How to Stuff Large Castle Motors into an E Revo?
I just got my first of two orders from Castle. Thank you Castle!
Secondly, I would like to say "Dang! The Castle 1717 is HUGE!" Has anyone managed to stuff the Castle 1717 OR the Castle 1520 into an E Revo? Please share your setup info. Pictures are a plus also! Thanks in advance. There's gotta be a way.........There's gotta be a way.........LOL |
I've a 1520 in my G-eRevo with Mikes centre diff mount :)

What voltage are you running and what top speed are you geared for? Pics? One thing I noticed about the 1520, The Magnets seem VERY strong. |
Had to take a 1717 apart and inspect it's intrals. LOL
The Magnets on this huge rotor are very strong. It measures 23mm in diameter and the magnets are 43mm long. This thing MUST be a beast. |
6s 5K's 30C - I'd say mid 40's which seems about perfect for what i want.
Whats great about this setup is the weight is so low in the chassis. A few small cell phone pics... http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...k/eea5ef0d.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...k/ebaa30e0.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u...k/988f27af.jpg |

The Motor makes the Castle Blower look small. Were motor temps warm without the fan? The 1520 shouldn't be hard to fit into the E Revo. I've been looking at the setup. It won't fit in the lower position. It's too long and the shock mount is in the way. It appears like it will work in the upper motor position with the twin motor plate. This motor is so long. Does it need any additional rear support? It almost appears to be a bit large for those small 3mm mount screws. |
Honestly I would brace underneath - Thats why I have a piece of delrin under the motor between the TVPs - You can see it in pic 1.
Only mod I need to do is to thicken up the diff oil a little more in the CD. |

You're too funny Bondo!
There's gotta be a way! I've been told you can put an airplane motor in a submarine if you want to.............bad enough! LOL By the way, what were your thought when you first received the 1717? and then opened it up? I see Quality! |
I have my 1520 mounted in the front/upper position on the dual motor mount, traxxas front swaybar clears with no issue. It won't fit in the rear/lower position. If I remember correctly, in the lower/rear position the 1520 extends past the rear shock mounting screws, so even a short shock mount won't help. The 1520 is fun as hell on 6s, but the front/upper mounting position doesn't help handling. Body roll is ok for bashing, but there's too much weight up front. Transitioning between under and over steer is not very predictable. And the stock motor wires barely make it to the esc.
Edit: added pics and measured my 1520. The red arrow indicates where the 1520 would end up in the chassis. Almost touching the shock screws. Maybe if the mount was aluminum you could shave enough down and maintain strength, but only if the motor mount was shaved down to move the motor forward too. http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k3...20Sale/013.jpg http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k3...20Sale/016.jpg |

I'm in the process of seeing what gearing is going to work for this. I just mounted the motor in the front position. What's your gearing on 6S and how's your temps? I wonder if this would work on 4S? Thanks for the pics! Great! One suggestion. If you would rotate the motor 90 degrees and bolt it back up, the motor wires would come out the side and not be so much of a target for damage. |
I think everyone is going nuts with these motors. I ordered a couple 1717s, 1520s and a 1518 and I'm not sure what to do with them yet or even if they fit in anything I have. I'm thinking we have this all wrong. Wouldnt a 1512 on 6S be more than plenty enough for these trucks? I guess thats no fun.
I've got a couple of 3905 emaxxes and it looks like the 1518 and 1520 should fit. I dont know about the 1717 yet though. I did a search and over at the traxxas forum some guy is running a 1717 on his erevo and he just barely made it fit. http://monster.traxxas.com/showthread.php?p=4602445 |

A 1512? Well, thinking back about the Medusa 4 pole motors, it would probably be enough. Thanks for the info! It's all about the fun of doing something different. |
21/65, and I was seeing 150's after 15min on 90 degree days. Switching from stock old style maxx tires that were filled with sand to Proline Mashers and the Castle blower brought it back into the 140's on hot days. Think part of it is my worn out lipos, they come out warmer than I'd like. But this is also the redheaded step child of my fleet. Bought it for cheap and I beat the snot out of it too, lots of hard braking, etc. I'm suprised I've only taken out 1 rear diff so far.
I'd clock the motor 90 degrees, but I think the sway might hit. I never tried it because I always run a body. Except for this one time and of course she traction rolled when I was just "testing" something. Got lucky it was going slow and didn't fray the wires. |

