XXL w/the 1717
Received my 5mm rotor last week and got around to doing the install last night and today. I drilled the 3mm Dude mount out to 11/64 and the motor bolted right up no probs. My diffs were recently rebuilt with Nova cups and Muggy gearing so I need to crack them back open and swap out the ring and pinion back to LST. I replacd the gear that gets the most punishment in the tranny and did the gear swap for the higher final ratio while I was in there.

Nice! But that motor is BEGGING for some 6s action!! The 1521/1Y LOVED 6s and was a monster!
|
That setup looks AWESOME!
Good Job Bondo! Let us know how it performs. |
Oh I hear ya for sure !
But I have to wait till next month befor I spend any more money, I have almost $70.00 in bonus bucks at Hobby City and I'll be ordering a couple 4000mah 40C jobbers ! |
The 35C 5000's I had were great! Definitely not lacking in the power range. I'm sure I could have pushed the LST much harder if I wanted to.
|
That motor and gearing I imagine it will be a real stump puller -whip it good :whip::mdr:
|
Well I just bought the (2) 3300mah 30C 6s packs for $120.00 delivered from California from "HobbyPartz.com". I never bought from there so we'll see what they will look like ?
Hobby City is cleaned out of 6s packs from 30C and higher, slim pickings and I decided I want packs now not in 2 weeks. I wanted smaller lighter packs to help keep weight down since the motor is so dam big and heavy, hopefully the 30C will be enough for it's demands ????????? With 6s I'll also be opening my gearing options a little more. |
sweet truck! and that is one big mo mo! like the flat on one side and the rear exit wires. are they soft? or is it the hard drawn coil wires like on the neus? hobbycity is a little slow on the shipping but good stuff. they have some more of the 6s 3600 30c i use for big track runnin. kinda heavy 575g but not bad, under 600g unlike most 2x2s setups
|
The wires aren't quit as stiff as the NEU wires but certainly not very pliable either.
|
What are "Nova cups"? I havent seen aftermarket cups for these anywhere.
Just curious, but why are you going back to the LST gearing - isn't that going to give you less choice on your spur/pinion? |

The nova cups are ok, but i had clearance issues in my muggy using them as center diff with aluminum diff mounts. I prefer the Innovative-rc cups, better clearance since they have a raised end where the nova's are flat.
|
That truck's gonna rip some tar!
Looks good Bro  |

Everything is all together and ready for testing. I did the 4mm hardware shock mod and I've reinstalled the LST diff gears and changed my viscositys to a lighter weight. I was running 50,000 and was breaking the pins under the sun gear pretty frequently and thought maybe a lighter fluid will let the other tire unload rather than grip and snap ? So I'm trying 15,000 for giggles ? Have the tires mounted up and will finish glueing and balancing tomorrow, I have to solder on the EC5 plugs to the ESC and my 5s packs then test with a5s pack and 2-3s in series and see what happens ??? 6s packs in route. LST sneakers, nylon taped and mounted up to a set of (NOT DYED) 23mm PL Wabash rims w/1/2" off set. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...S/P4270022.jpg |
Those look great! Thats such a great off road tire as well! TONS of grip!
I think 6s will really be the sweet spot on this motor. Just a little low on the RPMs on 5s for my liking. I know you have plenty of 5s packs tho... |
Quote:
I cut the bead off and pulled them over some trimmed down 1st generation 420 Wabash's. When PL first released the Wabash they also had black rims, I ben hangin' on to these a loooong time waiting for the perfect tire to complete the "look" I was after. I'm hearing you on the 6s packs being the honey spot for this motor, I'm axious enough without you keep reminding me ! I should have the new ones I ordered by Fri, fat fingers crossed. |
Looking nice!
Now you need some vids pulling 1:1 tractor trailers around with that 1717. Seriously though that thing should be able to rip your guts out with no hesitation. Makes me wish I had not sold the LST2. If I do get another it will be the XXL this time for sure. |
Looking Sweet Bondo!
I thought only traxxas kids bought blue lipos:mdr: Let us know how they do. |

