Buggies and drifting?
I recently got an rc8e and wasn't expecting to have fun drifting with it but I think it could be fun for a little while. I don't really know much about drift set ups so if I could get some direction that would be great!
I've read lots of toe front and back helps and locked diffs is a personal preference. Try and steer with the throttle. What else can I do to make it easier (without a d-box)? Would it be better to be front heavy? Setup is mmm, 1518, 6s A123/5s lipo. I have 4s but that doesn't have much speed with my largest pinion (17t). Here's some footage of the first run- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXNGnTJcMZs It's not really noticable in the vid but I was laying blackies on my driveway:rofl: I think the 35C day temperature helped. http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/pict...&pictureid=780 |
just spool the center diff, i like to take my lighting out drifting and kill off all my old racing tires with style
|
Wow.....drifts pretty well! no suggestions from me, not a huge drifter, haha. But lock the center for sure. :)
|
Just go with really heavy center diff oil. Than practice practice practice. I have a warehouse in the back of my office and when I know it is going to be a slow day I bring this guy to work and put out some obstacles to drift around. Fun when your in limited spaces. Thing about drifting is you steer it into the direction you want, gun it, counter steer to get it in line, than throttle in and out through the turn while counter steering and straightening the wheels. Looks like you pretty much have the idea of it. Oh and one way bearings help a bit. Helps whip out the butt end.

Thanks for the tips everyone. Where do the one way bearings go, Reno? I don't think I need it but just curious. BTW what chassis is under the VW? |

I don't have one in mine, hpi makes them for certain models, I am sure it wont fit in mine. Eventually I will get in there and mod my front diff to allow for a one way bearing. I have drove a buddies hpi with the one way installed and it is super easy to get the rear out and into a drift compared to not having one. Under the bus is an Exceed RC Driftstar, brushless and modified of coarse. Here is a quick demo of one way diff on a Tamiya. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1Rn47PhinQ |
Hey Jas ,good to see you got that going...........this is what happen to my Mugen MBX5R buggy when I converted it to a 1/8 drifter ..I went all the way....

Do you still use it Jason? I don't think I'll go the whole hog like you. I have worn the back tires to slicks now (6-8 packs) and is a little easier to control. I was going to leave the body clear but I couldn't help my self and have made a start on painting:sarcastic: Now I need to hurry up and finish it:whip:
I also have a spare rc8t chassis, that'll convert it to an sc8. Would the longer wheel base make it easier? |
Nah ...sold it to a mate,he now lives in queensland,it was fun on 6s too...scary fast!!!!!
the longer wheelbase will make it easier,I got some 300,000wt diff fliud if you want it ,I used it in all three diffs. I had a SC8e too......they are pretty cool BUT got bored with it ,so sold that too http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/m.../Image0119.jpg |
Previously buggies, sc trucks and 1/10 didn't interest me that much because of the low clearance. I got it mainly to run outside my house. I'm glad I got a buggy, it seems like a versatile platform.
BTW is that my ramp in the background? |
yep.. still got it ,my son uses it alot, cheers mate.....you'll have to bring the buggy next time you come up racing ,you'll find it easier than the truggy as long as you don't over power it...lol

Oh no! You sold the beast Jas? Your mate doesn't want to sell it, does he? I love the way you built that thing? Wanted to build one my self but never got around to doing it. Let me know if your mate wants to sell it. |
This thread made me want to get that one way diff going so I looked into it and Exceed makes one for their MadSpeed Drifter. I ordered one from NitroRCX for like 7 bucks. So even if it doesn't fit since it isn't exactly the same car I am not out too much. I'll post up later once I find out, also try to get some video.

Hey BB ,didn't know you were on here too............I'll ring my mate and find out if he still has it........shorty after he brought it from me ,he had it for sale on RCTECH. |
I was looking around at drift videos and thought this was alright. It's nitro but a well set up car I thought.

