FlySky GT3B 2.4ghz radio system

1st off, this is a 35 dollar radio system. I got mine from hobbypartz.

Came in today, here is my impression of the system right out of the box.

Build quality is not as good as my M11 but close. I would say it is built as well as a futaba 2pl/3pm radio. Nicer than a cheap am rtr unit. Feel in the hand is great, nice spring weight to the steering wheel and throttle trigger. The buttons click well, they are a bit shiny (almost chrome look) for my tastes. Menu navigation is easy, the screen lights up when you push a botton and after 15 sec or so it dims down (to conserve power?). I had read this was a difficult screen to see when in the sun, but I think it is fine.

The receiver is tiny, about the size of a spektrum 3100, but less than half the thickness. Build quality looks very good on the receiver, and you can use the cheap HK/HC branded rx with this radio. Thats right, rx that cost 7 bucks.

Bench tested it with 3 servos. Powered the receiver with a ccbec, set for 6.5v. Everything works fine, and the transmission speed is very quick. I recetly played with a dx6 radio and this sytem is much quicker than the dx6.

I did notice that the trims do not cover a wide range, others have mentioned this too. So one may have to mechanically setup their servos more than with other radios. Other controls appear to work as normal.

The 3rd channel is setup as a full servo travel. Trim and reversing is provided for the 3rd channel. Operation is via a button, click once and servo travels from one endpoint to the other, click again and it goes back. Not any use for rear steer as it does not center, but would work fine for engaging a reversing tranny or to shift an emaxx.

I will set it up in my 2wd pede and get some wheel time on it this afternoon.

bruce750i 03.03.2011 04:31 PM

Be easy on the reverse/brake trigger finger its not supported on the back side. I broke my reverser tang off. (Damn my fingers muscles of steel!)
You'll find it will beat the name brand in distance and no more rx brown outs. I tried switching back to speky with a M11, but it was so top heavy and the $50 rx's were dropping connection(mmp) too often at the track, it lasted a week.

Have you got a link, Lincpimp?

edit: me picking up Linc's slack, AGAIN http://www.hobbypartz.com/79p-gt3b-carradio-lcd.html butt they are out of stalk

lincpimp 03.03.2011 05:30 PM

Hmm, must have go the last one!!! Thanks for the link muffinpants.

I also have a m11, but have only used it with novak synth module and rx. I did use spektrum stuff with my m8 and never had an issue. I have heard alot of people have problems with the spektrum stuff recently. Must be a QC issue?

snellemin 03.03.2011 05:41 PM

Looks cool. Amazing what you can get with little money these days.

bruce750i 03.03.2011 06:25 PM

These Tx need a "On" status L.E.D. added. Yeah, and my spectrum stuff was getting old being used for five years also.

It really is. I paid right at 100 bucks for my 2pl futaba 75mhz crystal radio about 5 yrs ago. And this radio seems to be built just as well, and has more features and is 2.4ghz. And the rx are 7 bucks. Bet I paid close to 40 for the futaba rx and xtal, and i had about 8 of those.

I did notice that they do not have an on led. Seem to work just fine.

brainanator 03.04.2011 12:40 AM

glad to hear another good review. this will be my next radio system whenever I need to get a new one! :)

lincpimp 03.04.2011 01:38 AM

Ok, hooked it up to my 2wd pede. Running a 2070 servo and a sidewinder sc system on 3s.

Had to reverse ch1 for the steering, no biggie. Even though the trim range is a bit mimited I was able to set the trim without having to fool with the servo saver position or adjust the turnbuckles.

Now on to getting the sidewinder to calibrate, I had to reverse ch2 and it calibrated just fine.

Control is very good, both steering and throttle. I can say the transmission speed is very good, better than the m11 running synth 75mhz fm. Smooth controls, feel is excellent. I really could not beleive how nice this radio feels and works. Handle ergonomics are great, balance and weight (even with 8aas) are nice too. Much lighter than the m11, feels about the same weight as a tq radio with any batteries. Yeah, it is light.

Great radio, works great, has enough features for a sport system. Receivers are cheap, which its biggest selling point.

Will I sell my m11? No, cause I need a 4 channel radio like it to run mech brakes on my larger projects. But I will be selling all of my spektrum stuff, as it is only 3 channel.

lincpimp 03.12.2011 10:59 AM

Upgraded to lipo!!! Very easy, split the radio halves, and you can unplug the wire going from the battery tray. It just plugs into the main pcb. I soldered on a female servo plug, and added some wvelcro to hold the 3s lipo in place. I am using the 1450mah tx pack that HC sells. The remote is feather light now.

Still waiting on the HC receivers. I went std shipping so I have another week or so to wait.

Even with the lipo I will have less than 70 bucks in this radio with 6 receivers... Smoking deal.

Bet I sold 500 bucks worth of my old radio gear already and have another couple hundred to go. Time to buy a new gun!!!

magman 03.12.2011 12:36 PM

Wonder if these rx will work with the Spektrum radios? If they will, that would be nice....

simplechamp 03.13.2011 05:18 AM

There was a discussion going on about that at RC Tech. I'm 99% sure someone tried it and it didn't work. If it did work I'm sure the news would have spread like wildfire.

lincpimp 03.13.2011 05:25 AM

Yeah, they do not work with spektrum radios...

But from my experience these radios are faster than dsm2 spektrum...

