My Flux Rebuild and Upgrade
Well Tonight i started a project. My flux was Dirty and the pinion was stripped so i thought i would tear it apart, clean it up and throw on some upgrades i had in the garage, collecting dust.
As i started tearing into it, ive found a few thing that were i need of repair since the last run. 1) 20t pinion 2) Drive gear (18-23t) 3) upper arm 4) SHD Dog bone 5) rubber rings in the diff cups 6) Servo Horn was about to fall off 7) Rear shock bolt bent 8) Chipped drive cup Thats all ive found thus far i still have the front end to go though. I guess it was time for a tear down... I started with this. http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4025_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4027_large.jpg I replaced the stripped pinion with a 18t. I have ordered some 4200mah 35c lipos to run 5s in the flux so under some advice im going to re-gear it to be safe. The Stripped Drive gear i replace with the HD drive gear. Had to clean out the inside of the trans case to, what a mess of metal dust... I Added a HPI Suspension Conversion set while the truck was apart, as well as HPI sway bar kit, and a PRC wing mount and pro-line wing. The Bullet proof diffs were still in perfect shape after all the abuse so thats a plus. lol http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4026_large.jpg Heres the main Chassis cleaned up. Still using the TCS TVP's. Super tough and perfect fit. Running an Ace 1015 servo for steering. Here's the Rear section Almost complete, minus the shocks, and some tweaks. http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4030_large.jpg And partially assembled. I may lower the wing yet, it looks a little high. http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4032_large.jpg So all thats left is the Front end tomorrow and and the shocks and tires and its all set! |
Very nice clean up though I worry about how long that wing will last after some crashes and bad backflips. You planning on going XL conversion?
|
ya the wing may not last, i just hated the wheelie that would send you into a cart wheel. i thought this might act and a controlled wheelie bar perhaps. if it brakes no biggie the parts are cheap enough, and if its a compete bomb ill just throw the wheelie car back on.
And at the moment im just gonna run the standard length chassis. |
Front end went from this
http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4034_large.jpg To this http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4035_large.jpg And back together almost done http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4037_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4039_large.jpg Front end all i found for damage was a bent shock shaft, wrecked lower a arm, and a bulkhead brace. This truck will be running tip top now i hope! |
God, I hate cleaning my cars after hitting something wet, it gets EVERWHERE. After I get FB2 back together and clean from my last drive, im avoiding anything remotely damp from this point forward. If I cant blow it off with the air compressor, I'm not driving in it.

lol looks like my work bench. I have to talk myself out of tear downs, and to leave my trucks dirty. When i used to have one i would tear it down after every bash damn near...but with 4 trucks they stay dirty....tell you the truth they look better that way anyways, that and your not afraid to thrash them since there already gummed up.
|
It is amazing how long it takes to truly go through your rides when they are torn down, cleaned and put back together.
Yours came out very nice..I recently did my mbx5t....4 hrs. later it is ready to go again. |
I agree magman, this truck was due for a tear down, i havent had it apart is a long time. kinda neglected...its good again until a bunch of other stuff breaks on it. lol
Got her all finished up tonight. Ready to go for when the new lipo gets here. then i'm into 5s fun!!! http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4040_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4041_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4042_large.jpg |
Looks almost brand new ...well done!

Since i get most of my vehicles used, I will rebuild them once right after I get them and replace any worn parts and make sure I take a LOT of time to do it right. Then I will leave it as is for a long time, only blowing it off with compressed air after each run and maybe occasionlly refilling shock and diff oils. Though, when i brake a part and rplace/repair I clean that area too. On my race vehicles that's another story though. They look and perform like new every weekend!:mdr:
|
By the way, can you do standing backflips with the wing?
|
dunno about the standing backflips yet. ill let you know tho.
|
vids are required :)
|
i should be able to get some vids for you guys. i might go throw the 4s packs in it today and go for a scoot. im paranoid about blowing the esc all the time tho, lol. Is it ok to run 4s on the 18t pinion? Ill just watch temps i guess, and hope for the best.
|
You should be absolutely fine!!! dont worry about blowing the esc....
You know you can blow your esc having too smaller a pinion as well with lipos that do not have adequate capacity ratings! not only from over heating! i dont mean to make you more paranoid...sorry haha Just chuck the 5s in there with the 18/44 gearing and it should go like a rocket and temps should be absolutely fine conisdering you are running on the road with very little resistance compared to grass etc.. |
i dont have the 5s yet otherwise id be ripping already. lol. im limited to 4s till the pack comes in the mail. I got a little more done ionight tho in preparation for 5s running. I adjusted the HPI suspension conversion tonight. I think i have it set up alright, a few test runs will tell me better though. I Also added Lunsford titanium turnbuckles up front, as well as add a skid plate. I used a RPM plate, and just slightly modded it to fit. seems to fit real well actually, and its on there tight!
http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4043_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4045_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4046_large.jpg |
How the hell did you get that RPM plate to fit on there? And what are the screws going into? i'm amazed at how much crap the skid plate keeps out of the chassis. Since running without it once in the mud, i'll never do it again
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...e2/skid2-1.jpg |
RPM X skidplates have been used before on a Flux. The skidplate is flexible enough to bend to the shape of the Flux chassis. The RPM X skidplate comes with cross beams that have cutouts on the end that allow them to sit in the cutouts in the TVPs. Then you just screw the plate onto the holes in the crossbeams and that pulls everything up tight.
I was going to use one on my build but decided to make a custom one instead out of 3mm MDF. Was very easy to do. http://i1010.photobucket.com/albums/...h_IMG_0387.jpghttp://i1010.photobucket.com/albums/...h_IMG_0406.jpg Rear arm mud guards help a lot too with keeping the truck clean. |
88 i have been trying to get my suspension conversion adjusted to give me as much turn in as possible.
I do not think i have been able to get my steering to turn as much this picture below... Could you take a picture from above with the steering at full lock please? I am curious as to how you managed to get it to turn that extremely... http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4043_large.jpg |
ya ill get some pictures for you today after work. And freeze i just mounted it as you see. it was a bit to fanagle it into place (rear mount) and i had to trim a little bit off the underside for it to suck up. i used the smaller screws from the bottom of the skid plate to get it nice and tight. fits like a glove, just two extra holes is all.

Hey guys with Castles big sale i was wondering if any of there great motors would be a good fit for my flux running the 5s hyperion 4200mah 35c packs. any insight?
|
I was looking at that myself. Wondering about the 2 15 series 1800kv motors. Both should fit the stock mounts with a little shaving. The 1512 1.5 turn is about 13mm shorter than the stock 2200kv motor, and the 1518 1 turn is 8mm longer. The 1518 would be ideal, but not sure if it will fit. i'll measure here ina second...
|
shaving of the motor mount is required with a dremel... not hard work. i have done it and i am running a 1520.
|
Muggydude, don't put a 1512 in there, it's less powerfull that the stock 1515 Flux motor.
|
so by the sounds of things the 1518 and 1520 are both good candidates. is one better suited then the other?
