Your career field VS Your income VS Geographic location VS $$ Spent on RC
I recently graduated college in central IL with a bachelors in Criminal Justice. Due to the market being horrible (not many police departments or prisons hiring, most just laying people off) I am currently working at the same dollar store I used to prior to college (for less money!).
This information is obviously purely voluntary but I am just curious about what the forum members do for a living (and help me regret my career choice a little more!). A) Where do you live [Northern IL, hour outside of chicago, population of 50k] B) Where are you employed (or in what field) [ Retail Assistant manger, Dollar store] C) How long have you been employed w/ the company? [1.5 years] D) What is your job's income bracket (totally optional, I know its pretty personal) 1) > $20,000 2) > $30,000 [ME, close to option 1 lol] 3) > $40,000 4) > $50,000 5) > $60,000 6) $60-80,000 7) $80-100,000 8) $100,000 + (I hate you a little) E) How much money per month do you spend on "hobbies" every month? -My hobbies include guns, my quad, RC's, electronics and I would say I spend on average 300 a month on that stuff (out of the 1600/month net I bring home lol). |
I take the 5th. My wife might find this thread.
|
A) Devon, England
B) General assistant, Londis grocery store located within grounds of Britannia Royal Naval College C) 4 years & 3 months D) 1) E) Approx £100-150, sometimes more ( I just spent £400 on a custom stock for my airrifle- more on that later... ) , sometimes less. Currently have a list of things I want/need for my flat/apartment: another display cabinet + more airfix kits 37-42" LCD TV new couch PS3 maybe Blu-ray player TV tuner card for my PC 5.1 sound system I had planned on getting some decent equipment to turn my spare room into a mini workshop, but I know so many talented guys with their own equipment already that its just easier to throw money & drawing at them if I cant make the part myself with my hand tools   |
A) Des Moines, IA (central IA)
B) Programmer at the Iowa Lottery (state agency). Mostly, I port old crap software into web-based systems using a SQL back-end. Other than that, I do general IT support. C) ~3.5 years D) ~90k/year. Normally, this is personal info, but since I work for the state, my income is public information anyway... E) Varies. One month, it may be $20, another it may be $0, another it may be $500. Depends on how much cash I have at the moment, what is broken in the house/car/etc, and what currently is grabbing my fancy. Oddly enough, my education only consists of an AAS degree in electromechanical technology. So, pretty much nothing to do what I'm doing now, unless you count a semester or two dealing with PLC's and assembly programming... |
A) Westampton nj, 1/2hr from Philadelphia
B) Where are you employed Disc Jockey, event lighting etc C) 6 Months D) My income is under the table... and very little E) How much money per month do you spend on "hobbies" every month? Probably 50 bucks. |

1.) North of Philadelphia, PA
2.) Senior Scientist at a medical device manufacturer 3.) ~8yrs 4.) Closer to the top than the bottom 5.) I have an acct just for RC stuff and have an auto deposit there of $50/mo. I try to stick to it best I can I have two young kids, so most of my time and money go there. Else towards the house which seems to always have something blowing up. Hence little driving, and my projects have taken forever lately Feel sorry for you younger guys just trying to get established in your careers. I was lucky to get into my career when the eco was still kinda good, and before the housing boom which made houses so expensive and no equity to at least ride on into your next house. Alot of my coworkers have to be married w/ two incomes or live with their parents saving until they are 30 until they have enough money to even think about getting a place on their own. |
A) Where do you live
Slidell, Louisiana, just north of New Orleans B) Where are you employed Own my business, Auto Body and Paint shop C) How long have you been employed w/ the company? Since age 12, 18 years D) What is your job's income bracket Hard to pinpoint this, as there are various "perks" to owning your own business. Certain things that most people pay for out of their pockets get "absorbed". I am on my 2nd house at age 30, but do not have a car note and have no debt other than the house. Lack of cc debt is a main factor for my success, that and dropping out of college at 20 to learn the family business, which I had to buy from the parents. E) How much money per month do you spend on "hobbies" every month? OHHHH, alot or a little. Can vary depending on what hobby I am currently fooling with. Last month I did not spend a dime, this month I am up to a few hundred on rc stuff(first rc purchases this year). I have spent 10k in a few weeks on the gun and motorcycle hobbies... Pick hobbies that give you good returns, rc is not one of them. Used guns and bulk ammo is... Motorcycles are not... |

C) Been a tin knocker for 4 years as an apprentice, 2 days as a journeyman, and been working in a pizza shop for 10 years now. D) the two jobs combined I grossed between 40-50K E) I have no budget, it's whatever I can afford when I want it. Kept track last year and spent about $2500. This year, alot less, from Aug-Oct I spent nothing. Nov I bought a new Savage Flux and a Sidewinder SCT combo(couldn't pass up on this for $60 out of pocket) and I just spent $60 on a set of Turnigy Lipos for the flux. Cool thread.
