Advice needed!
So I have come to a crossroad in my RC life. For the first time I am becoming aware of my problem. I suffer from an addiction.
Anyway all funny stuff aside I am loosing it. I have 7 RCs currently 6 operational, 3 of which are buggies. I need to figure something out. I don't need all of them and I only really play with one at a time. My wife is the only person with whom I can enjoy bash time with besides being alone. I haven't took to many of the folks at the races and I can't keep paying for racing either. So what I am asking is should I just sell off everything I don't need and try to make some of the money back, or just stand by my money pits and shut up. The thing is I really do have a lot. It isn't as if I have one battery for five RCs it is more like 5 packs for each of the 5-7 RCs. I really just want to simplify. I keep thinking I need more and than I add and modify and add and modify, but really my Slash 4x4 was fine when it was a 2s vxl without losi shocks. Now it has a MMM 2650 and I had to buy 3s packs to run it. What is the easier way to sell RC stuff, eBay, RCtech, here? I have tried locally and here with very little luck, mostly here more than local. In Reno everyone seems to think that everything used is only worth about 25% of its depreciated value. I recently found that I enjoy walking with my Revo through the many trails around my home. I was thinking of some sort of rock racer type RC for that, instead of my big ole e-revo, which also has too many mods to list. I know I am starting to come off as a lunatic and it is late, but I know for a fact that a lot of those here suffer similar addiction and seem to go from one RC to the next. My question for those is where does the last one go? As of now I really want to keep my e-revo until I truly decide if a rock racer can replace it, my slash 4x4 which will most likely go back to 2s on vxl, my wifes slash 2x4, which doesn't have a stock part on it, besides the front bulikhead, my drifter, and the one buggy I want to keep is my converted duratrax raze because it truly takes a beating and if I wanted to race it I could. That leaves my 8ight and Caster Fusion to hit the dust. Which nocks off two on the list but ultimately if I add a ax10 to the mix I will only have lost one. Why do I feel so attached... I apologize in advance for my ranting. I had to let it go...:yipi: |
I'm sick puppy myself, when I finially decided to go 2.4 I purposely bought the DX3S due to only a 10 model memory to help keep the collection in check. It has helped me because prior I had 17-18 and 6 TX's . It was just crazy, now I'm thinking of downsizing again a few models to keep maitinance time down some. But I have none I can truely part with due to the mods and upgrades and appreciation plus the mentioned depreciated value aspect.
The RC's will not go bad from sitting, the Lipos will tho. If you can afford them and have a place to store them, keep them ! |
Unfortunately.
Unfortunately you are preaching to the chior around here. Most of our members have more than one toy and a good number of them have even more than you do. James aka lincpimp must have like 50 or more R/C's at his place. Look this hobby is not cheap by any means and you either love it, or you hate it. Alot of R/C stuff is depreciated more than 50% the moment you start running it. That is just simple economics. Resale value on just about anything is truly only 10% to 20% of its original retail value. The only way to maintain value in R/C stuff is to buy high end gear like UE, and even RCM gear which does not depreciate quite as quickly as some others. Why anyone needs more than 3 or 4 R/C's is beyond me, unless you race in several different classes or you have lots of kids to share them with. I have three vehicles myself, the wife has one, and each of my kids has one. The trick is to buy one and nothing else until you build the first one up to a point in which you are happy with it.
Then maybe at that point delve into another area and start another build project. The biggest problem in this hobby is that there are so many great vehicles to chose from and it is hard to stick with one type of vehicle, plus the amount of hopups for some is just rediculous. I would love to own a Baja 5b, and a high end crawler, and maybe even an F-1 speedster. We can all throw out some numbers to guess what that would cost. Every truck we have here in our house right now are 3906 style Maxx vehicles. One UE "Lightning" SuperMaxx, one RCM Maxx, One Integy Maxx, two stocker Maxx's, and one that I have not even decided on yet. Once we get all of them runing to a level that I am happy with, then I may pick up a 5b. Until then I have enough work to keep me busy around here with what we have already. You just need to be tough and limit yourself. |