EDIT: RIGHT... |
you could just make a new motor plate to mount the 1717
|
The 1717 just fits in the rear position, but i think you are limited to gearing. You wont be able to get the motor close enough to the spur. Might need to get some big pinions and big spurs. Take a look at this http://monster.traxxas.com/showthread.php?t=500695
By the way i got a 1527 to fit into a G3R carbon mounted on a CD |
I have a 1520 in mine
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...0-13031557.jpg 65 spur 25 pinion Is it correct that the 1520 is longer in length than the 1717? I might pick one up,if they're still available next week |

There are definate advantages to having the motor work in the lower position. Thanks for your input Hescobal and welcome to the forums. The 1520 is 3mm longer than the 1717. |
@ Hescabol Wow that's a tight fit, even after trimming the shock mount. Have you had any problems bending the shock screw since trimming the top of the shock mount? Think I'm going to have to give it a shot either way, to get my handling back.
|
I haven't had any problems with the screw bending, but I haven't took any large jumps
Also, thanks for the warm welcome =} |
OK, anyone have an idea where I can mount the other ESC?
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...m/DSC08268.jpg Just kidding! I'm going to try the 1518 1800kv version first. I'll have to remove that 1520. I thought it would make for an interesting picture though. LOL |
I just fitted the 1518 into my E-Revo and it was easy. Little bit of trimming of the rear shock mount was all it took (and the gearing change).
Here are some pics of the size difference between the 1515 and 1518. http://i55.tinypic.com/2v3jxpj.jpg In the E-Revo. http://i51.tinypic.com/dd2ob6.jpg And a close up of the trimmed shock mount. http://i53.tinypic.com/p38yp.jpg I am going to stick a 1717 into one of my other revos which should make it interesting. LOL. I am actually working on a transmission plate that would move the motor mount up higher and allow for more gearing options. We'll see how that works out. If it comes up OK I might Ebay a few pieces. Anyway now I have to buy cars to fit these guys into. http://i53.tinypic.com/v4wbxl.jpg Curse you Castle. Thats more money I have to spend. Now I wonder where are the HV car ESC from Castle? |
Ok, I've had a chance to get a couple of runs in on the 1518 1800kv motor.
Gearing is 24/52 on 4S. According to Brian's Speed Calculator, this is about 40mph. Power is fed from 2 - 4S 4000mah 20C Turnigy Packs ran parallel. This motor makes really good power and doesn't break a sweat. Temps are about 70 degrees outside and I'm sure the motor barely got to 110 degrees. Very efficient! I predict this motor will live a very long time. It took awhile before any heat could be detected at all. I didn't take it easy on it either. I must try it on 6S. |
Omg there is some serious hardware pr0n in this thread! :surprised:
:whip: |
Able to get my 1717 to fit and test it real quick outside
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...1-10010300.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...1-10010327.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...1-10010352.jpg http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q...1-10010509.jpg |
Damn dude, you keep squeezing those big motors in there!
Kershaw has a mount that raises the motor up a bit to clear the shock mount. Its one of his funky designs though and it doesn't use the stock traxxas cast piece. I'm thinking about making a new motor plate to raise the motor, but while using the stock cast aluminum piece as well. I'm sure Monster Mike could come up something much nicer and cleaner than I could though. Hint Hint:intello: |
Even though I do have a 1717 in my second Revo (pretty much a shelf piece) I can't see too many people going out and doing the same. Just way too much of an overkill so making a mount for mass sale doesn't make much financial sense to me. Anyway the 1518 is about as a perfect of a match for the Revo as you could get and it will fit with only minimal messing about.
