My RC8T CE brushless build (tekno V4)
Just wanted to share some pics
RC8T FT champion edition Tekno V4 brushless conversion chassie kit Castle 1520 1600kv MMM esc Hitech 7955tg servo GPM alu rear hubs It`s built exactly after the factory specs like the winner car`s setup for now, only with some thicker diff oils.. It will be used as a basher only for now, as i dont have tracks anywhere close... Almost done.. Tires are glued and drying up now, and exept some minor wheel stand adjustments, the body painting is the only thing left to do.. Waiting for my new 5s batteries to arrive though.. Should be here soon. I love the quality of the AE kit.. :) http://www.br-motor.no/bilde/diverse...t/DSC00389.JPG http://www.br-motor.no/bilde/diverse...t/DSC00390.JPG http://www.br-motor.no/bilde/diverse...t/DSC00391.JPG http://www.br-motor.no/bilde/diverse...t/DSC00392.JPG http://www.br-motor.no/bilde/diverse...t/DSC00393.JPG http://www.br-motor.no/bilde/diverse...t/DSC00394.JPG http://www.br-motor.no/bilde/diverse...t/DSC00397.JPG http://www.br-motor.no/bilde/diverse...t/DSC00398.JPG |
Sorry for the semi-crappy photo quality.. It`s taken with my cell phone..
|
Well, the battery`s showed up today, so i got busy ;)
It`s all done now.. Sort of ok happy on the paint, absolutely happy with the install, and VERY happy about the car`s handling.. http://www.br-motor.no/bilde/diverse...t/DSC00399.JPG http://www.br-motor.no/bilde/diverse...t/DSC00400.JPG http://www.br-motor.no/bilde/diverse...t/DSC00401.JPG http://www.br-motor.no/bilde/diverse...t/DSC00402.JPG http://www.br-motor.no/bilde/diverse...t/DSC00403.JPG http://www.br-motor.no/bilde/diverse...t/DSC00404.JPG |
Nice...interesting how the new kit puts the center diff so far towards the rear.
|
Yeah, i dont know why they do that, but i THINK i`ve read that it`s to get other parts closer to the center of the chassie..
Theres one thing i dont like about it though.. The diff sits kinda high, so the angle on the rear center axle is bad. Maybe it works great for all i know, but i smell wear when i see things like this.. I changed my spur to a plastic 50t esterday when i went up to 120k wt in the center, but i still couldnt remove the base plate under the diff (its a 3mm plate between diff and chassie, so the spur shouldnt stick underneeth the truck) I think i will change to a 46t steel spur from the rc8te soon, so i can remove that plate.. The angle looked alot better without it! Geared up to 48mph yesterday, and MAN did the 1520 wake up! Together with the 120k wt oil, the truck got real fun to drive.. |
truggys is often based uppon the buggy couterpart so the gear ratio is the same, thats why the center diff use shims to make room for an bigger spur. in theory if you use some lubrication you should not see any extra wear
48mph is almost 80kmt thats pretty fast for an basher, im geared way lower than that on the exact same motor so watch your motor\esc temps, especially if you plan using 46t Like your build it lokks real tidy |
Very nice Ola! I like truggys, I like the look. How much does it weight? No dead diffs yet? ;).
That thing must be hauling A** @ 48mph! How does it behave in the air? Easy to backflip? Those tires are "belted" right? so they donīt balloon so much? Like those I had on the revo and now up front on the flux. When you are out bashing, do you have a ramp at home or do you have a sand/gravel-pit to drive in? :). Feed us with some Action shots! |
Alot of people claim these diffs to be VERY strong, and it seems to be true.. :)
It is exellent to control in air, but backflips aint easy with these tires.. With MT tires it should be easy though! They dont baloon much since i`ve taped them, but i dont think they are belted. No ramps here.. I usually bash in some huge bravel pits.. But i run alot of the time all alone, so no one to film/take pics.. I`ve tried to bring my 6y old daughter to film, but she cant keep up LOL |
Here's, for comparison purposes, Mike's conversion chassis. I can definetly see what you are talking about with angle of the rear axle. In comparison Mike's uses standard RC8T axles, no custom ones unlike it appears the Tekno conversion.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_d...0/IMG_5222.JPG Btw, I would definetly suggest, as you are, the plastic chassis braces. I went through several of the aluminum rod braces, bent them up pretty good, and one set of the more expensive aluminum braces. I've switched to using the plastic braces as they give some more support but also flex a bit and are cheaper to replace. |

And the RCM kit wasnt available anyway, so it wasnt even an option when i ordered.. The braces are Tekno`s, made only for V4 kit`s :) But i`ve read other places, that youre absolutely correct on the plastic braces vs alu..! |
I've been running the following on mine:
5S with Badlands (1800kV) spur: 50t pinion: 16t 6S with Badlands (1800kV) spur: 50t pinion: 15t 6S with Baja Trenchers (1800kV) spur: 50t pinion: 13t |