Jas, do you remember what wheelbase you ended up with? Car looks good, I may have to pick up some revo shocks to use on my 1/7 on road car, the stockers are too soft and the spring size is weird...

wheelbase was 360mm to suit the kyosho gt2 body.I fabricated the chassis myself. the revo shocks are the way to go, worked really well. |

Hey Jas, looks like you starting to really like this drifting thing. |
Just looking around at how much fun other people have drifting. I don't expect the rc8 to handle like that, though if it is more about the driver's ability then I could spend some time out the front of my house ....um..practicing:whistle:
I tried 6s lipo today. Really enjoyed the power and speed. The car is not tuned in yet so it is not any easier to drift. Chewed up the rear tires too, I know that's part of it but who knows what tire is best bang for buck? |
Some of it is setup, alot is driver skill. A locked or very thick center diff would help as would running fluid that is thicker than an offroad setup in the front. I found lowering the ride height with the downtravel screws and adding a bit of preload to the shock springs helped too. My rc8 had too much body roll in stock form for drifting and street running in general.
The biggie would be tires, something that doesn't have a ton of grip. 1/10th drift tires are generally hard and alot of guys go with pvc pipe wrapped around their wheels or tires. Part of it is cost as PVC pipe is fairly cheap, lasts quite awhile and can make alot of "tires". But also, the more grip the tire has, the higher the speeds and more power you need to drift. I tried a set of Imex rally tires (these http://www.imexrc.com/servlet/the-16...dsh-RIM/Detail ). I didn't want drift tires, but thats basically what I got with these. They were fun and alot more controllable than the PVC tired cars I've driven. They didn't last too long though. I got less than 15 packs out of a set before there were holes in them. Thankfully I got them at my LHS for alot cheaper than the online price. |
These are definitely the best for the buck they don't even balloon buy 2 and u will be set for awhile and there also good for high-speeds!!!!

Not really drift related but I got the paint job mostly finished. Just need to drill holes and change the nose peice. http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/pict...&pictureid=784 http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/pict...&pictureid=785 http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/pict...&pictureid=786 http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/pict...&pictureid=787 |
I ment these sorry http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewi...id=03036430612
|
Nice body, that definitely says drift buggy on it.
I got the one way diff from order on NitroRCX, and go and behold it came with only one output cup. Lame, only 7 bucks so I really dont care. I promise some vids next time I bring it to the office. I'm up in Oregon next week so bare with me. |
Now that its winter its super easy to drift lol :)
Post number 7 is interesting.. I wonder if you can use the towers from a prospec? Right now this is my powder spewing sideways screamer  http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/2632/img4296yn.jpg |
They look like the right tires for spewing powder freeagent.

