1717 in a Desert Boy Chassis, It can be done !

Since I bought another 1717 I thought I squeeze my 1717 Heli version into my DB-17 chassis. Hope this well help you fellas wanting to do the same ?

The 1717 Heli version is needed unless you grind one side of the can flat ?

Use a dremel deburing bit to hog out the 3mm slots on a FLM or RCM Revo 3.3 Nitro conversion mount.

This is the gimmick I used and it made short work of the aluminum, a small round file will work but you'll be there a while.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9240011.jpg

1717 installed
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9240013.jpg

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9240014.jpg

I then cut a piece of 2" X 3" X 3/16" flat stock and drilled and tapped holes (4mm)for it to be mounted where the original Flux mount went on the motor plate.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9240015.jpg

I then eyeballed where I wanted the mount to be on the tapped plate for optimum gear choice (I can easily use a 10T pinion up to at least a 18T with the way I've done this) I counter sunk the holes that the hardware attaches the FLM/RCM mount to the plate.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9240016.jpg

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9240017.jpg

Then once all together I placed the assembly on the Flux motor mount plate and eyeballed where I needed to trim the chassis to allow the FatBoy 1717. I didn't have to remove much, it took a little bit because I had to cut a little reinstall, cut a little etc etc. After I filed the cut edges I ran over the shiney alum w/a black sharpie.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9240018.jpg

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9240019.jpg

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9240020.jpg

The draw back to stuffing this pig in here is I have to relocate the servo from the original FLM servo plate and reinstall on the side of the chassis rail but I'm not comlaining.

Nice! I was hoping somebody would figure this out. I just wish the 1717 came at a higher kv. On 6s I dont think you can even reach 50mph with the highest gearing.

mac3194 09.26.2010 12:47 PM

i hope we can see a video of this monster in action!

Bondonutz 09.26.2010 01:16 PM

I'm working on it as I write this post, I hope to have it all together today but I think I'm gonna swap out the RPMs for the stock arms and I have a pin wedged in the FLM bulk. Should be fun getting out ?

Video soon

You could use 10" diameter tires.

Nard Cox 09.27.2010 03:25 AM

That's the motor mount the FLM FTC set has right? Are you saying it will fit without a problem?? I ordered a 1717, but the normal version because I thought it would never fit anyway ...

What is the diameter of the shaved side of the 1717 Heli?

EDIT: 46mm, it's on the site ...

It will. Just put a 25tooth pinion and install the high speed idler. I did the math. My db17 does 50mph with small racing truggy tires on 4s with the 20t pinion, high speed idler, and 2200kv motor.

Fast Lane Machine Bulkheads and HPI Anti Sway Bar kit

I had to do a bit of modding to get the sway kit to work w/the FLM bulks but it can be done with some patience and a 3mm drill&tap.

As you see I trimmed the front of the bulkhead down with a dremel wheel and hand file. I mocked the sway bar stay and marked holes, drilled and tapped.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9270021.jpg

Iwas able to use the little caps that are supposed to retain the upper arm pins, this took some modding also. I had to trim some plastic on 3 areas of the cap but it looks like It's supposed to after installation.

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/P9270024.jpg

Just need to do the rear sway now, I hope this is the last of the stuff I have to do to this thing far as mods. Ben tinkering on and off for almost a week again and getting anxious to drive this thing. I also hope(I am somewhat confident) that the sways will aid the handleing quit a bit but we'll see I reckon ?

Doh, Just remembered I found some Proline 23mm 40series 1/2offsets that I have coming. I need to drill holes in the face of the velocity rims and then dye Black and install the tires. Not sure what I'm gonna use, probably the Losi ATX's. I know they are fairly common but they are a great tires for all around traction and durable. I may snipe them for more tread flex and better grip. I'll see how ambitous I am when they mounted ?

thzero 09.27.2010 04:52 PM

FLM really needs to update their machining for the Savage bulkheads so that it works with the introduced swaybar kit.

Have fun with the crappy 23mm ProLine hubs... I destroyed like 4 of them within a span of a couple weeks. Much rather stick with the 17mm standard hubs (or go with the 24mm HPI hubs).

Bondonutz 09.27.2010 05:59 PM

Not useing PatheticLine 23mm hubs, A company called American CNC Machine makes far superior 23mm hubs for most applications and they are usaully much cheaper.

For LST2/XXL applications the CEN stock 23mm hubs are the bomb, super cheap and they are steel.

These are for a REVO/Maxx but you get the idea

Ah, good info...

Nice work on the sway bar mount Bondo. Taking those ears off completely looks like it was definitely the trick - yours looks like it fits better than mine ended up. Now get this thing runnin!

Bondonutz 09.28.2010 08:16 AM

Thanks JT, I'm trying to get R done ! Ben strugggleing with finding time to do so.

mini_t racer 09.28.2010 12:29 PM

you have a great project mate but what is the red part fitted to the spur gear if i may ask

Looks like a home made spring washer (rubber o-ring)????

Bmr4life 09.28.2010 03:00 PM

Got my first "rough draft" mount done while at work today. I definitely learned a lot while making it. It works for the stock gear set, but has almost no movement since I botched the drilling of the mounting holes on the bottom. If I ever want to run a different pinion, like a 25t, I'll have to slot the motor mount bolts so I can get more side to side adjust ability.

