies..
|
youll prolly want a smaller pinion i think in the 13-14 range for 30-35
15-17 should put you in the 35-40 either way it wont be no sweat for the motor and youll really like it. |
There where out of the lower 5mm pinions so I will just have to work with the 15 till I can get some lower ones. Also will have to wait till the wrath of my wife settles when she finds out I have two motors coming..lol

Will the HV 4.5 550 Novak motor work with the MMM non sensored?

I think a good 9.5 or 8.5 might be just right. Kinda late giving my 2 cents, but I had a vector X-11 9.5 in a stampede, that kinda put it in the overpowering range on 2s. I think for a 4wd slash, something like that would probably fare pretty decent. As for heat, it was a non issue for me, but might with you. The HV might be a good choice too....
|
The std novak motors are kinda small, like 380 internal size. Not much power, I tried the 13.5 on 3s with a MM in a pede and could not gear it low enough to run cool. Even a feigao 540 12s was better.
Stick with the hv novaks for a 4wd slash. The smaller motors are ok for youring cars and 10th 2wd buggies. Otherwise they do not have enough torque and also get very hot. |

been running two of these setups one w/ 8th scale tires one without clubracing at local tracks with my friend. must say this motor is way better than the hv line. mostly because it has the same ~3mm shaft which maes it a drop in replacement. i ran a 12.5 in it before this on 3s and it was soft. 540 is too small for 4wsc. the trinity motor is the same 100 bucks as the slovak and has an internal fan. get about 7-8 minutes HARD track time on a 3200 3s 40c tp for med size tracks running the stock 13 pinion and spur in both setups. 8th scale tire truck with the slipper and the other is a platinum w/center diff. temps are about 150 on the motor and around 110 on the batt and esc. dont know how fas it goes but it runs down anything we have been on the track with so far. will say that the mmp is 50% of the trucks working so good. it really is an amazing controller with some interesting features... running sensored only mode w/ no cheat mode low timing auto lipo at 3.1 100% brake
|
We found that the standard size 3.17mm shaft did not hold up well in our 550s, so we retooled with the 5mm shaft/bearings. Now, the HVs hold up very well on 2S in the 4x4s.
Some motor companies have holes in the motor cans or internal fans because their motors run very hot. We prefer closed cans because debris inside the cans causes more problems. |
thats nice.... like i said it was drop in for us. no 5mm pinions needed! and yes the 3.17mm shafts do break... in 8th scale setups because the cars wiegh 7.5+ lbs. i have used your hv motors before and was simply stating i preffer the trinity. i run against other guys using the hv on 2s with a havok pro and its fast... but not fast enough. they also run hotter on 2s than we do on 3s, not alot(~20-40degrees) but still. as far as debris inside the motor.... never been an issue, the holes are probably there as well as the fan because the motor is designed for an e-maxx which weighs twice what the slash 4x4 does. not trying to rain on anyones parade, simply saying this setup is working better than any other i have seen so far shy of a full blown 8th scale system. even then its only slightly faster.
|
In addition to breaking, we saw the old HV 3mm shafts just twist out of shape.
We are planning a Kinetic/Ballistic 4.5 SC system (2S) for the 4x4s--of course, it will be priced a lot higher than the current Havoc Pro/HV 4.5 system. |
ballistic 550 i hope but seriously if its more than around 250 theres no point
|
Got my MMP and the ballistic 5.5T yesterday so sent the motor back today. Also got my connecters on along with the three for the HV5.5T so as soon as it gets here I'm ready..:yipi:

Received my HV5.5T and wanted to say thanks for the help on making the right choice. The MMP with the HV is the smoothest best system I've ever ran and love the no heat issues after a pack.
Thanks again.. |
Well I knew it would work out for you :D Those little ( compared to a 15 series Neu) sensored motors do run smooth as silk. I was amazed that even the 4.5 will crawl on 3s, better then any sensorless setup I have.

To be honest, it shocked the crap out of me on how smooth it is. Crazy to see those slow starts..lol It's always good to ask around before jumping into stuff and am so glad I did.
I just ordered 3 lipos today so that will give me more play time when they come in.. |