I prefer remotes that take 8AA now that I have a couple Tx lipos from turnigy. Lipo seems to last forever in a transmitter!

Yep, they do last a long time. My m11 has a 2800mah lipo in it. I did not use it for 1 yr and have not charged it for the last 4hrs of use and it is still over 11.4v.

silentbob343 03.14.2011 04:01 AM

One guy was claiming he noticed it was slower to respond to his inputs compared to his other system. He was unable to make a section on his track with the flysky that he could with his regular tx/rx. Anybody run into similar performance issues?

Also in the the same rctech thread they figured out how to reprogram the tx, might be able to fix expo now and make other changes

lincpimp 03.14.2011 09:32 AM

Well, I am comparing it to the spektrum setup i had for my m11 and m8 radio. The flysky is faster to respond. Not a huge amount, but it is noticeable.

mjderstine 03.14.2011 10:31 AM

i got one of these on order with 3 RX's. i hope to have the delivery this week. i am going to love the thing. I watched all the reviews i could on youtube and there was nothing bad to be said about it.

i just wish when i order more rx's that i wouldn't have to wait 3-4 weeks for them to arrive.

Where did you get yours from?

Yea, I am waiting on my addl rx, but for 7 bucks each and 4 dollars shipping from hong kong I really cannot complain. I may have to order more, I have all 6 spoken for. I am digging out old rc cars now, given the price drop to get bl systems in them it seems a waste to not run them.

snellemin 03.14.2011 11:14 AM

Anyone have a Nomadio to see if the RX's work with it.

mjderstine 03.14.2011 12:02 PM

i got the system from this seller.
rcworldwide.com.hk

its one of the places that sells the item for $1 and then you pay lots of shipping, its all the same in the end though. i am just antsy to get them. my SC truck needs some life. since i sold my airtronics to fund this new system all my rc's have been staring at me like a dog that hasn't been walked in weeks.

Yeah, the resolution is remarkable, considering the price. 2.4ghz is getting to be old tech, so it makes sense the prices should come down. I think this company could easily make a 50 dollar setup that would equal a m11 or dx3r in feel and features.

mjderstine 03.15.2011 03:42 PM

i saw where some guy replaced the spring in the wheel because he wanted stiffer feed back in his.

you could always make it "feel" better in your hands with some hockey tape and lead weight to give it a more solid feel. just spit bawlin here.

hey linc, you got a "eh'hem" link for that 3 cell battery you were able to fit in the bugger?

brainanator 03.15.2011 11:05 PM

pretty sure it's this one: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idProduct=9787
(I use them, have 2 :))

The link above is the one I used. Nice fit, used some sticky back velcro to hold it in, and some foam between it and the battery door.

I actually like the feel, it is comfortable and very light.

I may give the tennis racket tape a try, see how it does.

_paralyzed_ 03.16.2011 12:29 AM

If someone could link to a <$40 with shipping site when they become available that would be swell.

Hobbyking's price is $30. I will be notified when they are back in stock and will post here.

emaxxracer15 03.16.2011 05:02 PM

hobbypartz has it for $35 shipped. I got mine from them and think its an unbeatable combo for the price. However, they seem to always be out of stock.

yep, that info is in post #2

KaztheMinotaur 03.16.2011 08:08 PM

I converted mine to LiPo also. I'm using a 800mah 3S LiPo that I also got from hobbypartz.com It is a little thick for the battery compartment but i fits. Getting over 3 hours battery life.

I took a look around, and the 1450 lipo from hobbyking seems to be the best deal going for a tx lipo.

I need something to fit my dx6, but I think I will spend the money to do the Dimension Engineering voltage reg swap. I have 2 nimhs for that tx and they are a very weird size. Looks like 8 aaa cells, arranged in 2 tacked bricks of 4. Very odd size, something like 24mm square by 100mm long.

radioman193 03.18.2011 09:23 PM

i got 3 cell 2800mAh 20C in mine over 6 hours of runtime and drop to 10.4v .

KaztheMinotaur 03.19.2011 07:05 AM

I would have prefered to use that 1450 LiPo also but it was on back order and I was placing an order from hobbypartz anyway. The 1450 doesn't appear to be as think so it probably fits better.

radioman193 03.19.2011 09:28 AM

i just took my 3S lipo apart and it fits Sweetly.

hobbyking is outta stock on the battery...

anyone know anywhere else to get one? :(

Chadworkz 03.22.2011 11:22 PM

eBay has them pretty often...there are a ton of Zippy & Turnigy LiPos on there right now. Do a search and see what you can find!

KaztheMinotaur 03.23.2011 05:57 AM

Hobbypartz has a 1000mah Sky LiPo that might fit.

mjderstine 03.23.2011 09:15 AM

thanks guys, found one from CA, its bout twice the cost, but shipping is 10 times faster than HK. that's worth it to me sometimes.

my transmitter should be delivered today!

reno911 03.23.2011 11:04 AM

I wanted to get this guy, but since they were out of stock I went for the 20 dollar FS-GT2 and it seems to be a very capable radio.

I am excited about the size of the Receiver, really small.

Down the line I might pick up one of these when they become available again.

snellemin 03.23.2011 11:22 AM

I'm going to get me one when they become available as reaction/resolution improvement had been mentioned. My Nomadio and Airtronics are 100hz and old spektrum is 50hz frame rate. I see a 500hz bandwidth in the specs of the FlySky. 35 Bucks is worth a try in my pan cars.
