Baja BL - Check it out!

Now guys, I'm new to the big side of RC, so dont hate on my lack of knowledge of baja parts and hop ups... I'm not 100% sure about whats on here/has been done to it by the previous owner so it will be a bit of a game... spot what i've missed!

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...4022012415.jpg
as it arrived, looks spotless and hardly run!

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...4022012414.jpg
Body off and we begin to see whats hiding underneath...

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...4022012409.jpg
"oooh is that one of those fire boxes noobs kill on youtube?" yes my friends... yes it is... but this one wont be going to the big esc graveyard in the sky... I'm fairly confident i know what i'm doing and we wont be seeing smoke and flames from this ;) (watch this space!)

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...4022012410.jpg
Got the cage off for a closer look (not an easy task for a non baja user! took me a while to find the little clip on the back of the roof plate! )

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...4022012411.jpg
Front end shot, Anyone have some lower RPM arms kicking around? the previous owner has returned them to RPM as they broke on another baja he has... so i have none :(

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...4022012413.jpg
Quick shot of the underneath, nice braces bro... and a sweet looking chassis :D

now for the parts list (things i know about anyway)

Full Castle Creations Conversion
Roll-cage Mod
Extended Axles front & Rear
IRC Chassis Brace
IRC Xhock Braces
Mini MX Rear Tyres
Windows
RPM Bumper
RPM Arms
Silverback Beadlocks
5755 Steering Servo
9mm Dogbones with replacable pins
Killer RC Shock Limiting Cables
Killer RC Rear Top Turnbuckles and spacers
Darksoul red seals in 6mm shocks

and thats all i can see/know off...

so what do you guys think?

Currently running a pair of these: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dproduct=16225 for 6s tameness :(

but after my bonus next month i plan on buying a pair of these: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...4S1P_30C_.html for 6s, 7s and 8s insanity... and at least an hours run time total :)

Thanks for looking guys, please post up any parts i obviously missed and stick up some opinions / suggestions :)

Jony Nitro 02.25.2012 12:28 PM

Ah very nice:mdr:

padrino 02.25.2012 12:29 PM

Looking good!

Bazzokajoe 03.06.2012 08:45 AM

cheers guys,

been buying bits for it this week :P

RPM Rear Bumper and Skid Plate
Turtle Racing Front Chassis Plate in black
drivecup TOOBZ and Boots
Hostile 56t Spur gear as the one that was on it when it arrived had a large chunk missing.

I'm feeling a Black Silver and Dark Green theme

Something a bit different, and should complement the Castle motor and speed controller colors nicely

also, Castle CapPack arrived and is installed :D

Potted it with silicone, that'll be ok right?

Got the resistors i require for a "no spark" connection coming in the next few days so i'll be all ready when my 8s arrive :D

snellemin 03.06.2012 11:34 AM

Looking good man. Post a vid of it running once you got everything together.

Bazzokajoe 04.01.2012 07:07 PM

last one didnt come out as well as i hoped :P planned to have the little truck jumping over but it didnt have enough power :(

I do have some video, just waiting for my friends at WLB to get it edited and uploaded :)

8s = INSANE

18t on 8s is a big no no... 14t was fine, could probably do with a 16t to find the sweet spot :)

Broke a rear rpm upper arm after attempting to clear both the doubles you see in the background of the first picture in one go :P so near and yet so far...

had some requests on other forums to know the weight so here goes:

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...04-14-0451.jpg

Thats fully loaded (equivalent of having a full tank of petrol)

What does a "normal" hopped up baja weigh?

That looks like some serious fun ! A bmx track would be so nice especially for large scale. Looks like you might kill one of your buddies sooner or later, but hey there is always a price to pay

K1RC 04.15.2012 08:00 AM

I love driving at my local bmx track its just the bmxer's get annoyed if I mess the track up which I guess if fair enough...

Bazzokajoe 04.15.2012 11:37 AM

BMX tracks are great in the dry, i wouldnt run there in the wet as it would ruin the surface for everyone :P

Pictures from today:
http://i1153.photobucket.com/albums/...a/IMG_1817.jpg

First jump broke BOTH front arms, 6 cable ties and i was bashing till the end of the day ;)

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...-04-14-047.jpg

Also broke the steering wiper set... the servo saver did nothing :P i guess its set too tight... any looser and the steering doesn't move, is their a stiffer spring available?

"no-spark" connection and capacitor bank:
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...-04-12-039.jpg

and some posing shots ;)

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...-04-14-048.jpg

Bashing buddies ;)
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...-04-14-049.jpg

A little look inside:
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...-04-14-051.jpg

There is video from today and the bmx track... but its on the cutting room floor at the moment, so be patient ;)

brainanator 04.15.2012 04:10 PM

looks like a lot of fun!

