Way Fast and a little hot!

I just gave my first BL set up a run out of the livingroom and into the dirt.....HOLY COW! I have never controlled acelleration like that! It was about 1/4 - 1/3 throttle and when I hit it - it flipped!

The controller and motor is getting hot - I measured 120F on both, but that was after a little cool down. Here is the set up:

12020/8 XL, 20T pinion, 51T strobe slipper, 12 cell IB 3800 (which are awesome!), UBEC, stock receiver/tires/diffs/trans, MIP CVD

Do I need a smaller pinion to keep it cooler?

Wow! What power!

damon 05.10.2006 04:06 AM

I forgot to mention...it is an E-Maxx

Nick 05.10.2006 05:04 AM

Still, seems hot for a 8XL on just 12cells?

Sneeck 05.10.2006 06:48 AM

Yea you need to down gear it to 18 t pinion. It'll run better when cooler.

Fan on the esc won't hurt either.

Get ready to buy some spare driveline part's. They will not last long.

squeeforever 05.10.2006 08:03 AM

Those temps are actually pretty good but i would gear down for longer runtimes.

damon 05.10.2006 08:56 AM

Squee, It was actually hotter than 120, it took a minute to get the themometer out.

Will 18 do it? I was thinking 14-16 for the pinion.

As far as driveline, what should be the next purchase? I know diffs are on the list - any good recommendations for diffs? What would be next?

Big Daddy 05.10.2006 11:24 AM

When I had an emaxx I loved the UE diffs, they were some beefy diffs that could take a beating.

Not to thread jack, but on my hellfire I'm running a 16t pinion and the stock gearing on the truck. The motor gets pretty warm so should I go down to like a 14tooth pinion. It's a 10l motor and a 9918 controller on 14 cells.

damon 05.10.2006 05:03 PM

What brand is UE? I have looked on Mike's web site and have not seen that brand.

cabking 05.10.2006 05:35 PM

Most of it is out of stock by the Look.................put a search in for Supermaxx

coolhandcountry 05.10.2006 05:58 PM

Does this mean you got the cog out of it? I would fall back a few teeth and run it.

Mike.L 05.10.2006 06:56 PM

gear down

fishmasterdan 05.10.2006 07:14 PM

I have been running my Emax with MIP CVDs and stock diffs and havent had any problems yet. I however will NEVER buy MIP CVD again. That dumb pin they use is a pain in the butt. I ended up welding the pin holes closed so they wouldnt fall out.
I have the 8xl also on 4s lipos. Not sure about the gearing I run a RRP slipper 66t with 16t pinion and it seems like the right combo.

I would assume 66/16 is 4.125

so a 51t/20 is 2.55

try 51t/13 is 3.923
or 51/12 is 4.25.

Not sure if I got any of this correct but it seems correct to me.

coolhandcountry 05.10.2006 07:57 PM

The mip cvd for the center is a pain. Me and my brother wraped a clamp around it. That works wonders

Big Daddy 05.11.2006 12:09 AM

Does mike sell 5mm pinions?

Dafni 05.11.2006 03:13 AM

Does a one-legged duck swim in cyrcles? ;) J/k

Mike's the pinion man, he fabricates, runs, sells and lord-knows-what them.
5mm is the most common here, too.

damon 05.11.2006 07:33 AM

CHC, it still cogs. The problem was I was ruinning it in the house as I was setting it up. Outside, it has the initial cog and then flys! HOLY COW it flies!

I am going to put a 16T on it.

One last question...
When you are charging IB3800, should they be warm after a complete charge? I have 6c SxS packs with all deans parts. The charger is a MRC superbrain 977 charger. The cheap batteries are warm after a charge, the IB's were not.

coolhandcountry 05.11.2006 08:26 AM

The batteries should be warm but not hot. If they don't warm up nicely they are not charging all the way if they get to hot they over charging.

damon 05.11.2006 09:30 AM

Thanks CHC! I really appreciate all of your advice. My truck wouldn't be running without your input.

Big Daddy 05.11.2006 11:04 AM

lol ok i will have to get some
