Bondo's 1:1 ZJ Scaler

Heres pics of what I'm starting with, also showing how I'm going to join the pieces by sleeving the ends in each other. Each rail will also be plated on both sides with .32" brass strips once they are complete.

Finished one of the rails today, plated with 3/32" and the bottom was plated also with 3/32x1/2" for skid protection and a little more weight down low.

One side done, need to get more 1/2x3/32" strips to finish second rail then
once I figure out exactly where the center skid is going and install the shock mounts I'll do the finishing soldering and when tima allows do the final mock up hopefully soon thereafter off to powder coating !

I'm open to comments and questions

Thanks Brian, maybe starting a trend who knows ?

On the Crawler forum the guys were coming up with brass related nicknames for me, I personally liked "BrassHole" the best. Might be the trucks name ?

I still have to figure out where the trans shifter servo is going and install the rear steering servo mount. Also have to figure what I'm doing for a radio box and battery tray and where the hell their going ??
I think the battery will ride shotgun next to the trans parallel with the frame.

Plenty to do yet, once the mock up is complete I will dissasemble everything and deanodize the colored aliuminum piecse and then decide weither I get it powder coated or try the brass aging/tarnishing chemical I bought ?

Well I have completed the final assembly minus bumpers and body mounts and the body, test drove it around the house and I'm very pleased with it. Obvisously a trail run would be the true test but since this has turned out so well I've decided to step things up and ditch the Axial axles and install the RC4WD Blackwell axles I've ben saving. The minus to this is since I'm financially tapped I have to make my own shock and link mounts for the axles and also have to completely redo the whole 4 link set up. Not to big a deal just more time befor I can get it on the trails.

Onto the pics;

Thanks Brian, very kind of you my friend.

I was able to finish installing the new front axle today and will try to get the rear axle in tomorrow and update the thread with new pictures showing what I've done. I only wish I went with my instincts and used them in the first place. I think I'll get another Axial axle and build another 6x6 but a smaller scale one than the one I recently finished.

Bondonutz 10.06.2012 08:31 PM

I was able to get a bit more done today but not the progress I hoped for, the front blackwell is installed but need to adjust the top links yet and install the drag link. The rear blackwell; I did finish 1 shock and one lower link mount and need to make a duplicate of each. I also made a top link mount useing exsisting mount holes in the case.
This thing is gonna be pretty hefty so i was inclined to go to a bigger shock set, TRX alum BigBores, mainly due to the vast spring rate selection availible.

Ever since Linc packed up his monkey and went home I just haven't been getting the same results I was used to.

I'm thinking of going in to politics so I can screw whole nations all at once.

Very cool! can't wait to see it painted and lit up!

What mini-torch is that? I've been wanting one, and I bought 2 cheapies from harbor freight and they were both 3' flame throwers from the start... You seem to use one a lot so I bet you know which ones are worth while.

Bondonutz 11.23.2012 12:14 AM

This what I have and it's honestly 20yrs old, the newest model is built exactly the same. These torches are all stainless steel construction and US made, the company recently serviced mine and only charged me $22.00 with return shipping included.

The paint is done, took 2hrs to mask of the window frames and roof rack, what a PITA. The lines are nice and clean, I'm happy with the results. Now to install the included decals and misc scale items and finish up a couple small tasks and it'll be done. I will post pics of it once 100% complete.

2 hrs to mask it off ??? Well worth it.

Trim lines around ALL THOSE WINDOWS make it pop !!!

Great looking body.

HEY THANKS GUYS !

Well, Heres "BrassHole" !

I decided on a Aux 2s pack for the LED's, I still have to install them in the roof lights but decided on another day to that.
I even made a scale whip CB antenna, kind hard to see in the pics.
