Build me a center drive Ebike
I build me a center drive ebike with a GNG kit with 12s1p lipo. The kit needed some tweaking and got it to work. Found me a Giant Prodigy frame on ebay and started from there. Well the bike is nice and light, but can't handle the torque the motor/gearing setup produces. The rear of the frame just twist under load. Bummer that after all that work, I will have to take it apart again and set it up with as something different.

thats sexy
is that a kit or custom drive set up? |
Thanks Semi. It's a kit I bought from Hong Kong. Also available through Ebay. I opted to buy directly from their website and paid for the fastest shipping to reduce handling damage going with the slow boat.
|
That looks nice. What kind of speeds will you get with it?
|
He won't get much speed out of it me thinks with the rear end twisting from the torque. That bike is uber nice, it really looks fantastic. But the rear part does look a bit flimsy which is a shame, this bike really looks awesome. Any way of strengthening the rear? I'm guessing that it's all aluminum?
|
Speed wise it felt like 20mph or so. I don't have the Cycle Analyst hooked up yet. I tested the climbing ability in the retention pound and speed in my neighborhood. I broke the chain the second time out and had too buy a new one. Also have a wipperman chain on order.
The bike is nice and took me a bit to find all the pieces to build it up. It's all aluminum and would be nice if Monster Mike could build this drive setup for us to run with big outrunner motors and Castle ESC's. The bike really fits well and is so easy to ride. Everything is so well balance and would hate to mess it up with a rear mounted motor. |
I don't get it. Is it a ratcheting crankshaft with a fixed rear gear cluster?
To me it looks like the pedals would be spun under power:neutral: |
nah, the pedal cranks are also on a freewheel setup. I'm guessing a vid is in order huh.

I had a schwinn road bike years ago (back when me legs worked) that had the freewheel at the crank rather than the gear cluster. Is that a hose clamp holding it to the down tube? |
That hose clamp keeps up a bit of the weight. Most is held by the bottom bracket, which is also supplied by the vendor.
I feel stoopid missing the "ratcheting" remark. You can tell I'm not the brightest Sherlock around. This is what came in the box. controller, crank, bottom bracket, throttle, small chain, and the motor/tranny assembly. http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...X/IMG_1434.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...X/IMG_1433.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...X/IMG_1431.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...X/IMG_1424.jpg |

It was 436 with the fast shipping. Go cheaper with the shipping and you risk damage to your package.

So I stuck GnG drive in a Hard tail Fuji bike. I'm going to use Lyen 6fet mini monster, Left hand throttle, 3 speed switch, with 14s1p lipo.
Replaced some of the metal spacers with Nylon ones. The spring on the idler is tighten up a bit, adding some tension to it. I'll add some threat locker too. Got to see what other screws I can find at the Ace hardware store. Still need to finished wiring it up and adding the CA. Installed a Connex 9 speed chain, hoping I won't snap like the chain on the Prodigy. http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/DSC02543.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/DSC02541.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/DSC02539.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/DSC02538.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/DSC02535.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...1/DSC02533.jpg |
cool update
|
I love the color scheme of that bike:yes:
|
Same color scheme as my gtp.
This is the bike I got from saving the gas money, riding my ebike to work. I used this bike mainly to run in mud, water and rain. Those cheapy 26x2.3 tires are beast in those wet+muddy conditions. Those hydraulic brakes are really nice to have in the mud. They are not the best, but they can lock up the wheels on demand. http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...p/DSC00400.jpg |
Small update on this bike.
It's a motherflower torque monster. Hill climbing is not a challenge anymore. Goes 33mph max with 15s lipo. Trail riding is a blast. Easy to pedal, power when you want, and very easy to handle. I added a 3 speed switch, Cycle analyst and chain guides. I love the 3 speed switch with this bottom bracket motor setup. You really don't need sensors with the setup either. Zero cogging with the 6 fet sensorless controller http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...e/IMG_1487.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...da%201/016.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...da%201/012.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...da%201/011.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...da%201/004.jpg |
Little vid of the 6 fet sensorless controller and GNG.

Looks like fun man.
|
It was hella fun. I forgot to mention that I didn't have any chain drop on the trails with the chain guide and tensioner that I installed. I fell once and the chain was still on. Avg speed between the trees was 12-15mph. I swapped out the seat for a Brooks Flyer saddle. Loved this seat on the trails. I didn't have to get off the seat much, with it being a hard tail bike. It looks like it wouldn't do much on the trails, but it sure did help a lot. Was fun chasing the 29'ers without breaking a sweat.

Small update to the bike.
Swapped from 160mm to 203mm Avid Clean sweep front brake rotor. Brakes smoother from 30mph now. Added a "kill switch" that is just hooked up to the brake wires. Added a medium size Revelate bag that holds 14s2p Lipo now. I like how the bag has a cable inlet in the top front of the bag. http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...vada%201/2.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...vada%201/1.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...vada%201/3.jpg |
i'm sure you thought of this, and it's too late now - but can you lock the rear shock on that Giant? i have a full-suspension Trek, and i can lock both shocks. i just thought that the pull you're noticing is the suspension possibly compressing under load, which then possibly twists the rear end. just an afterthought.
that Fuji setup is bad ass! |
Hmmm, didn't think of locking the rear shock up on the Giant. My intention was to run it on the mtb trails. My wife is riding the Giant now and loves the it, so I can forget about converting back to electric.
The Fuji is a lot of fun on the trails, but I'm waiting on some Schwalbe Crazy bob tires to arrive for some fun onroad riding. |
I'm sure 12-15mph on singletrack seems PLENTY fast.
Very interesting. |
I got some balls today and did a few runs @ 20mph through the woods. Scary stuff mang. Forgot my helmet today, so I wasn't as "wild" today.

Received my new head light. It uses 3 XM-L led's and it's basically a spot light. Good news is, that those Magicshine wide angle lens fits to change the beam. Installed a set of Crazy Bob tires. What a bitch to install those things. Took 140 PSI to seat them properly and than drop them to 55 psi. They ride nice, but I will know later how much better they are compared to the Michelin Pilot sport tires on my high power bike.

A vid of this morning ride, before I got hurt avoiding hitting a papa squirrel.

So I wanted to a do a dual suspension with the bottom bracket drive. I love the hard tail, but I want to go faster over roots and not get of my seat as much. I recycled my older Fuji bike with some other parts I had laying around.
I got new adjustable plates for the bottom bracket setup. It's stronger and they idea was to eliminate the belt and chain tensioner. Well it didn't work out to well. The belt tension is needed. However it does give me the option of using bigger gears. So bought me some adapters from Bike motive to use off the shelf chainrings. Monster Mike could be some money machining these and put them on sale. I still have some things to do on the bike, but it's getting there. http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...C93AE9EFCB.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...C91FC0651E.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...FBA327274A.jpg |
