12s baja 5t post build ** New video
http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/r...h_DSCN0398.jpg
http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/r...h_DSCN0397.jpg http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/r...h_DSCN0396.jpg http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/r...h_DSCN0395.jpg http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/r...h_DSCN0394.jpg Above are some pics of my BL 5t that is finally running. I purchased this truck almost turnkey from a board member. The truck had the following items with it when I purchased it. Neu 2220 2y 550 kv motor w/fan and ribs Hyperion 35c 6s 5500 gen 3 lipos (2 total lipos) RCM brushless conversion kit Pistix stick TR quick diff Craftwerks layshaft Darksoul axles extenders After market rear hubs/axleshafts Solid rear spool HD gears in the gearbox Hostile one pc rear hubs Upgrade brake servo Upgraded rear brake setup Proline Trencher tries all around Aluminum rear bumper with wheelie bar Castle Creations Pro BEC RCM 16 and 18 tooth pinion gears 58 tooth spur gear As you can see it was already pretty nice machine when I got it with about zero run time. In other words it was MINT. I have purchased these items so far: Overkill aluminum rear upper a-arm with both aluminum and steel heim joint. Not installed on truck yet Overkill front heim joint. Not installed yet Castle Creation Pheonix Ice HV esc For a radio I'm using a Airtronics FHSS 2.4 radio The truck is currently geared for 60 mph. I need a bigger spur or smaller pinion to slow this truck down. Today was the first time that I have ever drove or seen a baja driven in person. Very different from my BL e-revo/BL savages/BL Losi XXL trucks. The Ice HV does not have brakes or reverse. I started with the power take off setting at "low" and the throttle response set at "slow". I ran it like this for about 20 minutes. Which was long enough for my first crash while jumping. haha This bent my rear aluminum bumper pretty good as you can see in the pics. I then changed the settings to power take off "medium" and throttle response to "medium" This was more like a "normal" brushless truck. I went to the local park and had a blast for about 20 minutes, until the my screw cam off my layshaft letting the spur gear go. Bad news is I lost that screw and had to stop playing. The truck has incredible power. It easily over powers the Proline Trenchers tires kicking the truck side ways when ever I wanted and power slides were no problem at all. When the tires did hook the truck would willie too. So far for run times I have only made it about 20 minutes. The first battery pack I had to get back to work and of course loosing the layshaft screw cut the second test session short. I did check the lipos at the end of the first run and they were at 35% full. So I'm guessing 30 approx minutes run times. you can buy bigger lipos 6500 vs 5500 , but I'm not sure the bigger lipos will fit. I'm going to look into this very soon. I was able to recharge the lipos in 27 minutes after the first run, thats both packs in 27 minutes. If you have any questions fire them off. This will be a ongoing build as I want to replace the stock steering setup and lighten the truck. I'm thinking of going back to the stock rear bumper. I would also like to relocate the brake servo to allow more room for larger lipos. As long as we are talking about brakes, the rear brakes were having trouble slowing the truck down. I will look into that more at a later date. Tim |
WOW a 12S baja! I love the size of these...just wish they were 4x4. Yours looks great.
|
Very nice Baja!
Really love those trenchers too! They look really meaty!! |
the tires are meaty, but its like driving on ice with this setup in the local park.
I plan on getting some of http://www.davesmotors.com/s.nl/c.88...t.A/id.5966/.f for both the front and back. I have heard nothing but great stories about these tires. I can spin the trenchers at will right now at any speed. |
Great Baja.

I know I have with ONLY 11S  |
great that means I have to learn to drive.
|
Very cool! Can we see some videos? I wish I had more money and time for one of these!
|
I'm waiting for the "missing screw" and then I will make a vid.
Still looking for a camera man.......or maybe a camera women? |
Looks awesome Doo !
Can't wait to see some video of your beast. I checked out the build thread on the Baja forum, very nice indeed. |