Near the end of the vid it's running without a body. I was testing a new tire. I managed to retread the rears. I liked the handling with less grip at the back. The retreads are made from strips of rubber I get at work. http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/pict...&pictureid=788 I cut the old tire so the bead remained, making the it level with the ribs on the rim. http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/pict...&pictureid=789 I was trying to give it plenty of glue near the join and, of course, glued my fingers. This pic was taken after the test run. http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/pict...&pictureid=790 http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/pict...&pictureid=791 I think I will still order wheels for the front. |
Outside edge worn down completely after 1 run and inside edge untouched, it looks like you need to dial in more negative camber to maximise your contact patches, slightly strange as I had to dial out almost all of my camber when I went from round buggy tyres to flat on-road tyres.
I wasn't going to post as I'm not a competitive drifter but for what its worth I have an on-road buggy and it drifts like a goodun if I'm not gentle on the sticks. It is setup as thus; camber adjusted so theres even wear across all tyres, rear toe-in reduced considerably though it still has some, 50k front, 100k center, 10k rear diff oils, I was on stock medium springs and if i remember right 40wt front/50wt rear oils, I'm now on hard springs and 70wt front/80wt rear oils but my shocks are laying down MUCH more than they were so do less work for small amounts of wheel movement, ride-height so lower arms are level, Medial Pro Tarmac 2 tyres. |
The tires that were on there didn't show the camber was out too far but they also had inserts. I guess solid rubber will show up the tell tale signs more clearly. I will adjust the down stops so it sits a little lower too.
You reduced the rear toe considerably?? i thought drifters had lots of toe. Thanks for your input anyway. I'll keep playing around with the setup. |
Less rear toe in really helps with on power turn in, meaning you can throw it sideways while accelerating and rely on the slideways action scrubbing off your speed more rather than braking, but go too far and its very hard to go down the straight without fishtailing if you have any wheel slip.
|
Does anyone (RC manufacturers) actually make a 1/8 buggy-sized drift tire/wheel? I haven't really seen anyone build a drift-specific 1/8, they are all 1/10 sedan, so I guess there probably isn't much of a market for them.
Maybe make some out of that black ABS pipe like some do for the 1/10 drift cars if you found the right diameter pipe? |
There doesn't seem to be much specificly for 1/8 drifting does there. I'd like to know if I can buy a spool to fit the rc8? I know I can just lock the diff but it would just be easier to keep track of whats in the car at a glance.
|
Quite frankly who wants to spend the time and money BL converting an 1/8th scale then put on plastic tyres and go round at 5mph because you have no traction? Only little girls like the one in pinkpanda's avatar who should be left to their >1/10th scale toys, thats who! You may as well have saved your money and used a 27t 540 motor/ tamiya ESC and 6 cell NiMh pack.
Fortunately you are not that little girl, you came to RCMonster and did a BL/LiPo conversion that has enough power to make a mockery of any tires, so stick your hand down your shorts, check you have a pair, say to yourself "Real men drift on RUBBER!" then go outside and see how fast you can get round that corner sideways. 1/8th scale on-road buggys/GT cars/RallyGame cars whatever you want to call them are practically made for drifting, even the IC RTR ones have bigger engines with enough torque to step the back out at speed, lots come with spools or 2 speeds and no CD, have a look at some videos on youtube, I bet you find more drifting in car parks than using a grip style around them, and all on rubber. I've never really looked at AE's range, spares aren't available enough over here but if they havent come out with an 1/8th on road yet it is doubtful they will have a centre spool available, however depending on the size of the diff you may be able to fit either the Hot Bodies or Ofna spools in with a little shimming, Kyosho used a 2 speed not a spool and most of the proper rallygame MFGs use belt drive so they are the only 2 1/8th scale spools I know of. |
Fair comment nativeboy but it doesn't stop one from wondering if there is a purpose made tire. I was hoping for something that would be longer lasting. I know chewing the tires is all part of drifting but I am also not interested in pvc pipe or whatevers... I guess foamies won't last either? What's with the real men BS? I know countless that think real men only play with 1:1 cars. Anyway glad to know a real man likes my avatar :na:
I have already ordered 6 sets(4) of the tires mac3194 suggested. They seemed cheap and were recommended. So there is only 2 spools to look at ,thanks. I'll see if i can make one fit. |
Report back on those Ebay tires after you get a chance to run them. I have some of the off-road ones from the same seller (Badlands and Caliber clones), and they are OK for bashing. Rubber compound is probably a bit firm for racing.
Now that my Jammin is converted to on-road I think I might try some of the slicks from them. I really wish they had a treaded radial on-road tire, but the slicks should be fine too. |
I got to try them out yesterday for speed runs. 6s is crazy with 25/47 for drifting there good for 3s and 4s but with higher voltage ur just gonna spin out to easy but I think that has to do with my locked diff..
|
What kind of speeds did you get them up to? How were they as far as ballooning and also the balance?
|
Theye were pretty well balanced and there was only about 1/2 inch Of ballooning but I could barely tell because i was going pretty damm fast lol maybe about 60-70mph on 6s
|
Lunch video in the warehouse, Iphone video and no camera man but hey it works.