I was banned from TRX a couple years ago. |
Finished up all the loose ends and fine details and threw in a 5s 5K pack, did a systems check and applied throttle and next to nothing ? I was like WTF ?
After a quick check w/a volt meter I discovered a discharged pack, I have no other 5s lipos to fit this bat tray without adding a bunch of padding and by the time it finishes charging it'll be dark. So to hell w/it. So I will test Thursday and capture some video if someone is around to hold a camera. 4mm shock bolts http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...S/P4270024.jpg Motors sealed via ShoeGoo and aluminum tape http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...S/P4280026.jpg Trusty Hyperion Duo getting R done (What a PITA to learn to use this charger, but wow what a kick ass charger !) http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...S/P4280025.jpg |
Buy a tripod and a cam with a wide angle lens ;)
The motor looks brutal!! Curious to see how it will do on 5 as well as 6S. Q : are you using the EC5 from HK? Thinking about switching to them since I've had it with the Traxxas connectors, but not sure on the quality of the HK EC5's. |
Quote:
Yes to the EC5's I have 20 somthing Lipos and a dozen ESC's with them all and I'm VERY happy w/them. Positively lock together, easy to grab ahold of with fat fingers and I beleive they're more efficent than deans because of more surface area. I think this because they don't get warm like the deans did on a couple of my set ups. Not eactly a picnic slodering all them on but worth it totally. |
Well, a tripod is cheap ;).
Yeah my LiPo collection is also expanding graduatly, I've spend a ton of money on those TRX but they are a pain to solder, especially with the 10 and 8 AWG wires!. And than the housing is to small so you have to ''shave'' a bit of and blablabla. Thanks for the comment and enjoy the car ;) |
I soldered a few TRX plugs for friends with 3s packs w/8G what a PITA.
Thanks for the suggestion tho ! |
V i d e o ! ! ! !
Nothing to special, just test running in front of the house. Couldn't really open it up due to the way the street is designed with a large median but the low grunt of this motor is very apeasing to say the least ! I ran it with a Zippy 5s 30C pack and even though the pack wasn't even 90 degrees it was slightly puffy after 15 minutes, so I think 30C isn't enough for the demands of this motor. The pack is great Lipo, I ran it with the 1518 for a couple months with no problems, so it has to be the 1717 pushing the pack. I hope the 6s 30C packs I have coming will be enough ?
I may try my luck w/HC 40C 4000's, but If I have to buy some Polyquests or Hyperions I guess thats what I'll do ? http://www.youtube.com/user/bondonut.../0/CeW8VuSiftw http://www.youtube.com/user/bondonut.../1/WJQ8ho3GQdI |
Pics
Knocked some XXL post holes into a body I've had for a couple years but didn't want to ruin, seemed fitting to have a nice body over this new motor ?
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...S/P4290002.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...P4290003-1.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...P4290005-1.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...S/P4290006.jpg |
If the capacity of the packs were higher, ie 4000-5000 mah then 30c might be ok. Of course then it would be just a wee bit larger. Truck looks powerful with that 1717 though.

I was running 5s 5000mah 30C in video. I have 6s 3300mah 30C on the way and I'm afraid they may be not up to it ? |
great looking truck, but whats with the pullstart? a little joke of yours on the nitro guys? lol--josh

Quote:
Yeah, It's a Rib (joke) Ever have some moron ask you if your truck was gas powered ? I have, frequently. I can just say yes now. It has a really good muffler  |
Love the truck, is it gas powered? What kind of muffler is that? I've never seen a green one before?
|
Nice power there! Love the hum of those tires!

Yeah bro, that's sweet nectar right there! I can tell that can has a lot of torque. Seems like it's got a very smooth throttle band. That truck handles really well too. I think my ELST2 needs lowered just a tick cuz it's a little tippy.
I had to pull the tranny tonight cuz it lost it's mesh. One of the pins on the inner shaft snapped. Not sure what else I can use to keep them from breaking? I had been hearing a brief click or nappy sound and thought it was one of my diff's starting to go. I can never remember how to "test them" without pulling them? I'm still not sure that isn't a problem or if it was in the tranny this whole time. I'm gonna fix the tranny (I run XXL gears in it btw) tomorrow and see if the noise is still there. If so I'm probl looking at a new output pinion. Can't remember what they are called, sorry. But I have multiple rebuilt diffs, and I'm short on those pinion shafts that lead to the tranny. I also tapped the rear shock tower and chassis to take 4mm screws. I'll do the fronts later. It's very solid now. I'm just buying time before I move it all over to the XXL chassis anyway. I am thrilled with my setup, but I'm smelling a 1717 in my future now! Btw .... What weight diff oil are u running? Also, do you have the Nova cups in that truck? Great job! J |
Btw.. I've never liked running Dirt Hawgs for some reason. They are nice tires, but they just feel sorta "doggy" to me. There is a lot of surface mass on them. I still swear that the Traxxas Response Pro's were some of the best tires I've used (on my Revo). I'm a sucker for Bowties too. I also love Badlands. Those tires are just plain evil!!!
|
Hey Bondo, How did you lock the trans in 2nd gear? Im working on an lst now :)
|
Quote:
You can do it Ben! |
Quote:
|
Nothing fancy needed, just use the second gear assembly with a FOC tranny, you'll have reverse and it'll be plenty strong and light weight.
Losi makes a single speed hub thats 15.00 to simplify this. |
an ultra center diff or an ultra gtp center spool fit in place of the tranny using stock driveshafts:whistle:
