CF G2 with low CoG

3 Attachment(s)
After six years I decided to start tinkering with my old CF G2 Gorilla Maxx chassis.
I really never liked how the Plettenberg Bigmaxximum sat hi and off center so I decided to go the Center Diff way after much reading on this forum and bugging the hell out of Mike

In the end after having spent hours designing a weak mount, Mike convinced me that his universal mount was the best (easiest and most effective) way to go.

Here is the (almost) final product geared way too high but hey, if ain't broke...break it.

As they say...age makes you sexy ( I think I just made that up for my own benefit).

Here are some more pics of the (almost) final product...

PS. The gearing is WAY too high, I barely hit 8,000 RMP and look at the ballooning.

Gearing Calculation

As I said earlier....way too high... 102 MPH???

Nice to see people are still using that setup! I remember when that idea was the latest and greatest.

Maybe you should instal truggy diffs to get the ratio up? Or just run that motor on 4S??

Good point but at this point I think I'm going to strap a GPS to it and see how fast it really goes until something explodes! Then try again...

I'm looking for smaller wheels/tires for a straight run on asphalt; does anyone have any suggestions?

RC-Monster Mike 11.21.2012 10:30 AM

if you have 17mm hexes, you can use wheels/tires intyended for the Inferno Gt and similar buggy-based road cars.

Nice to see your still kickin' Dafni!

Good idea Mike. Thanks for the tip.

Looking great. Cool truck with a cool setup.

I like the prolines road rage but they are too wide.
Better going with something like this as Mike suggested:
http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...ith-Inner-GT-2

BTW I took the truck for a test run and there was a little cogging but barely perceptible. Went up to 11,000 RPM which was about 23 MPH and felt crazy fast but I loved how the front was lifting without loosing contact with the ground.

Good looking truck. Is that a schulze controller?

Yes it is. 18.97KW with a BEC attached on top. Somhow I have not yet been able to "fry" it...I'll keep trying :diablo:

Dafni 11.22.2012 09:55 AM

With a setup like yours I think the Schulze is doomed.

Stay away from the roadrage tires on a highspeed setup like this. Pizzacutters was the word back then.
I would go the way Mike suggested, 17mm hex and buggy wheels/tires.

Yo, cheers Mike, good to know we're still here.

Since today I was able to take the truck out for a spin (video to be posted after edit) I was also able to un-glue the front tires after a couple of wheelies...

The wheels I have now are all 14mm hex, could I just get a 17mm hex wheel with the appropriate pin or would that not work for some reasons?
I believe the CVD I have are MIP (old original not spline).

Klausen 11.24.2012 01:36 AM

I run Traxxas 17mm hex's with Proline Badland, on the original shiny 2,5 MIP cvd's. I had to mod the Traxxas hex's a bit by drilling from the backside, to make them go far enough into the cvd.

agw 11.24.2012 10:27 AM

Understood, thank you.

At this point I'm thinking of going XO-1 but I'm not sure on which wheels. I really like my aluminum ones but I'm not sure I want un-glue the rest of my tires and reuse them.

Nice looking truck!

I ended up getting HPI 17mm Hex which use the same size pin I already had (2.5 X 12) and a set of Sweep belted tires already mounted on black wheels. Not as nice looking as the aluminum ones but they feel really solid. I doubt the would balloon at all.

Given the smaller radius, the new theoretical speed is now 71 MPH. Let's see how hot the Schulze gets before I hit 50mph

Here is another option if you go with a 17mm hex. Monster truck/ Truggy belted slicks.

That page didn't come up for me.
Can you repost it, I'm curious about the 17mm belted slicks.

Thanks,

Try this one,

^^thanks nastety:yes:

Those monster slicks are perfect for monster speed runs. I sent ipanema an e-mail, just double checking that the Monster Slicks are indeed belted. If they are I am getting a set!

They look cool but at 139mm they are just about the size of the stock emaxx tire which would be way too high for the gearing I'm stuck with.

I may get a pair for my other Gmaxx though. Let's see what they say about being belted or not.

nastety92 11.29.2012 04:31 PM

They are belted. All of the ipanema tires are belted.

If they Monster slics are to big look at the buggy slicks. They also make buggy size belted street tires, not slicks.

Yes, I saw those as well but I have to say, just got back from trying out the Sweep Slick 55 and I had a blast. No ESC overheating, a good degree of drifting until they warmed up a bit, much easier to drive.

Meanwhile I lost a wheel because the nuts are not right and the nylon part does not reach so they come loose easily. I'm waiting for the HPI nuts and hopefully they'll work better otherwise I'll need different CVDs.

I took an on board video which I'm hoping to find the time to edit.

You can spin those nuts and put the nylon part on first. If it's a flanged nut just use a washer for the flange. Also, loctite is your friend:yes:

Not a bad idea at all but it turns out that the flanged nuts I was using were just too big. I switched to the same M5 I had before and put a little washer instead. Now I have no problem...well not that problem anyway...

Must find a large parking lot with no cars...:whip:

first run of tires not belted

hope they fixed them