1. Are you happy, content, and enjoy running/tinkering with the rc's you have?
2. Can you afford it without dipping into your savings? 3. Does you wife approve it? If you answer yes to at least 2 of the 3 questions above, then keep them. I have also amassed some rc's over the years especially after I quit drinking and smoking almost 12 years ago. I put into an account what could have been spent on booze and smoke through the years. I'm very fortunate to be able to do just that because I can get some money from it to buy what I want. Besides, playing rc with my son is priceless. I have about 10-11 trucks now :intello::intello:. Here are some of what I have: http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...Picture037.jpg Her favorite is the Gmaxx :mdr::mdr:. http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/h...Picture038.jpg |
I think I finally realized about 2 weeks ago that I have a problem too. Buddy needed a motor and I just asked him what turn and took a picture with my phone and sent it to him (had about 10 in the shot plus all my cars have ones already in them). Then I pulled out tires and had a separate box for each class that I run of new tires (40+ pairs).

Not really Yes I think I am at the point were I haven't truly found the RC I am 100% happy with. I would say it is my E-Revo but there is the two battery thing, and not to mention the release of the Summit. A little about me to help with my rut. I am 23 I have had at least one model grade RC since I was 15 before I could even drive a 1/1. I quit my job and have been doing some soul searching the last month. I worked for UPS since age 16 with work credit in highschool. Finally decided that I wanted to work in a less stressful work environment. Unfortunately for me I chose the worst time to seek my soul. I got a gig working for my LHS at close to a third of the hourly wage I was accustomed to. Got fired in two weeks for putting the owner on the spot for a answer to something that was rather important to me, my wifes bday vacation weekend. I had only asked for a Friday off. I did enjoy working there though and it was something that besides the financial situation I could see myself doing. Anyway I have spent the last 3 weeks unemployed and hating most things about this hellhole known as Reno NV. I only want to be a part of the thing I love and that is RC. I have been all around searching for a job related to something I enjoy. Finally I have decided that I want to at least be able to work in an office setting or somewhere where I don't have to continue to seek medical attention for my lower back. Back to RCs I have been spending quite a bit with a few of them lately, since I spend a lot of time at home now, and have been getting to know a bit more about my RC personality and what it is I acquire from them. That is why I am in this little pickle, I have realized I want something that hasn't been made yet. In my head it resembles something along the lines of a true 1/10 scale Summit with a single battery tray, brushless, waterproof, durable, and can crawl with good articulation. As you can see right now RCs are definitely something that brings me excitement and I want to continue in my search for that 100%. |
Apply for a job at castle...
|
Oh boy I wish, Kansas is a bit out of the way however. I have been thinking of finishing my degree in journalism and seeking a job with one of the few RC magazines we have available.

Like you, I want to be able to do RC for a living, however, I don't have access to machining equipment and would hate to rival the Monster in the online segment, and ebay is flooded with chop shops anyways. Then I looked into finding a piece of property to open a small LHS and offroad track. However, seeing the there are 2 LHS's already and both have declined sales and are struggling, I quickly rejected this idea. And people around here won't like paying to use the track except on race days. So that idea is out the window. So good thing I got my BS in Accounting, which I'm currently employed in and beginning to start my career and client base. The work isn't bad, pay is pretty good for now. So if these LST's don't satisfy my needs, thats where my girlfriend comes into play. But seriously, life is getting real for me and I have no choice but to stop spending ridiculously on RC for a while. A house doesn't buy itself... Do you have a higher education to fall back on? Or if not, have you thought of obtaining a degree? |
So this is a crossroads? Sell a little stuff to fund a build... or choose a path and knuckle down for a while ( or at least until an rc with a halo comes out )
|
Sounds to me like you need a kick in the ass to get yourself out of this funk you put yourself in. Sounds to me like your wife has every reason to put your butt on the short leash for a while. If she hasnt, be very appreciative of her.
For RC's, I'd keep your wifes Slash and your Revo. Sell the rest (50-60% of value), all the batteries that dont support those two, and start looking at either a Summit, or a cheaper option, an AX-10. Also, figure out why it is that you dont seem to get along with other RC'ers...and go make some friends/aquantinces to bash with. |
At my pinnacle I had 79 rcs... Now I am down to 30 or so. Not counting the 8 boats. I have 2 airtronics m11 radios, so I have 60 model memories...