Bazzokajoe 04.15.2012 05:48 PM

its buckets of fun mate :)

Still... after bashing with my mates, wishing i still had a 1/8 buggy to do the big stuff with... this seems a little... heavier than the small stuff i'm used to ;)

The baja really is a money pit ;)

I'm in the process of swapping out all the orange for black and grey... got all the hinge pin braces and shocks, just need the beadlocks, nuts and wing pins... then i can begin my Black Grey and Green Castle theme paint/sticker job ;)

on a side note, anyone know what font castle use for their "CASTLE" writing? I want to get some stickers vinyl cut for it and i want as close to the font as possible

magman 04.16.2012 04:06 PM

Great action shots.

snellemin 04.16.2012 04:20 PM

Love the pics mang. I'm digging those flip up windows.

Bazzokajoe 04.17.2012 04:33 PM

listen to how smooth it is ;)

nitrostarter 04.17.2012 04:56 PM

Very nice! Looks like a fun day and a fun place to drive!!

But let's keep the nitro noise to a minimum next video!!

Bazzokajoe 04.18.2012 07:53 AM

sorry sir, i'll remember that for next time ;)

Making a ramp for this bad boy early next month :) then it will get some real airtime :)

Bazzokajoe 05.09.2012 04:05 PM

I've neglected this thread a little... so here a big update ;)

Batteries last around 30 minutes to an hour... depending on how i drive it :P i usually do 10 minute stints... as i spend more time chatting and tinkering with other peoples cars than bashing :P

Out with the old and in with the new..

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage082.jpg

Clone shocks replaced with Baja SC shocks, running 40wt in the front, 15wt in the rear... Medium springs on the front, softs on the rear. I'm gonna try these out, see how it sits... the mediums might be going back on :P may even buy a full set of hards to try as well!

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage083.jpg

Orange Silverback beadlocks are off, Gunmetal Beadlocks with Monkey nuts ready to go on :)

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage084.jpg

Old wing gone... New wing with TGN Pins ready to go on :)

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage086.jpg

Bye Bye to the Rear RPM's, dont trust them after breaking on at the bmx track... Ramtech arms now installed and they look sweet :D

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage095.jpg

New servo saver setup, Darksoul Saver and Threshold spring support

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage110.jpg
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage139.jpg
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage134.jpg

Front end Photos, Showing the new innovative bits along with the new shocks, TR shock brace, RPM arms, Innovative Hinge Pins, Marks Beefy turnbuckles, Axle Extenders, Limiting Straps, shock socks, Monkey nuts, RPM front bumper, Innovative underchassis brace, TR upper front chassis plate, Scorpion Shorty Chassis

Bazzokajoe 05.09.2012 04:06 PM

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage142.jpg

Servo saver installed (excuse the messy wiring, i need to get a new receiver box as my last one was butchered by the previous owner... )

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage113.jpg
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage138.jpg
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage136.jpg
http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage144.jpg

Rear end photos, showing Tripple A Racing High down force wing, RPM arms, Ramtech-RC Upper arms, Marks Beefy 9mm Dogbones, Hostile Axle Boots, Darksoul axle Tubes (hidden ;)) axle extenders, oh and i had to modify the gear cover to fit the pinion... it seems it is too wide for the stock cover... as it rubs, and i cant turn the pinion over as it goes too far into the mount... not that this should be a problem... some dust may get in but the gap is too small for stones to fit :)

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage154.jpg

My rear window, extends right down to the bottom of the roll cage, full protection from the elements for the esc :)

And finally, some overview pictures:

Bazzokajoe 05.09.2012 04:07 PM

New Rear wheels and beadlocks, same ole Mini MX tires on the back

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage159.jpg

Just waiting on my front Hostile Mini MX tires.. then it will be done... for now!
oh and two final pictures for those interested in "No Spark" connections,

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage149.jpg

Esc side, a male 4mm bullet connected to the 22watt 1 ohm resistor, then connected to the male 8mm bullet via some 20awg wire.

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...raImage155.jpg

Battery side, each battery has a female 4mm bullet, connected via 20awg wire to the female 8mm bullet

Future plans:

New Decal set, Going for a Castle Creations theme... I am a fanboy after all ;)

Slipper Clutch setup will be ordered when i have the spare funds,

Front break disks will also be ordered when i have the funds, along with uber front extenders

I'm looking to get a new rear chassis plate and a Rhino undertray in the very near future... but I'm not sure what chassis plate to go for... Innovative or Modified RC?

Team chase towers will be purchased at some point,

Hostile Heavy duty rear hubs will be ordered when the stocks give up the ghost...

other than that... repair and upgrade what breaks from now on :D

_paralyzed_ 05.09.2012 04:44 PM

It looks awesome, I'm glad you got rid of the orange.

I would suggest not getting the slipper. The power of the brushless motor will just eat it up. If you need smoother starts mess with the esc software, punch control and current limiting.

My e5b thread- http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...ght=e5b+thread

Bazzokajoe 05.09.2012 04:58 PM

ahh right,

Issue is... its not strictly a slipper... it doesnt slip under acceleration... its designed more to absorb the shock of landing jumps... surely this is a very very good thing when running direct drive (no clutch)

Your thread looks good :) got any video of it?

K1RC 05.15.2012 01:21 PM

Looks sweet :D
