3/10/11 Hawaii Tsunami Warning
The State of Hawaii is currently on a Tsunami Warning due to a massive earthquake in Japan.
quoting the Civil Defense announcement: Quote:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE5XmgVirYs Anyone else in Japan/Hawaii, be careful you guys...it's hell outside right now. Half-mile long backups everywhere for gas and emergency supplies...if it doesn't sound that impressive, consider that Hilo has a population of only 50,000. |
Holy crap batman.
HOLY CRAP are you serious? 8.8 magnitude?? Hey Lito whats the story over there in Japan where you are? Are you OK? Well we sure hope that there are no Tsunamis to wory about. Good luck there in Hawaii. Our son is presently attending school at The University of Hawaii. Keep us posted.
|
my condolences to anyone effected!
|
Holy crap!!!!:gasp: I just saw the announcement of earthquake. Japan is totaly messed up.:oh:
|
My wife's family seems to be in a safe area so I am happy about that but it sounds like there will be a high death toll from this. I heard people have been washed away. I am sad to hear this and hope the casualties are at a minimum but from the seens on the tv it looks very serious.
|
There are already 60 deaths confirmed.

Jerry, I'm doing okay here on the ship. I have duty today so I can't go home. So far, nothing was damage on base but it was pretty scary. The quake lasted almost a minute long and there were plenty of aftershocks. The tsunami was only about 6 feet on base but the northern part of Japan wasn't as lucky. They were inundated with 23-foot waves and I could just watch in amazement how fishing boat, trucks, cars and houses were swept by the waves. My family is doing okay but they were scared and shaken bad. It sucks because I can't go home and console them especially the kids. It doesn't help either living in the 8th floor of a high rise tower. Were about 41 miles southeast of Tokyo.
Thanks for the concern. Now, it time fior me to go on a 4-hour Officer of the Deck watch. I can't wait until I get home tomorrow. |
Good to hear.
It is good to hear that you and your family are OK Lito. Duty comes first, and I know that well Chief. I was lucky enough to never get to stand an Officer of the Deck watch in over 20 years. Once I made E-6 I stood duty Chief and once I made Chief I was Engineering Officer of the day for my duties. At least you can go home in the morning after your section is relieved to give everyone a big hug. We still do not have any TV system hooked up here, so I have not seen any news in over a week. We should be able to get our hands on an AFN receiver in a week or two, so we can at least get to watch Fox News, BBC, and CNN. I hate being out of touch with whats going on in the world. Glad to hear your OK Chief.
|
well Hawaii is okay, fortunately only minimal damage. Thoughts go out to everyone affected in Japan, they really got devastated.
|
So anyone have any info on the 2 reactors over there that collapsed? Man I hope they are OK
|
On line news
Well from all of the on line news that we have read through so far it does not look good. One reactor has already had some leakage, but so far it was minimal. The reactor is normally cooled by purified/distilled water in a closed system which is very well controlled, but after some damage they have had to revert to using seawater pumped from the near by ocean as an emergency cooling medium. As long as they can keep the water flowing and the rods covered things are good to go, but if cooling fails all together there would be a meltdown, and more than likely a pretty big explosion. It could end up much like the disaster in Chernobyl, Russia, which resulted in an area of about 30-40 square miles being a barron waste land. Everything within that circle will die and be contaminated for approx 100 years or more.
This is a very serious matter. The scariest thing is that a ploom of nuclear radiation could leak into the atmosphere and travel hundreds of miles or more poisoning everything in its path. If two reactors end up this way simotaniously within the same region it could be comepletely disasterous for the entire island of Japan and its nearby neighbors. We should all be saying some kind of prayers for everyone affected by this situation. It is quickly becoming an internation responsibility to resolve whatever problems there are looming from this very large Earthquake and Tsunami. The people of Japan will need help on every level to get out of this mess. The French who from what I am reading set these reactors up in Japan are already ordering all of their people out of Japan for their own safety. |
I believe in our worlds nuclear specialists in that they can contain these reactors.but all they need is one slip up and a 100 hundred square mile radioactive plume flies over japan and California, like the world economy could withstand one of the largest tech producers and one of the biggest breadbaskets in the world collapsing.
|
Adding to the chaos.
I also just read that Japan has declared states of disaster in six of its nuke plants as of about an hour ago. The official death toll now stands at about 1400. I am sure with the level of devistation it will take weeks for their efforts to reach final numbers and figure out exactly what level of damage has been done. The estimates I just saw may equal somewhere near $65billion in just insured damages.
|
Todays news reports
We finally saw some of the news videos that show entire towns being washed out to sea. It is devistating just to think of what these poor people had to endure. The news said that yesterday off one of the towns worst hit they found over 1000 bodies along the seashore. There is a report of a second explosion at one of the Nuke plants, but that the radiation levels were within exceptable limits so there was no danger of major leakage. The videos are just painful to watch.

This might help with the reactor understanding?

Gastly stuff happening everywhere at the moment. It's almost hard to absorb the magnitude of suffering by those affected
|
|
Natures wraith, man kinds mistakes.
You could not have read this stuff in a book. Not one, but four simultanious "Three Mile Islands" happening in the same location. It just keeps getting worse and worse. I am surprized that American families have not been ordered out of the area yet? What are they waiting for? There are aspects about this disaster that are inevitable, and although prayers are in order they are not going to stop what is happening there. This is a man made catastrophy sparked by nature that only has one end. The best that anyone can hope for at this point is that the containment structures hold in the major levels of radiation. BUT there are already high levels of radiation escaping that will cause great health issues for the entire public of Japan that are being picked up 150 miles away. God bless all who are in the path of this disaster. I pray that the weather along with the efforts of the local workers trying to keep this at bay are successful. A lot of lives are depending on these factors.
As if things were not already bad enough with the quake damage and the aftermath of the tsunami, which has taken thousands of lives already. The AP has just posted reports that Japan has already run out of body bags, and has requested help from funeral homes world wide. Officials in Sri Lanka have stated that if the death toll is below 10,000 that it will be a miracle. It seems more likely to be quite a bit higher. The Tsunami of Banda achie took nearly 250K. From reports some people had only ten minutes notice to get out and move to higher ground, and the waves took thousands of homes into the sea in just 30 minutes time from three different cities. This is truly a sad day for man kind. |
A triple shot of mass disaster. Earthquake, tsunami, nuclear.
I have a very real fear for my in-laws well being. To have 3 explosions I don't think there will be a realistic chance of not having a melt-down. They are running on sea water at the moment but their systems are designed to run purified water. There will be so much maintenance to run salt-water not just because it is corrosive but I bet there is a high amount of silt and impurities to help the degradation. They have finally admitted the situation is dangerous, that from the Japanese Govt. indicates they are in deep $Hit. There are reports some of the US navy have a thin layer of radioactive dust on the ship. (Lito I hope that's not you). Even if the navy can help for a time I think resources are going to be limited. Patching up 3 reactors at once and preventing further disaster will be a miracle and honestly I don't think possible. With radiation already detected in Tokyo it won't take long to affect the whole country - it's not that big and a plume of radiated steam has already been let of. I spoke with Misato (wife) and told her I want her family to come here with us in Aus. She said it's not that easy to just up and leave when things might not seem that bad in the province where they are. I am very solomn today. |
More bad news
Well I have already posted this in the other Tsunami thread but they also stated today that there is more trouble looming in the midst. As if things were not already bad enough dealing with losses from the very large quake, followed by a tsunami that wiped out three entire cities, now the local Gov just stated that they have a storage facility in which they place what they call "Spent" fuel rods once they have reached their maximum usage/potential for power generation. Well this pool is also normally supplied with cooling water 24/7/365 just like the rest of the system. Well there has been no cooling water supplied since the quake. The last time it was checked was on Friday at 186f, and now they cannot get close enough to doublecheck it. The fear is that from what they are able to see from a distance is that the water is already boiling off and the rods will also soon be exposed as well. So this will add another meltdown porblem for them to deal with in an already somewhat hopeless situation.
I do believe that there is really not much of anything that they can do at this point to stop any of these reactors from completely melting down and contaminating the entire area. The only question left to ask will be how large of an area will be affected and for how long? For those of you who are familiar with the "Three Mile Island" scinario this is the exact same situation times four in one very tight location. This may very well reduce the already tiny islands capabliity for supporting its population for a very very long time (150 years or more?). What a mess. Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this man made, nature sparked tragity. May God watch over this and help people find peace. |
This is terrible!!! I dont know what to say! My prayers go out to them!
|
Man, it just goes from bad to worse doesn't it? To see whole communities decimated like that, and that's "just" from the quake and tsunami. I really hope the nuclear issue can be nullified.
|
Wow, another quake in Japan. this one in Honshu (~72 miles SW of Tokyo).
|
really??? nothing on the news yet
|
It's on CNN, but just a headline right now with no details. I saw some mention of it on FB as well.
|
Another quake
Lito had made a comment about it over on the UE forum earlier today. He said it was a 6.6 Magnitude aftershock that lasted about half a minute. The more this keeps up the more weary people will get about their outcome. It is like slowly torturing someone. He was shaken, but seemed ok. The reports from the predictors of these things say that it will go on for some time and that they may even have a bigger quake in the next few weeks or months. Japan used to be a prime place to live looking at it from an international perspective. I would think that Alaska is looking better right now.

It's 530 Wednesday morning and I woke up to another powerful aftershock. This is very stressfull.