I have been looking for jobs, I am not one to just sit on my ass. My wife is even helping here and there in the search. Like I said earlier I enjoy the people here and it felt like a good place to let off some steam. |
You could always convert your E-revo to a summit
|
I have looked into this and it requires a lot of parts that are surprisingly different in the smallest of ways. I would rather sell it and just get a brand new one, then I get the 2.4 4 channel as well. I will give the crawler/rock racer a go. See if that satisfies my fancy.

Another addicted cry for help.....
i feel your pain reno. at my worst, i had almost 30 rc's and now i'm down to 5. i don't think i could give up anymore without going totally f***ing batty. my wife generally approves because i gave up smoking, drinking and drugs for rc's, but she sees it as me replacing one addiction for the 3 i gave up. i think what it comes down to is everyone of us who has a shit load of rc's has somewhat of an OCD disorder, and it's our way finding our "happy place where we can deal". Now, i have one gorillamaxx G-4, an FLM-maxx, and 3 losi 8ights. one i race, one is a speed car and the other is a shelf queen. like i said before, if i had to sell one more, i might go more crazy than i already am. for me, i just had to stop spending when i saw the bank account start to shrink. "no more fast food, no more nickel and diming. keep what you have and don't buy anymore" is what i told myself. it helped me ALOT. i was spending tons of money on ebay and when i stopped all of that and got outside and just enjoyed what i had, i saved alot of money. i'm not so sure for all of us it's that we're addicted to the car or truck we want. it's that we're addicted to the rush of getting something new or different. you gotta reel that in bro. no good is gonna come from impulse spending. which brings me to my next point. if you walked away from the job for physical reasons like your back, then i totally agree with your decision. if it was because you were in a "funk", then you gotta re-evaluate things and know that you're a grown man and shouldn't be walking away from any job unless you have another. as most of us know, jobs are tough to find right now. you could always try the police academy, firefighting or civil service. alot of my friends started great careers in those fields. |
I think I have come to terms with owning less and playing more. I like that idea.
I did leave for health reasons and I am kind of stubborn. I was paying a lot out of pocket after insurance for a chiropractor, I was diagnosed by my doctor that I have depression, and not to mention I lost weight when I was trying so hard to gain weight. I didn't know a doctor could diagnose depression... According to my wife I seem happier and more energetic now that I left UPS as well as the time I spent working at the LHS. My back hurts less and I have gained my weight back No, not because I have been sitting around for a month. My wife has only a month left in school till she gets her BA. I told her that I would stay at UPS as long as I could to get us through it. I would say I came pretty close. Right now we are cruising along on fumes, literally we are watching everything and anything to do with the money we spend. Including my RC cars. I told her that I wanted to sell them and she said that I didn't have to sell them if it was to make payments. We would find other means. My response was that this was her only opportunity to tell me to sell them. I made up my mind a few days ago however, I really needed to downsize until things can turn around. I am in a pickle but not that it is too bad yet. Give it two months and then I will say that I honestly need to consider even fastfood chains. |
R/c's???
Why are you worried about R/C stuff right now? Your first responsibility is to your wife and making sure that she is supported from your side of the house. You need to get off your butt and get a job. Look our economy is in the toilet right now and finding a job that satisfies your enjoyment nerve is the least of your worries at this moment in time. You need to stand up and be a man here. Also finding a job with low stress levels is also a dream. We all have to pay our bills and put food on the table regardless of whether or not our work environment pleases us or not. Sorry to hear about your back issues. Alot of us have that problem, but you have to find a way to deal with it and protect your body as best you can in order to keep from ending up crippled due to your own neglegance. Start your own business detailing cars or something. Get off your butt and start doing something and stop complaining about what you don't have, before you lose what you do have.
|
Yep I got no motivation from that one...
My wife and I are together in this. She allowed me to quit and seek out another job. Stop being so old fashioned. I have been helping my aunt in law with her business cleaning houses, I am making small income. These days it is okay for the wife or WOMAN to make more money than the MAN. I made plenty more than her during my time with UPS and she is deeply appreciative. In reverse I am deeply appreciative for her allowing me to per take in this job search. We will be fine. We get through rough times together. Sorry if this offends you but Americans don't have the traditional roles that other countries may have. Here a man can be a stay at home Father, cook, and even clean. |
Jerry cut the kid some slack... I don't think he's here looking for a drill instructor:wink: And I think he's been more than up-front about the situation.