This is a pretty cool thread. It gives everyone a better idea of what kind of people we are. Its nice to see what some of us do for a living, and at what level of life we are living without getting too personal. Life seems good for a lot of people even with our economy being so bad off. Merry Christmas to all.
Added info as suggested by James. I will turn 52 in Feb/2011. |

A) Where do you live
Under the I-90 Bridges at the bottom of Sunset Hill in Spokane, WA DOB 1/22/1967 (Didn't ask for the DOB but thought it might help exlpain the upcoming ramblings of an old man.) B) Where are you employed (or in what field) System Admim- IT Specialist (The Title seems to changes very often, but the work has steadlily gotten easier allowing me more time to remember WTF they are calling me this week.) in the good old U.S. Government, more specifically (but not really) the DOE, but that's as far as I can discuss it. You understand, National Security or was the Sexaul Harassment. They should hold those training classes on different days. If the neighbors should ask I work for the DEA (M-F) and the ATF on the weekends otherwise they ask if they can get free electricy also (must think I get it free) and help keep the questions about Area 51 and the Grassy Knoll to a minimum. C) How long have you been employed w/ the company? If I remember correclty I think I was 17 when I started there so about 26 years at the same location/DOE but have wore many different hats (and changes of underwear) during that time A story on it own, but there was a breif period of living free (no underwear) but short lived. It just didn't sit well with me or for that matter I didn't sit well without it. Tweenty years ago you never would of convinced me that I would be the typical government (no offense but Postal Employees excluded from typical) employee staring out the window all day wishing I had an Indian Reservation I could put a freaking casino on. Tweenty of those years I was only a contractor for the DOE. Yep, the red headed step-child that was looked down apon, ridiculed, and treated like dirt and made to do the work of others as they laughed an counted the days until retirement. Once I was "Converted" from CFTE to FTE all that changed. Kind of like finally making to your Senior year in Hight School. Your turn to treat the contractors the same. I have to tell you guys I am loving it. lol Anyways it still boils down to just cuz you want to try and earn a paycheck doesn't mean they will let you. Hell, look at the time. I have two breaks I still have to take and use the restroom in the next 4 hours and by the time I am out of the bathroom after my second break is over. It will be time to blow out of this place. Hell, I always tell them. If I do that work today, you wont be seeing me tomorrow. OH, yeah. There was no federally owned computer used in any manner while composing, typing (backspaces included) or posting this information onto any internet weather local or foriegn. How does that go....... Sent from Guys Blackberry. that should cover my ass... D) What is your job's income bracket (totally optional, I know its pretty personal) I read Jeffs and his said "You Hate me." It took a minute but after I thought about. I did start to hate him...lol Misery loves company so..... You guys hate me too. Problem Is I hate me too (sometimes). Hell some people forget I have to pay taxes too. It just pisses me off that I am paying myself to stand around? Talk about a reason not to get out of bed to go in early. Just lay there and get pissed of at yourself and debate the situation. If nothing is broken why can't I just go home? We only get two channels on the tv at work and they just make me sleep. Which any veteran Govt. employee can do with eyes open and shallowed calm breathing. Actually I did my time on the road, every week was heading to different locations. So it is nice that technoligy has finally caught up with my concept of s a stable operation system. Now I can relaxe and let the contractors do my work. Hell, unlike the IRS I can't lie and take your money. Okay I am not sure if the IRS actually needs to lie to take your money but.....I am not actually at the dreaded and hated #8. It's close though, I am talking only 276 miles close. If I was in Seattle where Jeff lives the locallity pay increase would have me driving a big nice TURBO Deseal truck and supporting 3-4 ex wives. Cost of living over here is cheaper and there less stress so we don't get paid more to compensate for the shorter life expectancy. My income actaully is #7 on the bracket, but you guys would hate me if I was more ambitious and lived in Seattle, WA. or typed shorter posts. E) How much money per month do you spend on "hobbies" every month? To be honest I have never paid attention to were all money goes. I use to blame it on booze and women, but putting my wallet under the pillowed made me realize that is wasn't the booze or just one women it was all of them and they were taking it straight from my bank account and not my wallet. Hell talk about unfair, they got half the money and all the pussy. Your suppose to know where you money goes. Help for.... well I forget what but it does help. I am sure it has something to do with a rainy day. Not paying attention is why I am sitting on a real fat nest egg right now. WTF! Where the hell did that nest egg go? I've been putting my pocket change in that oversized BUD Bear bottle for years now. Never once dipped into when I wasn't drinking. So much for early retirement. Damn, if only I had a reservation to put a casino on..... The one thing about long posts is only 1 out of 10 users are going to actaully read it so you can really get a lot off your chest. Almost like throwing a empty bottle in the ocean because... well because it's empty Einstine. Fine print is to tell you that the post is actaully not that long. Just looks longer because I increased the font size. Also, you don't need to read it unless you bored at work. You can pick out the bolded sections to reveal the mystery of Gee. Yes, I know too late...... |
Synical
Well at least we know your synical now. That was a hilarious post Guy. I'm sure it helps to have a very strong sense of humor in order to survive in your line of work, and doing it for the Gov is never easy. You must be a real Hoot to work around. Gald to see you have not stopped visiting with us here on RCM, even if you have decided to get rid of most of your R/C collection. The things we do for women... I sure hope for your sakes that it pays off in big dividends.

A) I live in Colorado
B) back to being an auto mechanic (economy) C) less than a year since I started this job when I lost my last one. D) $80k-$100K (I am a good mechanic) E) I have an $800 per month RC budget, but have been spending ~$1000 getting all the family set up to race on the weekends. P.s. 36, married with 5 kids though 1 has moved out of the house. |
(A) - Guelph, Ontario, Canada, population 130k
(B) - Guelph Transit, transit bus operator (hail da bus driver) I used to work in high paying factory work. The last one was a well known cigarette plant. Really good money there but they closed shop and moved to Mexico. I was 42 at the time and thought that I can't keep working in factories and loose my job every 5 to 10 years because they go belly up or move somewhere else to get some cheap labor. So I thought I should look at what the city I live in has to offer and applied for a bus driver job. They hired me, the fools. So now I drive people around for half the money I used to make but I actually like what I'm doing now. And if I get bored going around in circles then I work overtime on what is called the ''Magic buses''. This was organized by the University of Guelph with the help of Guelph Transit to get the drunk students from Downtown back to the University on the weekends. I should film what goes on in the bus and start a porn website. ''Girls gone wild on the bus''. (C) - 5 years (D) - just a little more than between 4 and 5. With the wife's income, we're at number 8. We're doing ok. (E) - No idea, I should keep track of this stuff I know but I'm scared to know you know. The last build I did was last summer with the brushless LST XXL. Spent 2k in a month on that. Now I just got myself a RC helicopter. Already spent 1.3k on that and it hasn't even flown yet. (F) - Married with one kid (boy) and two little dogs. |