Don't know why but mine has a plastic race rather than metal like in the picture ?

It's a part from kershaw designs it comes in the spring washer kit. I'm not exactly sure what the red piece is called though.

"Thrust Bearing"

thanks lol

this is a beast

Bondonutz 10.01.2010 03:14 PM

Should have complete build pics later today/tonight
Just finishing the little stuff today, had to jump through hoops to get a top control arm to work w/the HPI aluminum axle carriers and FLM bulks, everything was to long or to short.
So I had to make my own, PITA ! :whip::whip:

Bmr4life 10.01.2010 04:07 PM

lol im looking forward to it as well...maybe not as desperate as these guys tho. :na:

It will be interesting to see what kind of benefits\drawbacks eventuate from running a motor of this size in a Savage truck.

I got out of bed for nothing ?

Finially finished the entire assembly, Had insomnia last night and was balanceing tires at 4am. I haven't ben feeling the greatest the last couple days so I may not test until Monday or Tuesday ?

I installed the ESC(pulled red wire) , 1200mah 2s ThunderPower RX battery and RX on battery tray, lots of room for electronics there.

Mounted and balanced PL Trenchers on 23mm 40series 1/2" offset Dyed PL Velocitys

http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...E/PA020012.jpg

The XL body doesn't fit to bad, Think the next thing I may consider makeing will be a roll cage for the cab and tie into the F&R shock towers ? A roll over w/this Heavy assed MoFo will destroy some Polycarbonate.
Time to look for some 1/4" 7075 solid rod and fire up my aluminum welder.

Bmr4life 10.03.2010 05:30 PM

I like those wheels and tires. How much do they weigh?

Bondonutz 10.03.2010 05:31 PM

13.2 oz each

Bmr4life 10.03.2010 05:35 PM

For the wheel and tire combo? Man. That's not bad.

Very nice build there Bondo! That thing's gonna kick butt!

What's that rotor I see in picture #1?

Nice job fitting the motor in. Do you think it's possible to squeeze the 1717 into an E Revo? I'm thinking about taking a look at that when my order comes in.

Bmr4life 10.03.2010 05:50 PM

Bondo, I just realized you drilled those wheels out. Aren't you worried about them breaking under such a heavy vehicle?

Thank You Sikes
Rotor, the 6mm shaft that I turned down from the 1717
1717 in a Erevo, It's possible but thats asking a lot. The motor is nearly 2lbs and hangin off a questionable qaulity aluminum plate and a plastic trans case I can't see it working for long if it fits ?
If you try, get the heli version w/the flat sides.

MB4;
Not worried in the least, The structural webbing/braces are still intact.

Bmr4life 10.03.2010 06:06 PM

Gotcha. Well they look nice. I may have to try that.

Bondonutz 10.05.2010 10:32 PM

Went and ran the truck this afternoon, ran very well ! I'm very happy with the way it handled, sure footed and really put th power down with all the weight it has. With weight biased being 70/30 Front to Back it hardley wants to wheely at all with good traction. So far the BP diffs are holding, I need to pull them and fill with heavier diff fluid. I filled them w/15K and it's a bit to light for my preference.

I ran 2 sets of 3s in series and all the temps were great except the lipos got a little warmer than I would like. They were 115 with 82 ambiant temps. Think I'll look into a larger spur rather than a smaller pinion.

Heres 2 short videos, just a church field nothing special. When I take it out for a serious bash I'll grab some video of some serious terrain challanges.

Dial in some more punch control maybe?

It appears to have a ton of bottom end torque.

What speed do you top out at on 6S?

Too bad we don't have a good 8S Castle ESC yet.

The 1717 looks promising. I can't wait to get my Castle Motors.

I'll have a 1518, a 1520, and a 1717 to experiment with.

Thanks for the vids Bondo. I really enjoyed em.

Bondonutz 10.05.2010 10:50 PM

Yeah, I forgot to mention that I plan on checking my settings befor I change gearing (I think PC is set at 80% ?)

After second run the motor was 137*, only let it rest after first run long enough to change packs.

The ESC was barely 90*

The motor can handle much higher gearing than that.

If you were to do an Eagle tree graph on this setup, I imagine it's spiking really HUGE on take off. I would definately play around with the ESC setting to tame those spikes as best I could. Without taking away performance, of course.

I remember a setup in my E Revo. A 36-60mm Medusa Can that was 1500kv.

Gearing was 22/40 using Mod 1 gears.

The motor handled this just fine with a heat sink/fan setup.

BUT.............on 4S it would literally carry the front end around.

I also remember running 2-4S 4000mah 20C packs in parallel with this setup, for some really good runtimes. Well..........one day I charged em up and hooked up a "SERIES" connector by mistake. This shoved 8S power through the ESC.

It armed, so I took off running. Not realizing what I had done. Until I seen the truck do a 30mph backflip when I stabbed the throttle.

I immediately realized my mistake and changed back to paralled. Everything survived.

We do need a 8S Castle Controller.
