Homemade Brushless Baja 5B style Buggy
Ok guy's i built this about 5 months ago.
It's based on a Muggy with a stretched chassis to meet 1/5th scale length, I picked up a Muggy as a roller and the idea started from there. ESC = Hobbywing 150amp Motor = CC 1717 lipo's = 3s 5000mah in series http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...c/IMG_0266.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...c/IMG_0264.jpg And this is where it all started...... http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101189.jpg |
Looks very nice - more pics please - show us how you did it.
:great: |
That thing is wicked! Looks like 2wd from the photos, why not 4wd? I know the Baja is only 2wd but with the muggy platform why not? Nonetheless a great job.
|
Definitly very cool, nice job. And yes, show us more of it!
|
Thanks guy's yes many more photo's and video's to come. Definantly 4wd guy's.....
|
Here is the front of the chassis
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101197.jpg The back of the chassis http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101194.jpg The centre diff mounted http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101196.jpg Front mounted up http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101198.jpg Some close up's http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101201.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101202.jpg The Baja rear bumper mounted http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101208.jpg |
Starting to take some shape at this stage
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101212.jpg The muggy link is as you can see very thin and easy to bend so i made my own link, much bigger. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101215.jpg The rear tower was very short so i got one that straightens the shocks out http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101219.jpg |
HHHhhhmmmmm bearings much better
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101228.jpg Mounts for the front of the boll cage http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101237.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101240.jpg much bigger than my truggy http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...1020101243.jpg |
Wow,very nice build,is it just 2wd? Why not keep the muggys 4wd?
|
Looks like its 4WD to me. You can see the rear drive shaft and the extended front drive shaft.

Very cool, I like the stance of it and the fab work is awesome.
|
Ok motor fitted up
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...c/IMG_0105.jpg Some lights http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...c/IMG_0144.jpg |
Sitting next to a real baja 5B
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...c/IMG_0239.jpg |
The front alloy prop shaft did't last long so a 12mm steel one now sits in it's place.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...c/IMG_0558.jpg Got a 33kg servo that can handle up to a 3s lipo from HK for about $80 delivered. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...c/IMG_0512.jpg |
Lipo's brackets done.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...c/IMG_0559.jpg I mounted the ESC on the underside of the roof, it's out of the way and the wires are much neater coming down to meet the battery's and motor http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b5...c/IMG_0515.jpg |
I'm curious, how did your first driveshaft fail? (Mine has held up well)
|
That's not a bad idea! :)

This is what RC-Monster is about, that is an awesome build.
How much does it weigh rtr? |
This thing is definitely awesome. I have had great luck with those Turnigy HV Titanium servos so far. I run the 2S version, HV767.

15.4lbs... not bad, my Savage conversion was about a pound heavier.

I would rather have one like yours than a real baja, much cooler, lighter, BL, and 4wd!

Thanks mate it is pretty awesome, I got a lot satisfaction in building it and it's great feeling when your driving it knowing you built it.
|
Wow man!! That thing is awesome!! Why haven't you come to Rc-Monster sooner?
Great build I love it! |

IMO your Baja looks much more cooler than a real one! Great job! You might want to replace the stock shock for a aluminium one, Losi (and other companys) have got nice anodized shocksfor LST/muggys. |
What shock tower is that? And I'm guessing the bulkheads are losi muggy?
Very nice work. |
very nice indeed. I have always wanted to do a 5th scale conversion using a truggy as a base...been thinking about it for 3 yrs... I may have to rekindle the idea.

Great looking build... Love the use of the muggy platform combined with the cage and wing, very sharp looking! Should be a beast :intello:

This is the first run out the front of my house, just a quick test to see if everything is working.

Love the build, great looking buggy.
|
Looked at a few of your vids - nice - may want to tape those front tires, though!
Questions: What top-speed are you geared for? Have you done much suspension tuning to dial in the handling? -brian |
Yeah i know it's crazy, i put very thick oil in the centre diff too.
i never geared it for any sort of speed i just went concervative to see how all the temps were and i haven't felt the need to change anything yet. it's got the muggy centre diff and a 15 tooth pinion. No suspension tuning yet but i'm looking at getting some raven dual rate springs, not sure what oil yet. the buggy wieghs 6kg rtr but i'm thinking of fitting in one 6s lipo along with the other 2 3s lipo's and run it parallel with the 3s lipo's for longer run times this would bring the wieght up to around the 7kg mark. |
Well since a stock LST is around 5kgs and uses 30wt oil, I'd suggest 40 or 45wt to start with.