Humans can survive without lots of things for sure. I don't see many people selling furniture when times are tough, even though they can sit on the floor... It is a matter of what's important to you. Having a wife who not only tolerates the hobby, but actually partakes? Damn I know 90% of you are crazy envious of that! |
Old fashioned?
Yes I am a bit old fashioned. I am American born and rasied on American values. Sure I may come accross kind of brash when it comes to this kind of subject, but We are in tough times right now. Your wife might lose her job tomorrow, then what? WHat if she becomes pregnant and has to leave her job for medical reasons? I never said give up your hobby or your dreams. You may want to set it aside for the moment and focus on whats really improtant in your life. I think its great that your wife is supportive of your wants and needs. Hell I wish more women were at that level of conciousness. Good for you, but you still have to stand up and fill the roll of being the man. My wife also makes more than I do(so what), but I don't sit around relying on her to cover my a$$ financially. And you bet that I take care of the house and keep things running smoothly while she is at work every day. I am lucky because I now work from home. Self respect. I started working at the age of 13 to help out at home. Once I turned 18 and joined the US Navy I never went one day without a means of supporting myself and that of my family situation until I retired in 1997. Call it pride or whatever you wish. Now even retired I still work so we can both be involved in the hobbies that we choose. We are very much focused on our family life, but we make sure that we have room for the extra stuff as well.
Yes I may be a bit tough on these matters, but the bottom can fall out on any of us in a second. You have to cover your six. |
You'd be a wiser man if you took a little heed to advice from people who have been down the road you are on - aka Jerry. Yes, he can be a little harsh, but his message is true. I had a few paragraphs of "advice" typed up, but deleted it - it will mean nothing to you.
Just one thing. Go to a physical therapist instead of wasting your money on a Chiropractor. Unless you have a bone disease, or a significant injury in which your bones were unable to heal, you need to build up your muscle strength so that your joints and spine dont have to take the abuse. Chiropractors are on the fine line of being an addictive "need" also. |
Quote:
well put about the physical therapy. i did more healing in 2 months of physical therapy than 2 years in a chiropractor's office. |

However I did get good advice to which route I wanted to take with my RCs. Looking at how so many here have so many, and knowing that so many here have went through the same feuds regarding selling or not. I have talked things over with the wife and I am going to loose most of them so that we can have some extra to put into the OS savings account. We have an OS savings account that we started adding to back when she and I were both working two jobs. It is a second savings account that has slowly grown to a decent amount that we usually only dip into for things like furniture or a new computer... I guess I should just be grateful for having peers like everyone here that will give me the tough answer I rarely get elsewhere. And with that I think I am pretty much over this conversation and I have a feeling others here are thinking it has dragged out a bit longer than expected. So thanks everyone for letting me tell you a little about my life story. Next time it will be less ranting. |
Dude, get a scaler!!!! Way more fun than a traditional ax-10 or crawler. They can crawl, get submerged in mud and water, and look cool as shit. Go to rccrawler.com and peak around in the scaler sections. My name is tedo over there too, to see my build and pics. A $9 zippy 2200 last 45 minutes in the woods..
Sorry, had to change the subject, and thought he could use some "rc advice". We are all addicted to rc, some just post more than others..haha. Good luck with everything reno911. |

Seriously tho, perhaps you should try opening a checking/savings acct just for RCs. Figure out what your budget is, contribute that every month, and only draw from that acct to pay for RC stuff. $ from sold items goes into there. Helps force budgeting on people who are not great at it. |
No problem
Hey Reno911 no problem at all. We do like sharing what we know in the hopes that it will help others make calulated decisions from our experiences. Just one more note for you. Just putting in reume's will get you no where. You have to go back after one week and show them that you are truly interested and want whatever job you applied for. Most employers receive dozens of apps every day and if they never here from those people again they will only figure that they must have found work elsewhere. You have to let them know that you are motivated and ready for work. Think about it. Who would you want working for you. Someone who sets around waiting for a phone call, or someone who takes the intiiative to call back and get some level of resolution? Good luck with the job hunting.
Please don't take any of what I said as any kind of an attack on your character Sir. You came asking for advice and we will surely give it to you, even if it might be something that stings a little bit. Jtheissen is right about me. I have been through alot over the last 50 years and have helped young men and women change their lives for the better all over the world. I realized a long time ago not to sugar coat anything just to apease someone elses fragile sensibilities. I don't share advice just to hear myself talk. I have worked around the globe and I know how to get a job. Subtle tactics are for loosers. I have not gone one day of my adult life without employment. If I leave one job, you can bet that I will be starting another job the very next working day. Employers look for things like that when hiring. If you have breaks in your employment they look at this as a sign of laziness, unless you can show medical or hardship reasons for those breaks. |

Reno- I enjoyed reading this thread and learning about you. It's clear by your thoughts/ideas/spelling/grammar that you are smarter than the average bear. Most here are. The members and advice here on RCM keep me coming back for more.
I hold on to my r/c builds because nobody can appreciate the attention to detail of my builds but me. Well, not as much as me anyway. I'm proud of the research I did to find the best parts, and the time and work I put into them. Just be glad you aren't this guy, now he has a problem- <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/CpUgDQjApGk&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CpUgDQjApGk&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> |

Lito alot of people leaving the services do exactly that. They fail to maintain proper planning and fall flat on their faces, because they get spoiled with the idea of not being under the military umbrella anymore. I truly hope to see you move on to another career once you retire and realize that gaining two retirements is the way to go so that once you hit your 60's and onward there are no financial fears in your future. We will talk more about this when you are ready to move on.

I know it's an older thread but this is the only one that was interesting and doesn't have a yes or no answer for it. Plus it had space left at the end for my ramblings and the older thread usually no one reads. So you can get away with talking about your shin splints and hemriods and feel better with out annoying anyone or them calling your house and telling on you for sniffing bicycle seat outside the grocery store.
It's tough to let go of some of the RCs you build up. It all the fun building them. Gathering the parts to make the stronger and faster. It always fun to open the mailbox and get your new parts. Rip open the box to install your new gold flanged locknuts which aren't going to make it go any faster but it gives me a reason to get excited like a kid. There for a while I think had a package every other day coming in. I enjoy the hobby and it sucks the resale value on these are so low. That might be why I still have most of the ones I built. No I think it nice to hang onto something that helped the winter months go by faster while I was putting it together. Like Harold says not many people appreciate the time and effort that was put into them like we all know goes into it. With all the RC and RC project piles I got around here there is always something to do. You’re still plenty young and to be depressed at your age is a bit premature. You'll have time to be depressed later in life. You don't want to get up one morning and say were the f*** did the last 20 years go. Most of us have just accepted that we will be working 8 hours or more a day for 40+ years. I've got 28 years in and it looks like I will still have 20 more years to go. Now I am depressed. :) I've been lucky it has been pretty much at the same place but the jobs have changed. Have to take the good with the bad and hopefully your next job you can convince yourself the pros of the job make the cons manageable. I have never hired anyone from just because their resume was in the pile. It was the individuals that contacted me more then once after they submitted a resume. If you see a job you’re interested in let them know you want it. Don't be afraid to try something different for a while. You may like it and find a career doing it. I was in college to be a Park Ranger when I took a temp job doing data entry. Turned into a career in IT for me. Getting out working might help you feel better and fight the depression. I mean daytime TV sucks, all the commercials are for menstrual cycles, yazmin, house hold cleaners, cemetery plots, AARP, or some law firm wanting to know if I know anyone who has died while using some prescription drug. Next they will be asking if anyone I know died while driving a Toyota. Really is there anything on to watch during the days besides Barkers Beauties. I guess the Drew Carey Beauties now. Doesn't have the same ring. If you’re selling off some rcs you may get more if you part them out. Depending on which one it is. You got some time so research eBay, keep on eye on the prices, what is listed and when. You don't want to list your RC when there are 7 others listed if you can help it. If you watch the listing you can try and get yours listed so it's not surrounded by something similar ending before and after yours does. Seems most people list for 7 days. If you part them out check out the chops shops. They have a schedule they go by and you don't want your parts ending the same time theirs does. The toughest thing for me to do when selling on eBay is to hand my ass out there on a no reserve listing. So far it's turned out fine and the price eventually gets up close to what I am looking for but they sale faster that way. I've done pretty well on the older collector RC by watching what's being sold. It good to catch an auction where there a few different bids going on then list yours towards the end of the auction with almost identical description. The people that don't win will more then likely search for another one they just got outbid on. Good luck. I've got a bunch of projects and completed projects I need to decide what to do with too. Since I got the HPI 5b, I don't run anything else. Well once in a while I run a pack or two through a brushless but the Baja Bug hit. Good knew doctor says I don't need surgery. |
Yep well I never said I was depressed the Doctor did...
I feel great and better than I did working under the corporate monster UPS. I have had three interviews in just this week alone. I am insuring that my name is out there in the job Market. I have a few tricks that, unlike others, will most likely place a few points towards my name. Ever heard of a "Thank you for the interview" letter. Yep I have only sent out two so far, to the two employers I would really enjoy working for. One of which would be extremely ideal. As for my RC's I managed to rid myself of two and acquire two new ones at the same time... Well I traded my Caster Fusion for a really well built crawler w/Dx3r, see crawler section, and my E-Revo went for a trade plus cash for a slightly modified Mini Revo. So I am still at seven cars, but with an added 350 dollars. Not bad in my books. The only money I have spent on them was a new lid for the Crawler, CKRC baja which are thick as hell, and some new paint. I finished that one yesterday, but since it has been some interesting weather lately here in Reno I haven't yet been able to take her out. |
Rc sickness?
Hi guys ,I've had depression for 21 years,it's bollocks!!! When it kicks in,so does self doubt, paranoia, black thoughts,The list goes on.I can't even go out sometimes:oops: I'll have my batteries charged ,everything! Just too down to do it. Rc helps,I get frustrated with the trucks instead of my own insecurities. I got sick dog syndrome with my mlst,it's cost £ 250 to try and get it running. And it still won't work!!!!!!:diablo:.

Dog $hit.
Well it sounds like you stepped in some dog$hit and have not been able to get it off of your shoe for some reason or antother. Sorry for me it is simple. I just refuse to let anything or anyone keep me down for too long. When I divorced my 2nd wife and she moved 4000 miles away with our kids just to prove a point I thought my life was pure $hit. I was depressed for a few months while I muddled around in the hosue remembering every little thing the kids did in that house. I had good friends who tried to help me out of it, but the bottom line is it is all up to us to find our own way out the the crap when it hits the fan.
I knew I had to find a way to overcome the craphole she left me in, and there was no one to blame but myself if I let it keep me down. There are positive aspects to every little thing that happens to us, but we have to see them and move on for our own good will. I rebuilt my life, and found a way to pay off every debt no matter how hard she tried to make my life. I missed my kids terribly and it was hard to move on without them in my daily life. That was in 2000. In 2004 I was working two full time jobs and had three room mates paying me rent. I met my thrid wife, and #2 was diagnosed with breast cancer in Jan/2004. In 2008 #2 past away and we now have custody of my three youngest children. Life handed me a basket of crap in 2000, but I held my ground and overcame everything that was thrown at me for several years until I was able to see the light and move on with life and live it the best way that I knew how. Now in 2010 life is good and I wake up with a smile every morning knowing what the day holds for us. We push our kids hard, but we also let them know every single day that they are loved, and we know that there will be rewards for every one of us if we work hard and do what is right no matter what crap we may step in along the way. We all have the same choices in life and it is up to us how we lay our own groundwork along the way so that the later years may be kind to us. No whining or self pitty will help make that route a positive one. |
chemical imbalance
Hi.I see your of the pick yourself up way of thinking. If only! My depression is genetic,grandma,mum,aunt,cousins(1 dead) and sister. I've been on pills forever, anti psychotics damaged the nerves in my feet:rofl:.and made me trip out when I was driving:rofl:. Some people just can't do it.Years back they'd have tied me to a tree in the forest, and visited every 2 weeks with food:oh:.