Not been over 130f/55c yet, even with outerwear cover on.. I think i`m in love with the cc1520.. |
Looks really good! Thanks for posting :D
|
Yeah I have a 1520 too... thinking about swapping the 1518 to the 1520 myself, especially since I'm doing 6S these days.
I was going to ask, but temps, etc. seem good with the outerwear? Is that an RC8T specific one? Quote:
|
I`m very happy on the temps.. I run hard, and still keep 130f on both motor/esc.. my 30C 5000mah turnigy`s was showing 85f after 22min`s today, on it`s second cycle...
Dont forget, with cover on.. Alot less cooling wind.. And these temps was with badlands, not the stock (lighter) tires.. The outerwear is made for the E-revo.. i got 2 covers, one original outerwear, and one cheap version i found on ebay for 11 bucks or so.. The ebay one is slightly longer, and fits the RC8T better so thats what i use now.. Both types are fit with velcro, outside the mud guards. It doesnt seal up the rear as good as on the E-revo though.. But i put some velcro on the chassie under the rear center axle, to stick the cover onto.. Works great.. I do get alittle sand into the chassie, but nothing compared to without the cover. I also have 1 layer of outerwear on top of the MMM fan, to keep it clean. (a cut out from an old cover) The V4 isnt as wide as the stock chassie though.. But i think the cover fits anyway.. |
I feel i should update my temps some, as i`m learning to know the setup better..
We have had a wonderfull hot day today, at 23`C / 74f.. (thats almost summer-hot over here ) I was at the gravel pit, running the truggy with the cover on at first.. After a full pack (23min), my motor was alittle hot. Motos was 72`C / 161F at the end of the bellcrank, 55C/130F on the side. ESC was at 55/130F, fan went on and off, nothing unusual. Pulled of the cover, and ran a new pack in the same type of driving.. Everything cooled down in 1-2min, and the motor ran steady at 55` C / 130F, ESC was only 43`C / 109F :) Batteries where 34dg / 90F with the cover on, and barely above ambient without the cover. I was jumping / wall climbing / throttling hard all the time, no gentle cooling runs etc :) Still geared at 48mph, on the CC1520 @5s Ohh btw, 10 packs without ANY wrenching so far.. I think i should buy the truck a cake, or a beer..! Both the E-revo i got and the Flux i had before, wouldnt last that long at this kinda driving.. |
Definetely buy it a beer!

Man that motor is a beast! Everything sounds good to me:yes: Iīm glad you having a good time with the truck:intello:.
When you gear for 3.7V/cell does it really calculate your speed right? And If I remember right you arenīt putting anything in the "tireballooning" box? I canīt imagine the lipos drop down to 3.7 under the first 2/4 of the run, it feels more like 3.9-4.0V/cell, maybe itīs just me having this feeling:lol: It would be great if someone with an eagleetree could check it out, on the other hand...Brian Is a smart guy, he probably did his homework when he made the speed calculator.. Itīs just that it feels like the lipos have becoming better in the last years:whistle:. Any way, have you killed it yet? And one last thing, did you buy your 1520 on the castle sale? I canīt find any now that shipps to Sweden, just US... Not even a 1518.....:diablo: |
i just followed everyones tip about 3.7v calc`s.. 3.8-3.9 would probalby be more correct for all i know :P And i dont calc balooning at all..
Havent killed it yet.. Not one single thing actually :) But only 12 packs on it though.. I think alot of the reason for this, is that i have ALOT better controll driving it. It goes where i want, and fly`s very straight/controllable. Now i`m offshore at work, so there`s no driving now.. I was lucky on the 1520.. bought it from a guy in norway, that had stocked up on that sale  the 1717 in the e-revo was bought on that sale though.. |
Yeah and it seems to work pretty good based on your temps! I wonder how fast your truck really are fully charged with ballooning tires..:intello:
Sounds good! Keep pushing it when you get time, I like truggys, and I like the look of the wing, but it feels like that is the one thing that will hurt the rest of the platform.. Thatīs whats holding me back from building a truggy.. Oh! So you are a boatsman are you! Has This Norweigan guy some 1520īs left? I really Really want one.. Canīt believe Castle stopped producing them... When Castle had their sale I was like: " Oh all these people who buys castles big motors just because they are cheep...Lucky me, I will never need one..." Really has to eat that one up now.. |