I got a weight on the truck this morning, 29 lbs fully loaded and ready to rock.
Missing screws should be here no later then Thursday. |
WOAH! 29lbs!!! That is some serious weight! But there is some serious power too! SHould all be good! GET SOME VIDS UP !!!
Just stick it in your mouth like neil likes to do ;) |

http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/r...h_DSCN0399.jpg Can you guess which tires were on the back? Thats after about 1 hour of playing. http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/r...h_DSCN0403.jpg http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/r...h_DSCN0402.jpg If you cant get traction get a bigger tire!!! These are Imex J-dawgs, 8.50 inches tall, 4.50 inches wide. I now have some traction. Wheelies with easy, drives in a straight line, life is fun again. http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/r...DSCN0407-1.jpg Here you can see were the body was rubbing the pavement. I was able to do this with the Proline Trenchers tires. http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/r...DSCN0405-1.jpg I have vids of the truck from tonight running the larger tires. I hope to have more vids tomorrow showing what kind of speeds I'm getting by using a radar gun. |
amazing!!! those aare huge!!! i have some 6.9" moabs and they are heavy!!! these must weigh a tonne... but with that powert i guess you need the weight for stability and traction....
cant wait to see the vids |
Those rims and tires look pretty sweet on there Tim, hope they dont promote axle twist or any probs.
Anxious for some video ! |
here is video of my second run
My 10 year old was taping so go easy on the video please. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDdopwABHR0 Here is a short vid of the second run. We were trying to do some high speed runs, and had a rash at 47 mph (radar) as I was giving the truck more throttle. haha Broke a stock rear a arm in half. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msw1J5HWAtA enjoy Tim |
And I'll say it here, too - nice build.
|
What is wheel base and such?
I like the looks of this one. Sweet build up. |
HOLY CRAP TIM, That thing is nassssssty !
12s yanks thats big beast around like 4s in a Rustler, looks great . |
the wheel base is about 20 inches
truck weight is 30 lbs!!!!! The tires are 8.50 inches tall and 4.50 inches wide. BTW I know this is wrong, BUT the truck is geared for 80 mph....... I have no doubt it would get there if I could keep the front end down. |
Have you contemplated putting a seat on top for one of the kids ? JK

This is the very first vid. Camera guy is a little shacky, but stick with it, there is some good action, lots of rolls and flips, donuts in the grass, dirt and pavement. I do a couple of speed runs toward the end using up all the room I have. This is with the Proline tires which just couldn't hook up. |
I'm planning on installing the new Castle Creations combo as a comparosin between the 12s and 8s setups.
Patrick from Castle said the 12s and 8s setups should have about the same output do to the 8s being able to handle more amps. I will probably move the 12s setup into a Kalee 4x4 baja. That truck will look very much like the HPI baja but have 4 wheel drive, wider wheel track and a touch longer wheel base. I hope to have that project done before spring time. |

Just wondering if there has been any update? Were these vids done using the castle ice hv 160amp esc??? GEARED FOR 80mph!!! in a 30lbs truck!!! With HUUUUGEEE Tyres!!! How was the ESC Coping??? did it get hot? did you take temps? do you have a fan on the esc? I want to run one in my xxl savage wheel base of 17" on 9s... but if this esc can handle your mental setup... im sure it can handle my 17-18lbs truck! Awesome machine! |
Awesome videos dude, and very nice setup...
|
sorry guys, I haven't been paying attention to this thread. Busy on FB. haha
Updates? the truck is apart right now, we are trying to get out from under all the snow here in Michigan. I had big plans of redoing the steering setup. I have all the CAD data, some parts have been remodeled, but I'm currently averaging about 70 hrs a week of regular work, so I'm not real interested in doing anything baja related. I'm using the CC Phoneix 160 HV. No fans on the esc, the Neu motor has a built in fan in the front. I geared it for 80 hoping to "tame" the power, it kind of worked, with the big tires I can drive it now in a straight line under almost full throttle. The stock size tires were a joke to use. Lipos are at about 90 degrees from what I remember, esc is warm, but by no means hot. I do have a temp gun, but didn't use it much because everything is so cool. The ESC will handle your 18lb truck without a problem at all. But remember it doesn't use the car software so it will not drive as nice as the MMM. For the 200.00 I paid for the esc and the performance I get from it (nice big smile every time I drive it) it is worth it. |
when you say it does not drive as nice as with an MMM... how does it really differ? apart no brakes and reverse?
Im just interested in pushing biiiiiggg power through my truck haha |
the Ice doesn't have the nice step over like the MMM for throttle control. Its very drivable, just not as smooth as the MMM. A newbie wouldn't notice but after driving the MMM in all of trucks I could tell right away. The Ice will work for you, get one and get driving.

Will not be till summer. Other stuff needs to be finished before then! |
I'm also thinking that I need a 4x4 1/5 scale truck.
My truck does ok with the big tires on it and locked rear end, but still not a 4x4 truck. |
