RC-Monster 11S E Baja

Well after 7 months of building I finally finished my E Baja.

Specs are:
Baja SS
RC-Monster E conversion (thank you Mike for such a great kit)
Neu 2220 550kv
Hyperion 35c 5000mah lipo's 11S (1x5S and 1x6S)
Castle Phoenix Ice HV160
Geared for 50mph.

Here is a short vid from the maiden run.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-IYRV5JnDg
After 15min Motor was only 130 and esc 115. Lipo's got to 103.
Biggest problem is traction, even with all the weight.

You can be proud of what you have accomplished there. Nice looking toy. For the few upgrades you have in there it looks pretty nice. The video works just fine and shows that you deffinitely have a traction issue there. Proves the point that 4 X 4 is the way to go for the Baja 5b. I would have to believe that if you do some kind of 4WD conversion that you would have an R/C vehicle that could compete on all levels. Very nice rig. I like that netting you installed to protect the internals. have fun.

E-Revonut 08.22.2010 06:19 AM

CRAZY!!! You may have some traction issues but I think if you had more traction it would get boring quick as it would be an uncontrolable wheelie machine good for nothing other than straight line runs

That is one Sweet BAJA - Good that you got some hi-res pics before the maiden voyage... Congrats....

Looks nice!

One thing I did to get rid of a similar problem in my large scale 4wd was to reduce the preload on the front springs to soften them and keep the front tires on the ground. I see the same thing in your video - under hard acceleration one of the front tires lifts off the ground (from the torque) and you turn or spin out. Softer front springs (or lowering the front) should help.

The other thing I did was to put lower weight oil in my rear diff - that seemed to help my problem some as well.

I found that having this much BL power in something this heavy made it much more necessary to tune my setup for good performance (I never had to worry much about this stuff in my 1/8 bashing vehicles). I was able to dial mine in and it handles great now. Wish you luck.

Sweet baja for sure. Love the screen around the roll cage as well nice touch. Any naked pics of how you mounted everything

pinkpanda3310 08.22.2010 09:45 AM

Yeh, that's a very nice looking baja. I think the cage/mesh has something to do with it. I would also like to see underneath. Great job :great:

nitrostarter 08.22.2010 10:07 AM

Really good looking Baja there! She runs great and those temps are well in check.

Have you check the data logging feature of the ICE HV yet? I'm curious as to what kind of output you are seeing.

OZ-RUSTLER 08.22.2010 03:44 PM

Thanks for all your kind words guys.
Yeah, the stock settings of the suspension need to be adjusted (aswell as throttle control) to help with some of the traction issue. But apart from that I am very impressed with the outcome of this buggy.
I will try to get some naked shots soon, aswell as some data logged from the ESC.

Here are a few naked shots and some data logging.

So to me it looks like there is nearly 6HP there and max amps at 106.5, impressive. If some of you can help me with working out how my lipo's went, it would be much appreciated. I had the LVC at 3.4v and when it hit, I just disconnected the lipo's and took a reading of voltages and all cells were around the 3.7v mark.

Thanks in advance.:great:

Very nice! Out of curiosity how much does it weigh?

Thanks.
It weighs 11.8kg, nearly 26lbs.

Dang... thats pretty impressive for it to go like that. :)

I saw somewhere, don't remember where though, someone had converted their Baja to 4WD via a belt driven system. Looked a bit klugey in how but something like that would help with getting traction. :)

Yeah I have seen that Baja aswell, wasn't impressed. I knew I would have traction problems from the start, from the high powered Rustlers I had with 2WD. But that is the challenge that I like or I would of started with an FG or Rampage. Also the video was shot in an unfamiliar place to me and it had hard dry patches. I usually run on soccer fields with wide open softer ground, but that time they were occupied.

thzero 08.22.2010 11:27 PM

Gotta run that bad boy on some real dirt heaps!

I assume you want to know why the LVC was set at 3.4v/cell, yet the cells were 3.7v when measured? Two reasons: 1) cell voltages will drift back up a bit when left unloaded for a few minutes, and 2) depending on how the LVC actually works, if it read a momentary 3.4v/cell voltage sag because of high acceleration urrent, it would trip the LVC even though the nominal voltage is closer to 3.7v/cell.

Nice job by the way!

Dj_Sparky 08.23.2010 11:04 AM

Wow, the Castle motors never cease to amaze me.

And very nice build. I love the motor protection. What kind of net/setup do you have there? I'm looking for some ideas on how to protect a motor I have

That's what I see with the HV ICE 160. The power will cut off under hard acceleration near the end of the pack (voltage momentarily drops below lvc setting), but will continue to supply power if I drive less aggressively. A good feature - meaning I can drive it back to my car at the end of a run, rather than carry it. Probably also good for airplanes to allow them to land - which it was designed for.

OZ-RUSTLER 08.23.2010 03:45 PM

Thanks BrianG, I had a feeling that was the deal with the cell voltages.
DJ_Sparky, I used an Outerwears Large Electric motor protector which I cut in two peices to fit on the front and the rear of the Neu. Was a real PIA to fit over but it fit allowing the fan to cool the motor.

what are those rubber band rings that are holding the outerwears on the motor?

jpoprock 08.24.2010 09:32 PM

Man, I love the look and size of the Baja 5t's, but I'm wondering if these vehicles are a bit more than I want to chew. I'm so comfortable with my 1/8 sized 6s MT's that I wonder if I shouldn't just enjoy those for a while, and maybe creep up in power when the new CC ICE MMM XL HV ???? comes out, and check out 8-10s?

Hopefully one day someone will come out with an awesome 4x4 baja 5t, or a cool conversion? Then again, my buddies and I are brainstorming a custom Losi XXL 1/5 scale chassis. We've already finished our custom 1/8 chassis and skids, and will soon be done with an Erevo tranny version with side battery trays!

JERRY2KONE 08.24.2010 10:42 PM

Me to.

yea me to. I think most of us hope to have an HPI Baja one of these days, but dumping a grand just to get started is allot to ask of anyone. Especially in todays economy. Looking at hopups and brushless conversions owning an electric 5b or 5t will cost us about $5K so we have to creep up on something like that. Good luck with dealing with your urges. We all know this is like crack for us, and we have no plans on breaking the habit. Plus there is no medication that will help ween us from this habit. Oh well.

They are just rubber plumbing rings. On the rear of the motor I have installed a hydraulic pipe clamp that is fixed to the rear chassis for extra support.
