Rckcrwlr's Savage Flux HP...or is it?
This project moved pretty fast. I saw this several months ago but was unsure of what it was about. Then last months RCDriver sealed the deal.
I would like to introduce you to... http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_004.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_005.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_007.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_011.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_012.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_014.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_015.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_016.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_017.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_018.jpg |
Enter Stage Left...
TCSCrawlers.com Savage Flux 5T conversion...Yeap you read right... http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_019.jpg |
The hardest thing to do was tear apart a brand new truck...but it brings back memories of the days we did it with crawlers before there were RTR, ARTR and Kits...
Having Savages in the past, I knew that they were easy to disassemble. Removed the body, and tires... http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_022.jpg You probably think that this is just a pile of screws...actually they are laid out where they belong on the chassis...makes it easier to replace them. http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_024.jpg One side off. For those of you that never worked on a Savage. It is a Twin Vertical Plate (TVP) chassis. They are a dream to work on. They disassemble easily. http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_025.jpg Ten Minutes from out of box to this point. http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_026.jpg |
Now to reveal the excitement...
Presenting the TCS Flux 5T Conversion Kit... http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_020.jpg This crowbar is actually the front drive shaft...Getting the picture yet... 11.5" http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_021.jpg |
The details and accuracy of the 5mm chassis is amazing.
Conversion Kit goes together as fast as it was disassembled. http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_028.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_027.jpg Add the bulkhead and windshield braces (Delrin) http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_029.jpg And the 8 chassis supports. http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_030.jpg |
If you haven't assembled it yet, get me a measurement on that shaft they included in the kit. Might need to buy one for my LST conversion.
|
It took me a total of 1.5 hours from start to finish.
Here it is mocked up with 5B Wheels and Tires. http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_032.jpghttp://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_031.jpg Here it is with the stock tires (Waiting on adapters for the 5B Wheels) http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_033.jpghttp://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...5BFlux_034.jpg |
How about some referencing???

Waiting on the Savage Wheel Adapters...
Will also be adding the HD wideners to get it more proportional and handle better. Was planning on running 6s... What are your thoughts? |
very cool, how does it handle?

Hope to be able to run it this weekend...but only have two 2s LiPo's so I don't think it will be a real test... |
6s and a smaller pinion would be my choice. Gear for around 40mph on 6s and see how the motor does. Stock tires are not too heavy but I can imagine those 5t ones will add weight.
|
1.8 and 2.4lbs respectively.
I'm looking at 5S, as that is what I have for my truggy, running 47/17 (nitro conversion rather than Flux base) for ~40 on a 2200kV (for now). Quote:

I picked up the Big Bore shocks and will set it up where it squats some. Hoping to get the chassis more level. With the weight and height of the Proline Trenchers, I am hoping that it may handle pretty good.
|
I switched to from the standard pink springs to the white springs (the spring the Flux and Big Bores use are the Hellfire springs) to start with due to the increased sprung weight.

Is there room between the TVPs to put the batteries? Ditching the battery boxes would be cool if you could
|
Yes. You should check out my Flux 5T conversion for what I did.
|
The plan is to get this thing together for the weekend. Painting the body panels tonight.
I think I have all the upgrades so time to make this thing bulletproof... http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...n/IMG_0002.jpg |
Well have a pile of parts to get on this thing...decided to start tonight...
http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_001.jpg |
First thing was to widen and strengthen the rear suspension. To accomplish this I am adding:
RPM Upper and Lower Arms HPI Big Bore Alum Shocks Integy Rear HD Hub Carriers HPI Wide Track Conversion Below is the comparison of the stock and Wide Track conversion. http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_003.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_002.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_006.jpg Here is the stock suspension http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_005.jpg Now the Bullet Proof Suspension http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_004.jpg |
Next was the front end...
Added an Aluminum and Bearing Steering Crank http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_008.jpg Here is the before picture of the front Suspension http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_009.jpg After Picture, Alum Knuckles and Uprights, Big Bores, HD Wideners and 17mm to 23mm adapters (waiting on the 24mm's from HPI) http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_011.jpg Now just need to get my hands on a fast, high torque servo... (time to dig in the drawer of the unknown) |
Found a servo laying around... http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_012.jpg And started painting. This is a screwy body so hope it looks OK when done... http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_013.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_014.jpg |
Well...Here she is......... http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_016.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_017.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_018.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_019.jpg Now it's time to get things running... |
Looks good :) Interested to hear how it runs for you :)
|
That thing looks incredible!
I can't help but think though, was it really cheaper to buy a new flux and convert all those things or could you just have bought the parts you didn't upgrade and build it from ground up.? |
Nice job...
|
Wow... these 5Ts are coming out of the woodwork all over. :)

First run...
18T Pinion, 4S LiPo Can't wait to get my 24mm hexes. These 23mm keep loosening up. Motor temps never exceeded 100 degrees, ESC was topped out at 120 degrees. http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...haseII_043.jpg |
OK...everyone together... Cow Bell...Cow Bell...Cow Bell 22.2v of pure, insane power... http://i778.photobucket.com/albums/y...IMG_0001_1.jpg |
60C Lipos - Sweet lets see how well they run...
|
Yes, indeed we shall....
|
Not sure I will be getting it running soon. Work deadlines are cutting into my "Me" time and I'm heading out tomorrow for the Battlegrounds Comp. I will try to get something...
|
is there really a huge noticable difference between using 35c and 60c lipos?
how much faster would the battery drain? |
The battery wouldnt drain any faster- the motor pulls current, the battery doesnt push it. Beyond a certain point ( C rating ) you wouldnt notice any difference in terms of punch because the motor will only pull so much current ( as much as it needs to do what you want it too- acceleration & gearing load wise ), but the lipo may well run cooler as it can provide much more current than it is needed too. Good analogy for that is a fit person working out and a fat person working out; fat person will keel over and die from exhaustion long before the fit person :mdr:
|
Where did you get the HPI Wide Track Conversion and the 24mm adapters? Would like to build one myself. Been thinking about it for awhile, cause I have an XL with a 1527 and I think this would be better suited.
|
Ordered them from my local hobby shop.
http://www.hpiracing.com/products/en/102530/ Can't find the Wide Track Conversion Kit...Looks like it may be discontinued. |
Nothing at the link you provided..