Not a boatsman really.. I work as an ROV pilot, mostly on oilrigs and on some boats :) Sort of a R/C submarine with manipulators (hands) hehe.. The guy has a 1520 and a 1518 left, but he doesnt want to sell them :( If he does, i`m buying both in a flash  |
thzero;405424]A speed gun or a GPS device will tell you that.
Yes I know. Does Mr Ola have a speed gun or gps? Huh? What? Out of everything about a truggy you are concerened that the WING will hurt the platform? You don't have to run with a wing, you can take it off if you want. And run it with no protection in the rear for the body?:whip: Must be Friday where you are already.... :) Castle is still producing them (http://www.castlecreations.com/produ...le_motors.html), there was just a sale on a bunch of stuff Castle had stockpiled when they moved their operations to a bigger facility. Some of the stuff was mismarked. It must be last april where you are:intello:, look at the page:lol: it shows "no longer available" on every motor except the 1515 and 1512... And there is only "buy now" buttons available for the 1515 and the 1512:neutral: But thanks anyway. Ola: Iīm not worried about cartwheels:oops: Iīm worried about under rotated frontflips and overrotated backflips:whistle: Your job sounds awsome, how many years were you in school to become a ROV pilot? Driving "RC" stuff at work, what a dream!:surprised: Oh crap! I really really want one... Is the Revo still alive or is it on the bench now when the truggy is taking everything like a champ? |
If flips is youre thing, i dont think a truggy is the way to go, unless you put on huge MT wheels.. But man it flyes nice..
The E-revo is on the shelf.. Actually, i`m considering it for sale now ;) I`m thinking about another truggy, a D8T as a second car.. I just like the feeling of being twice as good to drive than i was with the E-revo  Guess i`m not the MT type anymore hehe.. ROV pilot isnt a education of itself.. There are mostly electricians/technicians/aircraft mechanics etc in the company :) It`s fun, pay is good, and we work 132 days a year, and the rest off.. Sorry, no GPS or speedgun |

doh... I swear it wasn't marked that yesterday, either that or a) I read what I wanted to read or b) I was back in April of last year!
Glad I got both a 1520 and 1518 then. |

Same thoughts here.. I was to late to notice the sale :( I only got the 1717 from them. |
know, i noticed the moving sale thread here so i got lucky.
|
Ola, Iīm just wondering, how did you do when you decided to pick just this specific truggy? There is so many good ones out there, Iīm just curious:oops:.
I have been surfing around a bit and they all seem pretty good, So I canīt make the choice:neutral:. |
I searched for alot of info, and found the D8T and RC8T CE to be some of the toughest of them all, if you dont buy the older MBX5T, or CRT (those must be bought used, and i wanted a new car..)
The mugen MBX6T are known to be very good, but i dont believe they have as strong diffs as the RC8T/D8T. Maybe i`m wrong, but i`ve read ALOT about it so thats what i found out atleast. The mugens are supposed to have minor problems on breaking A arms also, when bashed hard (comes from a guy that has had both, i just gotta take his word on it) The RC8T (must be a CE edition with the upgraded shoks ) was chosen over the D8T, because it`s easier to get part on ebay for it from chop shops ;) And i know you like that too  That, and i havent spoke to many people that actually BASH theire D8T. You know what i mean, not all bashers bash like we do :) And before race guys start ranting me, i know they are all VERY good on the track, and the mugens/d8t might even be a tad better for some of you, but i did not choose my truggy for racing. I`m a basher that MIGHT test it on the track some day  PS: i`m thinking about selling my e-revo now, and buy a D8T as a second car ;) Gotta have 2 cars right? hehe.. |
At least. :)

Just a quick vid of a jump i like to do alot, so you dont think i just pussy around on flat ground ;)
This is around 13m, but i`ve done longer ones there.. Problem is i hit flat landing if i go much further.. This is a jump i do almost every day, MANY times a day.. Not broken down once ;) 3 packs here, just today.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6n77IGI_hw |
And a not so good jump ;) But i saved it, and the throttle was used hard
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azAnG88UDWU BTW for gearing, now i had 69km/h gearing calculated with 3.7V, 0 ballooning, and measured 76km/h on a GPS.. At 3.9v 0.1 ballooning, this would be spot on :) (and fairly correct with taped truggy tires i guess) |
Good info there...

Hey tell me thzero, the anti squat you changed to "4", what bushing did you use? I reckon you ment 4 degrees, and if i read the manual correct, the 1 dot bushing is 3dg, so does that mean you used a 2 dot upwards?
|
Yeah thats what I did.

AHh, a fellow norwegian, nice truggy you have there. All the good stuff is on it, V4, MMM, 1520...and more.

The truggy even got better now, as i just put in a order for 4 new 5s 5000mah 45-90C Nanotechs.. The nanos was out of stock when i built the truggy, so i went for 30c`s.. The 30c`s has worked out great, but i like nanos better as they can handle harder charging and deliver more amps, to be absolutely sure it`s enough.. |
I just manged to burn my new 6s 40C 4000mah for my truggy, and the MMPro, because of a stupid mistake on my part.
I think I am going to buy a turnigy trackstar 150a esc, with programming card. And a turnigy 5s 40C 5000mah. From hobbycity thats cheap for the performance you get IMO. TG |
So true.. If you are interested in cheap 30c`s, i`m selling my 5000mah 5s :)
