Helpful tools that get overlooked/forgotten

It's safe to say most of us have hex drivers, needle-nosed pliers, and other common hand tools. But what other helpful tools do you have that you think others often forget or overlook? The kind of things that aren't absolutely necessary, but can make a task much easier.

I have some extra room in my RC toolbox, looking to add some things I may have missed.

i find i use my locking multigrips alot, they are great for shock shafts and other things that you need to hold tight but can't do yourself.

_paralyzed_ 03.03.2011 05:51 AM

I have a little square magnetizer/demagnetizer. Sometimes you just don't want something magnetized and sometimes you do.

It works great to hold screws to go in blind holes.

bigsteel 03.03.2011 07:13 AM

Well, most don't have have gassers here but my piston stopper is the best specialty tool. Trying to take off an old clutch or flywheel is crazy hard without one.
For everything else it's probably my (can't wait for the jokes about this) flexi-shaft driver. Yes,it's actually called that and it's awesome for small scale wrenching.

Yeah, but I can reach spots that most on here could Never dream of

It all depends

It all depends on what you consider useful. I have several tools in my toolbox that are not used every day, but are very useful when they are needed. Some of them also come in many different versions or brand names. Here are a few goodies one should not be without.

The screw extracter set is a good one Jerry. I have one or two ezy-outs but almost never use them as I opt for the dremel.

Josh did you find that elusive spot with your tool? Gee! :yipi:

vader2728 03.03.2011 09:46 AM

Patience. My best "tool"...

bigsteel 03.03.2011 09:51 AM

After about 20 mins of mindlessly fumbling around I managed to get it

A body reamer is a very handy tool. Dynamite makes the best I have seen.

Dental pic set is also very handy.

Not sure if these are "tools" but I have a nice set of cylinder shaped brushes (like giant pipe cleaners) in nylon, brass and stainless steel. They come in very handy for cleaning stuff.

Tamiya make anti scratch channel lock-like pliers. Those have come in handy more than once.

_paralyzed_ 03.03.2011 11:22 AM

I'd have to say Lincpimp. He has such a wealth of knowledge to share, and he's the biggest tool I know!

TexasSP 03.03.2011 11:25 AM

The little traxxas T wrench that comes in there RTR's is one of my favorites. I use it quite often on all my vehicles.

E-Revonut 03.03.2011 12:01 PM

A dremel is a must if you don't already have one! I don't use it all that often but it's a lifesaver when I do use it.

I also always have a chunk of 2x4 laying around, I have a couple holes drilled in it for holding bullets upright while soldering, I do all my soldering on or over it to prevent burning my work bench. It also doubles as a car stand for my carpet car, it has been very useful many times in many different ways.

I use that one a lot too TexasSP, I also super glued a short 2mm hex driver in one of seldom used stubby holes on the side. It works great for pinion grubs.

Alcohol swab pads obviously work great for prep cleaning for stickers and Velcro application, also wipes permanent marker off the peel and paint mask and a great antiseptic wipe for injuries.

MR.CLEANŽ MAGIC ERASERŽ ORIGINAL These work good (with some elbow grease) for cleaning the black asphalt smudges off of r/c bodies after sliding for hundredths of feet on their roof.

HobbyKing Velcro by the meter I use it to mount ESC, Rx, UBEC, Cameras and GPS units. Too bad it only comes in blue.

Although, I don't see you using most these items a whole lot at the track they have been handy r/c supplies for me.

I meant beefy cause I am a beefcake!!! Now get in the kitchen and make me some pie!!!

Harold would have to tie a pork chop around his neck to get a dog to play with him. Even peanut butter will not work for him. last time he tried he got the dogs tail under his right wheel and the dog bit down...

I exercise patience but it's more of a 'have to' wait for parts.

You could use the dremel to cut slots in the screw head and use a flat head screwdriver if you think it's going to strip.

It took you 20mins!?:gasp: I would have lost interest by then.

If I'm doing a lot of cutting with the dremel I will often use a 4" grinder to do the bulk of the work. Along with that - a file and sandpaper. Tappers for threading and rethreading holes. Calipers.

Nah,it took a double dose but linc was good and passed out. He should check for pills in the next pie I make him.:gasp:

florianz 03.08.2011 06:12 AM

double sided sticky tape, the heavy duty stuff. I've mounted rx, esc with it. the esc is right on the chassis, for a low cog. never caused any problems.

these screw removers are great, surprisingly it works:

a small gas lighter to get screws removed, which are secured with loctite
http://www.conrad.de/ce/de/product/8...archDetail=005

gripping pliers are always good to have.

Useful tools

VELCRO is a must have.

I also use a small propane torch for doing hot work like shrinkwrap stuff.

A small drill press is also a nice tool to have around the shop.