Hang in there chief.
Hang in there Chief. One day at a time just like you tell your patients. Two years from now this will all be a story that you get to share with friends, and relive with your kids after they have forgotten all about it. Tomorrow is going to come whether we are ready for it or not. Forget about the things that we cannot control, and concentrate on those you can change. Now you can tell the wife that she knows what it feels like to get her sea legs. Smile:intello:

16/march/2011 update.
I just watched a fox news report with a Greta Vansustrin update. It is around noon here in Prague. The Japanese Gov has pulled all of the workers off the power plant due to the impending expectations of nuclear fallout. It was stated that one of the reactors has suffered a breach in all three of its containment walls releasing radioactive material directly into the atmosphere, which will be carried on the winds to surrounding nations. The team was ordered to evacuate the entire area leaving it in God's hands now. All of their efforts have failed and there seems to be little hope of any kind of resolve for this catastrophy. They have finally announced that Japan would like to have US military assistance, but it may just be too late for that. The stroage pool that caught fire last night near reactor #3 is now leaking radioactive material into the soil, ocean, and will eventually contaminate the sealife, drinking water and and plant life in the region. A very large portion of Japan will soon become uninhabitable by any form of life for at least the next 100 years. I would guess that the next move is for international resources to gather and try to find a way to contain the area and reduce the eminent envronmental disaster that now threatens the globe, because of the plants location right on the edge of the ocean. this is no longer just a japan problem. It is everyones problem. Welcome to hell on Earth.
|
What the hell is the military going to do? We've been running supply trips and evacuation since this all began, the only thing we could do is help clear the fallout areas. They would have to demolish the reactors containment and then try to re-contain the nuclear material in a new vessel.this is so not going to end well for japan, china is probably laughing there ass off right now...
|
This is terrible news!!!!
|
should have
Japan should have requested assistance with cooling the reactors when this whole feasco began on Friday. Saturday at the latest. I could see ships anchored off shore pumping in seawater to help keep things cool, but now there is little anyone can do.
Anyone within a few miles of this plant now risks radiation poisoning that could surely kill them. I am not so sure that China is laughing since their shores are right across from Japan. The fallout will blow which ever way the wind carries it, and that will surely be to China & Korea on given days. This disaster is far from overwith. Covering the vessels will only do so much, but radioactive material will still leak into the soil and contaminate the surrounding area to some degree. This will leave the chances of rain water leaching contamination into the sea, and eventually into drinking water over a very large area. I am not sure what can be done at this point, but there will be a very involved consortium of some kind brought together to find a reasonable solution that the entire world order will be happy with. At least Chernobyl was landlocked, and posed little threat to surrounding water supplies. This is a seriously scary scinario. |
Does anyone know if the fallout would reach Cali? Prevailing winds would carry it to our western shores, china and Korea are somewhat safe. But at some pOint we will have to go in and start to clear it out and dig up the nuclear material,it's literally the only way to stop it from getting worse. Nothing much we can do about the soil and water that is already polluted though.
|
Prevailing winds?
Well prevailing winds can do all sorts of things, but there are a lot more factors involved then just wind. Percipitation and wind patterns will have a lot to do with how it moves about the planet. Anything is possible. Look at what just happened with this quake and tsunami. No one would have ever guessed that a wave that big would engolf entire cities in Japan, but that is exactly what happened. Sure during most of the year the winds do tend to travel west to east over the aian region, but during a few months every year the winds change direction and Korea is a hell of a lot closer to Japan then Cali is. Less distance means higher level of radiation, because it will disapate the further it has to travel.
I do not even think that digging up a nuclear reactor is posssible once it has been breached. The radiation levels would be much too high for any kind of machinery to be driven close enough to do any work. The driver would be dead inside of 20-30 minutes. It would be a suicide mission at that. Who is going to volunteer? Unless they do it all remotely with remote controlled equipment. That would be a serious project and more than likely making history in inovation. Anyway the way these things are built it is like a huge bunker with a bank vault cemented right into the center of it. The reactor is a huge vessel of enormous weight that is built in sections just so it can be installed. So what your suggesting might be possible, but I am not sure how they would do it. This is why Chernobyl was barracaded and burried. No one could get close enough to do anything with it. Even the guys who were volunteered to go in and burry the site could only work for like 7 minutes, which exposed them to a life time dosage of radiation. If they stayed any longer than 7 minutes they would die within days or weeks from radiation poisoning. |
Thinking about it,I have no idea how long a NBC suit can withstand high doses of radiation? As any workers there would have to wear them and then you have air filtration that has to be taken into account.Maybe well get lucky and japans robotics experts can chip in.in the end though if they can't physically remove the damaged reactor they will just have to encapsulate it and hope for the best. Hopefully we are a little more resourceful in our decision than russia's "bury and forget it" policy. As for Korea and china, yeah they are in a $h!t load of trouble.
|
I forgot about that.
Ya know I forgot all about their robot technology there in Japan. Honda has the most technologically advanced robot in the world. They should be jumping in here and using robots to take care of this work in contaminated areas. Good thinking man.
The problem with burrying it now is that it is already leaching into the soil and seawater, so there is going to be a lot more than just dumping dirt over the reactor and leaving it. Otherwise there would be contamination going on under ground that could affect several areas around it. The reactor has to be sealed 306 degrees like a sphere in lead or cement in order to contain the radiation. I think the idea of using robots is a good one, and using remote control heavy equipment to move it around in order to get it into some kind of container would work if they can pull it off. That would be a great move on their part. See if we can come up with stuff like this on an R/C site in just a few minutes, then why in the hell can't all of these nuclear genious's come up with a resolution after what, five or six days? |
They are already using robots to find and recover earthquake victims, they'll probably come up with something.
